Eric Steinbach to the Browns (1 Viewer)

Steinbach to Browns confirmed by Clayton on ESPN7 yrs for 49.5 mill w/17 mill in guarantees
Serious?? ESPN also said Graham was signed by Denver. I'll hold out for true confirmation.
Yep. Clayton also reported that Dockery has signed with Buffalo for a similar deal - 7 yrs for 49 mill with 16 mill in guaranteesHe said the deal was finalized just 25-30 minutes ago. It was a Breaking News segmentHe also said Graham was NOT under contract with Denver
I read the Dockery signing...but this is the first Ive seen about Steinbach

So Browns fans do you think this is to solidify there line(draft Thomas)and work with what they have or to protect future investment (drafting AD)?

This is a really good signing. This is a good upgrade. Drafting Joe Thomas would be a good idea. AD AP even better. Or perhas a QB. This makes the team better.

That sucks. I like the Bengals and I am sad to see him go.
I hate to see a player of his caliber go... but Steinbach for 7,000,000 or Whitworth for 698,000 is a pretty easy call. Whitworth stepped in this year and played well, they'll be fine with him starting at LG. They need to spend that money on the other side of the ball.

Nice signing by the Browns. Games are won and lost in the trenches. With that said, I think they should keep Steinbach at guard and draft Joe Thomas, but I doubt that is the direction they will go. HAving a good O Line makes everyone on the offense better.

I hear what you are saying. But that is why it is imperative to have good depth. Obviously the Bengals would love to keep Steinbach, but there are other pressing needs, and they have a cheap alternative with starting experience. Really not that tough of a decision when you think about it. Andy Reid and Bill Cowher have made moves like that for years. Remember when Eagles fans were up in arms about Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor leaving? Well Reid drafted Lito Sheppard, Sheldon Brown (and future starting safety Michael LEwis) the draft before. Worked out pretty well.

The Bengals also have alot of money tied up into Jones and Anderson on the OL. I'm sure if the Browns had those tackles, they would not have been interested in keeping Steinbach either.Solid signing for the Browns, especially since Seattle lost out on Dielman. They would have probably went higher than 7M for Eric.

Couldn't help but notice that there's not a single condemnation of the Browns for signing one of the "Cincinnati Nine". Remember this is the guy who got a BUI. :tinfoilhat:

I'm not saying the Browns shouldn't have signed him, but just thought it was telling that nobody in this thread brought up the character issue on this one.

I think that his BUI wouldn't have been a big deal if he was the only one. But since he was the 6th out of 9 arrests within a year for a team it was bigger than what it was. He was grouped with Chris Henry and Odell Thurman who did much worse and multiple things, where as Steinbach made one mistake and from what he says learned from it. And who doesn't drink and fish? Is it legal to fish and not drink? And was he really drunk or just high off the toxic fumes of the Ohio River? Have you seen that nasty water? But I will make the first "Wonder if Rueben and Eric will become drinking buddies" joke.

Also, doesn't he have a very clean record besides this one BUI? It's not like he's been a headcase in college/pros. There's alot of worse things than a first offense BUI.He was being interviewed yesterday locally on the radio and seemed like a good guy. Humble, smart, ready to be a leader.....
