Falcons release free agent mistake Hartw... Published Fri Mar 2 2:59:00 p.m. ET 2007

(Rotoworld) Falcons released LB Edgerton Hartwell

He wasn't much of an impact in Atlanta - but what does that do to the linebacker shuffle there?

How does this affecrt Beck and Brooking?

Given Mike Zimmer's preference for quick, sideline-to-sideline type linebackers, this isn't too surprising. It's possible that this opens the door for Jordan Beck to take over in the middle but I think it's more likely that Demorrio Williams moves into the WLB spot safely all season long with Beck remaining depth.

This article suggests that Brooking and Beck will compete for the MLB and Demorrio will take over at WLB.
The new staff is high on Demorrio Williams and will give him a chance to takr the weakside linebacker position away from Keith Brookings. Brookings, a former Pro Bowler, is slated to move back to the middle and will have to hold off Jordan Beck, a second round pick in 2004, in an open competition. The plan in revamping the linebacking corps is to make it more of a sleek, faster and ball hawking unit.

I can't see Beck beating out Brooking.

If Beck shows that he can be the starting MLB, then most likely Brookings moves back to WLB. If Brookings and Beck are to compete for MLB, then it's Beck's chance to start...Brookings start no matter what...just what position. IMO

Falcons open mini-camp Boley/Brooking/Williams as expected.

Keith Brooking opened mini-camp as the Falcons' middle linebacker, replacing Ed Hartwell, who was released after two injury-plagued seasons in Atlanta.

Coach Bobby Petrino said the move is not necessarily permanent, but for now, Brooking, normally a weak-side, outside linebacker, was a better option than third-year middle linebacker Jordan Beck. Brooking has played middle linebacker the majority of the past two seasons because Hartwell had Achilles' tendon surgery and operations on both knees.

Michael Boley and Demorrio Williams lined up as the starting outside linebackers.

"We'll determine as quick as we can after the draft," if Brooking will stay in the middle, Petrino said. "Once we put him there, that is where we want him to stay. That is what we want to do this whole season, so he can play one position and really focus in on that. We feel good about the three guys lining up there right now."

Petrino said the Falcons will add another linebacker, most likely through the draft.

Warpig, sadly, it may be time to dump him.

d. Williams has been a huge fantasy scorer, but not because he is such strong player. Just the opposite; opposing teams focus on running right at him and thus, he gets lots of tackle opportunities.

That said, Atl seems determined to keep Williams in the game and keep Beck on the bench. So Beck won't become a starter until the week after you drop him. LOL.

I'm not a big Dontarrious Thomas fan, so if you think you can do without EJ Henderson's handcuff, I'd rather drop him than Beck. At least this gives you a little time to play out. You know Greenway and Henderson are the MN starters.

If you can dump Thomas or Beck and pick up FA Fowler to protect Tulloch, I'd do it.

I also see Greg Ellis is available. He'll be a decent LB scorer again next year. I also look for Ellis to leave Dal either next year or maybe even this year. If he returns to a 4-3 DE, he'll be a starting DE for you. Which you may need when Bryan Thomas gets classified as LB (trade him now). Also be aware that Kelly might be moving to DE.

Poppinga is also available and even though he plays stongside LB, he's always scored well when he played. Although, your roster spot might be better used for a high-upside prospect.
