EUREKA! I Found Some Gold! (1 Viewer)

I will stick to my "Run silent, run deep" plan and not say a ####### word to anyone about this.
Oh, those boxes? I was getting tired of looking at them so I just donated them all to Good Will. Why? Was there anything sentimental in them?

Awesome. If need be, this is what I'll go with. The #### will hit the fan, but the entertainment value alone will be in the stratosphere.

I have a few of those morgans. they are cool to have. I'm sure someone has pointed out they have a very wide range of values. I'd think 95% are worth in the 40-60 buck range another 4% are in the 60-200 buck range and then they can be worth just gigantic sums for the top 1%
So lowball on this stash would be roughly 4K. Nice.
They are like baseball cards. If you have whole CY sets of them they are worth more that way. It looks possible what you have there could constitute parts of multiple sets. Obviously you will take the time to catalog them shortly. If for nothing else to see if any of them are a F350 waiting to happen.
A good chunk of the coins have a price on them. I don't know when they were priced. Another good portion of the coins have the date and a code, no price. Looks like my grandpa had made a code for himself so that only he knew the value of the coin. This is all just too weird.
Do the codes match? It could have been a sorting method. Just resort them yourself now anyways. What he paid 20-40 years ago is of no consequence.

I talked with your parents and they want to go on a cruise. I only told them about a couple gold coins. I need a kickback... and a banana.
They already went on 2 cruises when times were good. Their allotment has been used up, sorry.
You misunderstood me. They could go on a cruise into International waters. What happens after that we will leave up to the fishes... er, mammals... whatever.

Or just tell them you traded those old scratched up $10 gold coins for crisp new $10 bills.

BTW, if any of your relatives knew about the coins, they would have been long gone by now. There is no way they would have just left them in the boxes.

I just want to say that this is awesome!

My grandmother used to collect coins for me when I was a kid. When she died, one of the Aunts pilfered a lot of coins. I only saw about half of what was mine and the half I got wasn't the good half.

You my friend have scored huge!!

ETA: When I went away to college I had over 100K, 90s prices, in Star Wars action figures in a huge trunk. Every week I would get 2 action figures one to play with and one to leave in the box. I had them all and a few mistakes as well. When I came back that trunk was filled with 78 records. To this day I don't know who raped me, either my brother or my dad. The moral of the story: Family cannot be trusted!

:lmao: They would take me to court over it. Seriously. Can you tell that I have the utmost respect for my parents?

Holy ####### ####
 Feelin' mighty lucky right now.

Sorry to hear that. Depressing how people can become total #######s to their own family when it comes to matters dealing with money.

If they took you to court they would have to prove how much money was there. Their perceived value would not be in question, I don't think, because actual value is what they could try to recoup, no? So, they would sue you for ~$200? Good luck.

I saw her last year for the first time since my grandmother died, 15 years ago. Her life is a complete disaster and she is still a horrible creature even when she's attempting to be nice. My grandparents had a house on an acre in the San Fernando Valley near a hospital. The house was nothing special but the land was valuable. Instead of taking the time to get the best price, she snapped up the first offer for 240K when the hospital had offered 750k 10 years previous. The guy who bought the property built 8 houses on it during the peak and sold each one for 650k.I hate thinking about it.

She reminds me of that commercial where the kids are jumping up and down for a plastic whistle after $5 or something. Hey, I am going to be getting some gold coins soon, I'll see what I can do for you. Bout time people smile in life, bout time for me to.

You're probably correct. I personally moved those boxes over to my parents' home 8 years ago or so. My grandfather packed them before he died, so it's very possible that they never went through them. They must have thought that it was all old junk.

Have they asked about the boxes? Its contents at all in those 8 years? Do they think they are just collecting dust or what? Say nothing, do nothing, store away the good stuff and if they ever bring up the boxes, well, you've taken care of the good stuff and they can look through the rest.

I bet your grandfather is smiling on you.

Good for you Lev.

Any idea what you're going to do with the stroke of good luck? Buying something fun, or using it to pay off debts and get a quick FF in life?

Been following this thread all along, was wondering when you were going to finally go through the rest of those boxes. WOW! Congrats to you! Your grandfather is looking down at you right now and smiling. Keep us updated, I love coming back and reading this thread.

:goodposting: I'd ask at the next family gathering if anyone wants the stuff. Otherwise you are just going to have to move it out. It just too emotionally straining for you to look at everyday. (Can you pull that off?)

You bet he is. Thanks for the well wishes.

After the other revelations above, at least give us a little on your parents.
I'll start with my uncle because it'll only take a few sentences. His entire adult life, he would run off and do whatever caught his fancy. When he'd run out of money, he'd come back with his hand out and my grandparents would enable him with more dough. When they finally caught onto his game, his reasons for needing money sounded legit, so they'd bite. The final straw was when my grandfather gave him 10K so he could go to semi-truck driving school. Being suspicious, my grandpa called the school only to find out that he was not a registered student. That was the end of that. Totally cut off financially. On to my parents. Like my uncle, they have been totally irresponsible with their finances since I starting thinking about financial matters. My father has been on disability due to a work injury since 1988. He received a decent sized settlement and immediately invested it on dot com stocks. I was in college at the time ( I paid for my own tuition, for what it's worth), and even then I told him not to buy high. He didn't listen. When the bubble burst, he lost his ###. He would up buying two new vehicles and a ####load of expensive hand guns with what was left over.As my grandparents aged, they began to sell their properties. They kept the home they lived in but sold everything else. I would guesstimate that they had around 500K from their real estate deals. So in the late 90s, my grandfather gave my dad power of attorney as he had suffered a stroke and couldn't deal with financial matters any longer. My grandpa refused to have my uncle as the backup (he didn't trust him), so it went to me.After my grandfather died, my parents decided to buy a new house so, "grandma could come live with us." I thought, great! That's awesome. She won't be home alone and there will be somebody there to take care of her at all times. Well, that didn't happen. My parents moved into their new home but my grandma remained at her home. During this time, my parents went on a spending spree. Ordering stuff from QVC was my mom's specialty. They racked up a ton of credit card debt and they blew through a good portion of my grandma's money. Then, my grandma began to lose her wits. Her neighbors found her walking outside at night in the dead of winter and she didn't know where she was. After a few of these incidents, they threatened to turn in my parents for elder abuse. They had two choices. Either put her in a care home or take her into their own home. They informed me that they were going to sell my grandma's house and then she'd move in with them. Next thing I know, she's in a ####### nursing home. I was livid, but there wasn't much I could do about it. This is also the time I moved those boxes over to my parents' basement. So, the money was beginning to run out. The nursing home was very expensive. It was a very nice one. She had her own room, etc., but it was costing 3K a month. That didn't stop them, though. More purchases with credit cards and throw in a cruise to the Panama Canal and a cruise to Alaska began to take its toll. So, the day came when my grandma had to move in with them. By this time, most of the cash was gone, so they had to find a way to make some income. Luckily for them, the state we live in pays you to take care of your elderly relatives. The problem was they were using that money on whatever they wanted instead of applying it towards my grandma. When she died, they lost their last source of income.Whatever money remaining disappeared. They had to file for bankruptcy, one of their vehicles was confiscated for collateral, and this year their home was foreclosed. Total cluster####.So that's when my uncle showed up to collect his share only to find out that it was all gone. What a circus that turned out to be. WW II was more peaceful. So that brings us full circle, more or less. There were more shenanigans they pulled, but I'm seriously rambling now and need to wrap this up. I helped my parents move into their new home a few months ago. That's when they offed my grandpa's stuff on me. They didn't have the room anymore. Crazy, huh?

"That's when they offed my grandpa's stuff on me. They didn't have the room anymore. Crazy, huh?"

This is straight out of an O Henry story.

Not sure yet. I'm debt free except for my mortgage, so I'm good there. Thinking about just holding on to it and passing down to my kids. I may sell a coin here or there, but I'd never get rid of the whole thing. I have an emotional attachment to it.

Thanks for the anecdotes, and congratulations on turning out so well when it seems you had a lack of positive parental role models.

Thanks for asking. You have no idea how cathartic it was for me to type those words.

Good things happen to good people. Cliche` I know, but the older I get the more I see that somehow it's really true.

Congrats.

yeah, you should post the morgans you have asap so we can use the power of the internet to locate any ones that can complete sets for you, etc.

I couldn't pull that off with a straight face. Plus, I'd rather just say nothing at all with regard to the boxes. :stealthmode:

You should sell all of the coins and buy some of those Franklin Mint plates. They're not guaranteed to go up in value but they all have in the past.

Way too much work, man. Plus, someway, somehow, that amount of pics would turn into a Bat Signal. Mario Kart would surely find me.

I'm trying to do some research for you with some local guys here.

So, uh, what's your exact address?

Wow. Crazy story, though I've heard similar weird generational stuff like this. Good for you on the haul. I would say nothing, call it positive karma coming back and do something good with the money.
