.... especially ones to make imperfect people feel better about themselves?

I was a pretty horrible person for a good portion of my life, before the new millennium. Never got arrested or anything, and I'd like to think I have a good heart, but I did things I'm ashamed of. I hurt people, and sometimes to this day it's hard to look in the mirror. As Jules said in Pulp Fiction, "I'm tryin', Ringo. I'm tryin' reeeeeal harrrrrrd to be the shepherd."

I know this may not fully compute, because I'm the guy who loves porn, but certain Bible verses give me comfort. I'm not even sure there is a Big Guy up there, but I'd like to think so even though logic suggests otherwise. Anyway, I kinda like these passages:

2 Corinthians 5:17,

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

1 John 1:9,


"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Psalms 103:12,


"As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us."

1 Corinthians 7:13-15 -- And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.

 
I think it's important to note that the more cryptic and cynical verses being posted in this thread are from the Old Testament. Jesus came and clarified a lot of questionable things from the Old Testament.

People were passing their own laws off as God's word.

I'm sure this thread won't end well due to the nature of this board, but I will just chime in to say I identify a lot with the OP.

As a believer who constantly battles with varying levels of doubt, I would say the new testament and specifically the actions and words of Jesus are important to me. I personally believe in the idea that Jesus came to save sinners and view the NT as almost a solution to the "problem" of the OT.

Anyway, I would say the book of John and most of the NT has constant themes of Jesus choosing regular (not the most moral) people. Even the disciples weren't exactly the best pre-Jesus. Story after story from Jesus' life involve him intentionally picking out the people who deserve it the least and treating them the best if they believe in him. I guess to answer the OP, those are my favorite parts of the bible. They make me believe that if the bible is true and God/Jesus exist, then heaven isn't for the people who've made the least mistakes. Lord knows that wouldn't be me.... even today. If the standards are people who know they've messed up plenty and believe Jesus can help them, which is what the gospels suggest, that is good news.

Some people have some serious bitterness issues. Instead of seeing the good and comfort the Bible provides to hundreds of millions of people on a daily basis, you must crap on everything religious. It is really ignorant and in no way enlightening, intelligent or humorous. It just displays your complete lack of empathy and respect for what people go through and how they cope. We know you don't believe, but must you be complete ash hats every time the topic comes up? Give it a rest. It is a worse shtick than LHucks.

I like this quote a lot too. When I was working at the Walgreens in the rough side of town, one time this pastor came in with his wife and "forgot" to pay for their transaction and walked out with $80+ worth of merchandise. Luckily, the cashier remembered the couple mentioning they were going to Pier 1 so she called over there and got them to come back.

He ended up hustling me, telling me that "he didn't have to come back" and that as a reward he should receive $5 in store credit. I threw this line at him,

"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God."

Suggesting his hypocrisy about the situation and he got somewhat angered and said, "Hey now, don't be preaching the word of God to me. I know what the Bible says!". He stood his ground and held up the line until I gave him $5 in store credit, in which he promptly used to buy candy.

Guy was kind of a jagoff.

This was a parable, not a literal verse. But your probably knew that already which is why you left the gospel of Luke part off.

This is amazing. I had no idea the Bible was this good a read. It's like a Dear Penthouse letter that's been put through Google Translate a dozen times.

Yes...popularized by weddings, but if we read this (as well as the rest of the chapter) we see the importance of doing things out of "love" and not because the world tells us we should be doing them. It's a clear distinction between the "Kingdom of the World" and the "Kingdom of God"

 
I really love the Bible because of how it captures how life was thousands of years ago.
6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. According to the Bible, you are plans on getting to heaven just went out the window.
