Falcons replace Mularkey with Koetter (1 Viewer)

Interesting to see what he does with a much better QB and more receiving weapons.

Chris Mortensen @mortreport 1h The Atlanta Falcons have hired former Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter as their new play-caller
Where does Brian Schottenheimer end up? Waiting for his father to win the TB job?

MJD with a good word for Koetter.

Maurice Jones-Drew @Jones_Drew32 1m RT @drock9350: @Jones_Drew32 Did my falcons hire a good offense cord.???? <---- yeah a very great coach we jus had a lot of injuries

I think we've seen the best this Falcons incarnation is ever going to be.

Serious concerns with Ryan's pocket awareness now combined with the most conservative, unimaginative play caller in the NFL.

Not. a. good. look.

FWIW, a lot of locals think that JDR put the shackles on koetter. Plus, when you have a great RB like MJD and an awful pass game, what's an OC going to do? Koetter had a wide-open attack in college and basically adapted to what he had to work with. The Ryan concerns are valid though.

Yeah, I'm not getting this at all. Shouldn't that job be in pretty high demand- why settle for Koetter?

Not too surprising that MJD would have something nice to say about the coordinator who put the ball in his hands all the time.

Yeah, he was terrible in Jax. With supreme talents like Matt Jones, Reggie Williams, Dennis Northcutt, Mike Sims-Walker, Nate Hughes, Charles Sharon, those offenses should have been dominant.

His players in Jacksonville were pretty bad, Harry Douglas could've competed for their #1 WR spot. Let's see what he can do with some talented players. Remember that Mike Mccarthy had the #32 ranked offense in San Francisco and Sean Payton's playcalling duties were taken away to Jim Fassel on the Giants. Those coaches looked much better once they had some talent.

I get that his players weren't very good (although MJD is one of the best in the NFL), but Atlanta fans can't honestly be happy with this, can they? Is this who you were hoping for? He may end up doing fine, but I'd think he would have been near the bottom of the list.

Must be that Smith wants to emphasize the running game - otherwise they could have hired Haley or someone more QB oriented to work with Ryan

Who else was out there? Brian Billick? No thanks and awkward situation with his brother in law as his boss. Brian Schottenheimer? After what the fans saw what he did with the Jets, no thanks. Tom Clements? Former Offensive Coordinator of the guy we were going to fire (Mularkey) in Buffalo?Koetter isn't a sexy pick but I went back and looked at some of Green Bay's fan reaction to the hiring of Mike Mccarthy and around 90% of the reaction was anger, saying his track record is terrible and his 49ers offense was terrible. Koetter has some solid offensive concepts and loves the vertical game so I will give him a chance before I react.

One sentence tells the story:Koetter became offensive coordinator in Jacksonville in Mike Smith's last year in Jacksonville. Koetter will have better receivers to work with in Atlanta.

These guys love bringing in guys that they worked with before. Doens't matter how bad they suck either. Smith will be looking for a new job soon himself if this offense takes a step backwards. This one is reminiscent of the many times Jimmy Raye continued to get OC gigs.

I don't think they had to rush to sign an OC, maybe someone from one of the playoffs teams becomes available or one of the guys in the hunt for a HC job would be interested. Even if those were the only choices, I'd probably take all 3 over him. Maybe even Musgrave. The McCarthy situation is irrelevant- just because people didn't like it at the time and he turned out to be good has no bearing on Koetter. I'm not saying he's going to be terrible, it would be foolish to close the book before it even opens, but you have to have an initial reaction to this. Are you happy with the hire today? I don't expect most fans to be. I know they wanted Mularky gone, but this doesn't seem to be any better on paper.

My initial reaction was that Falcon fans should be happy that at least it wasn't BSchottenheimer.

It's not what I expected but I will say that I'm happier to have Koetter instead of Mularkey.

Jimmy Raye Jr....not his dad (the off coordinator)

IMO, this is a year  hirings on all of the major coaching fronts(HC,OC,DC). Seems like all of the so-called young sharp minds have been burned through in the last handful of years. At head coach, we are looking at Fisher, Crennel,Mularky, Zimmer (maybe) with Tampa Bay interviewing every AARP dude who can stand-up. The best offense in the league seem to either have a head coach as player caller or one who has his finger prints all over the scheme. Nothing really on defense as the most interesting production has come from veteran DC who have failed as head coaches.

To those who think Koetter is better than Schottenheimer, I have to ask...do you really think it came down to just those guys? There are offensive minds all over the world to choose from. Instead you chose a guy that we know is mind-numbingly uncreative and conservative. Enjoy combining that with a kid who feels pressure where there isn't any.

His offenses at ASU were always pretty fun, creative, and put up lots of numbers. He was his own offensive coordinator while here and made Andrew Walter of all people into the Pac10s all time TD passer (until Leinart stayed for sr year). Good offensive mind, but he was just in over his head as a HC and he was kind of a ##### to the media/alums.
