Flowery Branch — Falcons' tailback T.J. Duckett doesn't have to hear any more trade speculation. Tuesday night, he was dealt to the Washington Redskins as part of a three-team deal that brings speedy, but disgruntled Denver Broncos wide receiver Ashley Lelie to Atlanta, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

The move, which comes roughly three weeks before the regular season, addresses an area that has been of concern for weeks and reached a crescendo after Atlanta's 38-10 preseason loss to Green Bay Saturday.

Yet, in trying to bolster depth, the Falcons parted with their 2002 first-round draft pick in Duckett, leaving rookie Jerious Norwood as the main backup to starting tailback Warrick Dunn. Fullback Justin Griffith could also play tailback in a pinch or in the short-yardage situations, roles Duckett used to handle.

"I feel like I'll be all right," Norwood said Tuesday afternoon, before the trade was consummated. "I've just got to continue to get better. Whatever happens, I'll give 110 percent of everything I have."

In exchange for Duckett, 25, the Redskins sent a third- or fourth-round pick to Denver, who, in turn, shipped Lelie, 26, to the Falcons.

This is the second time in the past few months Denver has facilitated a three-team trade with the Falcons. Atlanta swapped first-round picks with the Broncos then shipped the choice they got from Denver to the New York Jets in exchange for defensive end John Abraham.

Coincidentally, the Falcons considered using their first round pick (18th overall) in 2002 on Lelie before using it to select Duckett. Denver drafted Lelie with the very next pick.

Lelie (6-3, 200) is a speed burner and a downfield threat, who has caught 168 passes for 3,007 yards with 12 touchdowns in his career. His best season came in 2004 when he had 54 catches for 1,084 yards and seven touchdowns. Last season, he caught 42 passes for 770 yards and one touchdown.

Lelie has held out of Denver's entire training camp — costing him $14,000 a practice in fines, which he is obligated to pay — and expressed his desire to be traded ever since the Broncos' acquired wide receiver Jevon Walker, a move that positioned him as the No. 3 wide receiver behind Walker and Rod Smith.

Lelie will be the Falcons' No. 3 wide receiver behind Michael Jenkins and Roddy White. Coach Jim Mora has said it would be made clear that any receiver the team acquired would not leapfrog White and Jenkins and that disruption over the pecking order would not be tolerated.

With Lelie being in the last year of his contract, that not might put him in the most advantageous situation to put up big numbers to increase his appeal. However, he is getting the chance to play, which probably was not going to be the case in Denver because of the acrimony between Lelie and the team.

Having been a starter, Lelie also could be able to move into a starting role should White or Jenkins get hurt.

Atlanta has been trying to find someone to be the No. 3 wide receiver since veteran Brian Finneran tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee early in training camp. Jerome Pathon had been promoted to the third-wideout, but the coaching and personnel staffs felt they had to move in another direction after the loss to Green Bay.

Lelie would be used differently than Finneran in three receiver sets. Finneran was a mid-range target. Lelie would be used more to stretch the defense, while Jenkins would probably operate more in a possession receiver role, Mora said.

"Mike Jenkins would be the logical guy to play the slot because of his size and he's good getting off the jam and he catches the ball well inside," Mora said Monday.

As for Duckett, he could finally get the chance to be a featured back — for a few weeks. Redskins' tailback Clinton Portis is out with a shoulder injury but is not expected to be out for the entire season.

The Redskins, who play host to the Falcons Dec. 3, utilize a more traditional running attack that could work to Duckett's downhill running style. The Falcons' zone blocking, cutback scheme is more suited to slashers like Dunn and Norwood. Even so, Duckett has scored 31 touchdowns over his four years in Atlanta and gained 2,175 yards on 552 carries.

Duckett began to surface in trade speculation after last season, when, after an ankle injury, he struggled down the stretch. He managed a career-low 380 yards (3.1 average) despite getting 121 carries, 17 more than in 2004, when he gained 509 yards and averaged a career best 4.9 yards per carry.

Portis injury worst than expected or what they are willing to say in public? Maybe?

Portis - :shrug:Duckett at the goal line - :shrug:Lelie a starter - not likely... the Falcons have been looking for receiver depth since Finneran went downNorwood moving up -

Market values:

Portis - down

Betts - down

Cooley - down a shade

Redskins O - up a bit

Duckett - a little up

Dunn - same

Norwood - up

Lelie - up

Vick - up (bigger vulture now?)

White & Jenkins - same

How does Dunn stay the same? Isn't this similar to the Gore situation?

I think it's strange you think this move will increase Vick's rushing #'s, but not Dunn's.

I think Dunn goes up slightly but not significantly. Griffith could get goalline TDs. Norwood will probably play some. And Vick will probably get more GL TDs.

I guess Betts isn't as impressive as Saunders was making him sound.

as a 'skins fan, I'm kind of dumbfounded. With this being Duckett and Betts last years, will duckett sign and extension? Will he even want to re-sign seeing as how his role will be the same there as it was in Atl?

IMO, Crumpler's value goes way up with this move, possibly adding 2-3 more td's in the red zone.

The only way this trade makes any sense is if Portis is hurt worse than we've been led to believe.

Won't White's and Jenkins value decrease with a WR like Lelie stealing looks & TDs?

I don't think this trade will make Duckett any happier.
I don't think Duckett was going to get a chance to start this year no matter what, so that's probably not an issue.I also don't think the Redskins believe they'll be able to sign him with Portis as their starter and Duckett openly saying that he wants to be a starter.Which to me means the Redskins REALLY wanted Duckett for this year.I'm starting to believe that Portis' injury might very well be more than they've said so far and Duckett is a 1 year insurance policy in case Portis isn't close to 100% this year.

Not necessarily. Brunell is old and the Skins are making a Superbowl push this year. They've said they want to keep Portis fresh by reducing his wear and tear at the goalline.

I don't like this either. What is Washington's incentive to trade a 3/4th rounder for Duckett?
Plus Duckett is in a contract year, right? Can Washington really expect him to re-sign and take cheap money to backup Portis? they have to assume Duckett will want to hit free agency, and if they do think that, they're giving up a 3rd or 4th to rent Duckett for the season.I'd say not good for Portis owners.

What I'm reading into this is:Redskins - Portis injury is more serious than advertised - want to bring him back slowly... Betts pimping was more show than substance - since they went and pick Duckett very quickly...Broncos - They finally got their "first day" pick for Lelie... must be a 3rd rounder... Shanny will probably package this one with his late 1st rounder next year to move up and pick Calvin Johnson (to replace Rod Smith and lined up with Walker - yikes!)...Falcons - Very pleseantly surprised by the way Norwood is picking it up: blitzes / pass-catching / work ethic... will add Lelie for WR depth... and to think Asley wanted to be a WR1: good luck!

Skins are making a run at IT this year. Portis getting dinged in the first pre-season game had them thinking they were thin at the position if he went out later in the year. Insurance move with more options for the offense. Man, the Skins love to mortgage thier future draft picks.

Yep. It's called insurance. THey expect Portis to be the man but if he isn't, they won't be hurting as much with Duckett on board. Nice move by the Skins. I couldn't care less about how this impacts the fantasy value of Portis. If he's starting he'll be the man. I think Gibbs made the right call here(not sure why there are still people ou there who think that Snyder is calling the shots on that team. Gibbs is the president and CEO. He's also the one who has all the Juice here in DC. Thankfully, Snyder is along for the ride and to sign checks).

OK, that's it, no more fantasy drafts until the last week of the pre-season. My draft just keeps getting blown up. :wall:

Great deal for the Redskins. They pay a small price for running back insurance and goal-line bulk. Gibbs relies on the running game a great deal and Duckett should be a great fit in that offense.

Decent deal for the Broncos. Shanny gets rid of a headache and adds a pick.

Crap deal for the Falcons. They run the ball a lot and now they are pinning their playoff hopes on an aging Warrick Dunn and a rookie to get the job done? For this huge risk they are adding a homerun threat WR who doesn't know the playbook and has a questionable attitude. Doesn't make a great deal of sense to me.

:pickle: Just traded for Dunn when the Duckett rumors were swirling. I assuming his value has gone up, with Duckett no longer there to vulture as many td's.

Before all the Portis owners go jumping out of windows, remember another Washington RB, Kerry Carter, got injured as well. If the Skins think they are legit contenders for the Super Bowl, spending a 2007 draft pick on a veteran back might not be such a bad plan.
