ESPN nukes Grantland (1 Viewer)

Never heard of Grantland, but a quick read through in this thread has me partially sad to see something unique go, but puzzled as to why the hell is had pop culture stuff.

I had no idea that reading and liking Grantland made me a nerd. But, when I think about it, that's kinda understandable that I had no idea.

They should have shuttered 538 instead
538 is the best testament to Simmons' ability to hire writers with interesting points of view.
Maybe so. I just found the content to be dull.
I think that was Eeph's point. Grantland hired writers with interesting POVs. The implication is that 538 has not.
Eephus and GPJ agreeing? Dogs and cats.

For those who are lamenting its demise I can almost guarantee they will be spinning something up very similar in the not too distant future.

getting married? I knew this would would happen. Slippery slope.

I'll miss the podcasts most of all. I hope Barnwell and Mays end up together again on a podcast.
I liked the non fantasy NFL talk between these guys. I thought they did a good job of discussing different view points. Sometimes, they'd sway the others thinking, sometimes not. But either way they weren't pissing in each others corn flakes.

And no friggin in your face pimping of FD and DK

The facts seem to suggest otherwise. Every show they have has gone that way (to some extent) in the last few years, and I don't see that trend reversing on a dime.
Seems like a strange move. Hardcore sports fans are an aging and overwhelmingly male demographic. A blend of pop culture with sports could act as a gateway for a younger and more female audience and provide the network with alternative programming options that don't require bidding for broadcast rights.

I personally hate the idea but it's an approach that just about every cable network from MTV to History to CNN has employed to some degree.

Maybe us crotchety old men have made an impact. I'll watch sporting events on ESPN, but like most people here when there's a thread about it, I don't watch any of their other programs. (Except 30 for 30). I used to have sportscenter on repeat all morning and now I'm their target advertising demographic.
