I've been in a particular fantasy football league for about 12 years now. The amount of time I've dedicated to that particular team is absurd. As a result, I've built a pretty awesome team which places in the top 3 year after year. It is a money league ($100 entry). Anyway, here's the story.

The commissioner of this league is an old college friend of mine. We've been good friends for 13 years now. Recently, however, he's decided he simply does not want to be friends with me and has cut off all communication. He'll only answer a question on the fantasy site if it is something the affects the entire league. I've asked him straight up if he intends to kick me out after this year but, as you can guess, it met with icy silence. Right now we are in the fantasy playoffs, one game before the super bowl. So, in light of this, I have two questions for y'all:

1) Has anyone else had this sort of thing happen to them?

2) Do I stay in the league if he doesn't kick me out?

As for the second question, I'm leaning towards resigning from the league. My friend's actions have pissed me off so much that I'm not sure I can take being associated with him in any way.

it's up to you. just a piece of advice: if you enjoy being in the league with the 10 other folks, not the commish, won't hurt to stay because you've got the other folks to talk smack and have fun. but if you really don't enjoy being in the league at all because the commish is ruining it for you, then leave.

What if the commish quit the league and the group decided to outsource the commish role to india to someone you never dealt with except for impersonal league-related questions. Would you still enjoy being in the league? If so, stay in the league and ignore the commish. If not, drop the league. Has this commish always been the commish? yea, if you are friends with enough of the others in the league, then it makes sense to stay ... but if you troubles with the commish cause you too much anguish, then you should probably cal it quitsi agree, though, that we need more information b/c it doesn't make sense that the commish you go all cold on you for no apparent reason --- there is definitely a reason for it, even if you are not currently aware of it

I don't really want to get into the whole backstory. Here it is paraphrased: When he gets upset, his way of dealing with anything is to simply run away from the problem. He has no ability to deal with confrontation. Anyway, when he stops talking to me, I start to get a bit worried that he's all pissed at me again. What it came down to is that one night I sent him a few ims (which he ignored), texted him once (which he ignored) and then called him once (which he ignored). I wanted to get in touch with him just to talk. He took that as an attack, snapped at me and stopped talking entirely. I've reviewed the entire situation in my head. I'm usually pretty good at identifying where I've gone wrong and apologizing for it. I can't see at any time where I was inappropriate.Last year he came over to my family's house for the super bowl. Yeah, I would still enjoy being in the league. He has been the commissioner since the league started. HAHA, I'd love to call for a new commissioner election but he'd kick me out in a heartbeat. Wow. Talk about ruining something that's supposed to be fun. Look, your buddy is quite the headcase. I'd start my own league and have whoever from the current leauge wants to migrate over do so and find replacements for the rest. Fantasy is supposed to be fun. Some people just don't want to be helped. When he sees that even his friends are abandoning him, he'll either change or continue to be a lonely, sad guy. Either way, quit after this year and move on.

If you're critical of him running away from his problems, then you leaving the league for the same reason makes no sense. If you feel his ability to be a good commissioner (his judgment) is being clouded by his dislike for you, then that's a different story. Either way, the guy sounds like he's got some serious issues. He probably needs some good friends who will give him a helpful kick in the butt to help him deal with some issues.

Stay in the league if you would still enjoy it, just ignore your former friend. I also like the idea of starting your own league. Just invite everyone from the current league to join your league. The commish obviously will not join, but hopefully some or all of the others will. And since it's an additional league, it doesnt seem like a #### move to me.

Read the whole thread before responding to an early post. I responded to this question. He didn't suddenly get pissed at me. He has issues with how people contact him and how often. He was already ignoring me (who knows why as he won't say) when I tried to contact him to see what was up. That's when this all started.

Your friend sounds like he has some emotional/mental problems he needs to address. He obviously has not been a friend to you over the past year and he brings you down. I think it's time to step away from your relationship with him.

Yes. He would basically ignore all calls for weeks at a time - in season, when a commissioner should be active. I joined this league in it's 3rd year. I didn't place in the money that year, but I heard stories from other members about having difficulty claiming their winnings that year. I stayed one more year and in the process I paid more attention to the inner workings of the league and how this individual handled things. In the process I developed some great friendships with other members of the league. One guy in particular made a point to discuss a lot of the league issues with me. During the course of the year we had some conversations about starting our own league. At the end of the year when it came time to hand out the cash prizes, the guy couldn't be bothered. My "new" buddy had to go to the guys house and demand he got paid his winnings. (To this day, I think he is the only one who did not get stiffed.) When he returned home from getting his money, he gave me a call.Right then and there we decided to start our own league. We put a nice big rule book into place, that basically insured that no shenanigans would occur in the new league, and invited most of the owners from that league to jump ship and join us. Most did. Eight years later we have a very solid 12-team league with no issues between any of our guys. Sure, we have had our slight differences over the years, but we work through them diplomatically. We have never had an issue with payouts and we have a rule book that is pretty tight. As commissioner of this league, I basically just keep things running smoothly. We have a treasurer who is dependable and honest, so we've never had any issues in that department.Didn't mean to ramble, but I'm quite proud that me and my buddy were able to turn what was essentially a bad situation into one where we all have a great time and we have all become great friends.

First of all, I've read the whole thread, so don't throw that in my face. I don't think you can count on any advice given here if you're unwilling to state the facts of how this happened. Without that info, you're thread is ridiculous. He deserves to be pissed.

I know you don't believe me, but I'm telling the truth. The only thing I did was attempt to contact him to find out why I hadn't heard from him in a while. I wanted to make sure he wasn't upset with me again. He claimed at that time he wasn't upset but continued ignoring me. I asked again a week or so later with the same result. He has completely ignored me since the last time he said he wasn't upset with me. If you knew this guy, you'd understand. He and my wife were friends in college and he did the same thing to her. My wife is one of the most gentle, straightforward people you'll ever meet. She would flat out tell me if I'm in the wrong here. She agrees that he has some serious apologizing to do.Either way, I've apologized to this individual several times for whatever it is I've done with no response. I've more than done my part to resolve whatever happened.

If you went seven months and didn't even notice he had stopped talking to you-- you're not friends. No big loss. You're hanging on to something that doesn't exist.

I have a friend who is a Catholic deacon who essentially made your second point. This deacon mentored this guy in high school. He said he probably gets some sort of satisfaction from all of this.

Anyone else ever have a falling out with the commissioner? Not necessarily like this...but in any other way?

I was kicked out of a league one time because the commissioner didn't want me advertising potential players for trade on the message board. We were both flush with RB's to trade. I did it anyway. He had no right to forbid me to use the message boards for FF related, non-offensive material. He started to trash talking my players in spite or strategically, so I started making cracks about the players he had available for trade. It was all intended to be light heart-ed ribbing. But FF gets competitive. Once he perceived my posts as affecting his ability to make trades he got angry and very serious. I made light of it and blew it off again. Then I was kicked without warning. Since then we are still friends. I did get back into that league before the following season started. But, the league collapsed eventually. There had been to much turmoil that started with some of the other team owners and the commish about me being kicked. We play in 2 other leagues together now and neither of us commish them.Some things just aren't meant to be.If the rest of the league already fells and sees the tension, then just announce that you feel uncomfortable about it and are considering leaving. If it's meant to be, the rest of the league should help sort it. If not, then you're probably better somewhere else anyways.

Read the whole thread before responding to an early post. I responded to this question. He didn't suddenly get pissed at me. He has issues with how people contact him and how often. He was already ignoring me (who knows why as he won't say) when I tried to contact him to see what was up. That's when this all started.

I don't really want to get into the whole backstory. Here it is paraphrased: When he gets upset, his way of dealing with anything is to simply run away from the problem.

Lack of communication may be his response to stress but it does not explain why you think it might be related to you.

I'm usually pretty good at identifying where I've gone wrong and apologizing for it. I can't see at any time where I was inappropriate.

Again maybe this is not about you? Maybe his wife just got back from a camping trip. Not to beat a dead horse here, but I think you should definitely leave the league. One question though- do the other owners have issues with this guy too? If so i would see no problem with you being able to start a new league with some/most of those guys. Maybe that would give him a wake up call to look at what he's doing wrong.
