FBG Dynasty Rankings (1 Viewer)

So based on all these comments, I'm beginning to be of the belief that there really is no such thing as true Dynasty Rankings. There are rankings that project a players value for a few years going forward, but those are based on expectations, and in some cases, no NFL experience. I'm always surprised when I see rookies ranked in the top 15 before the season even starts.
Right. It's simple prognostication, and some people are better at it than others. There are a few suggested things you can go by (like 'always go for talent over situation'), but a lot of it is luck.Look at a guy like Demaryius Thomas. He was a first round dynasty pick. He has undeniable talent, but he has had what is usually a catastrophic injury for skill players. There are rankings out there which have him in the top 100 overall (*overall*, not just WRs), and some dont even rank him in the top 300. So who's right? Rankings are so subjective. For me, I try to take an aggregate of what several guys across several sites are saying, and then make my own decisions based on what I have seen watching the games, what I believe, and which of those rankings I tend to gravitate towards.
but wait...maybe I just defined dynasty rankings. I guess I'm just not sure what else dynasty rankings would represent.
Pretty much.

Thank you sir :goodposting:

Ok why would S-Jackson be ranked #12 ? Dude is 28 with a to of carries on him.I look at rankings for dynasty this week. If I was drafting a team right now who do I take ?Would I grab 28 year old declining S-Jackson or an upside young RB ?In a start up draft S-Jackson would not be the 12th RB off the board he only has a 2-3 year shelf life left at RB 2 production at best maybe less.So many carries logged in his career so far.#18 M-Turner dude is 29 and already slowing to a hault. I can't see it.Charles at 22 ? I know he had an ACL tear but dude is young. If I was in a start up draft you are saying he goes in round 5 ? That is where the 22nd RB would go about.I don't like M-Drew at #4 his knees worry me way too much for dynanty RB 4 I am pretty sure I take McCoy and McFadden who are both younger and not going with bone on bone on their knee.#6 AJ Green wow that is shocking love this talent but he is rated over young proven WR's that are in better situations.Colston at #21 ? This guy is so brittle and will be out of the leauge in 2-3 years become of muliple injuries. I have him in 2 dynasty leagues and I can't trade him for anythnig of value. No one wants him at all. I would take several WR's you have ranked below him straight up.Kenny Britt at 27 ? I would take him over Colston by far. Yes ACL injury but he would have been top 5 without the injury. Seems kind of harsh to rank him so low. I am not taking 30 year old Lloyd over him or Colston or Boldin just to name a few.Gates #4 TE ? Now that one is a complete shocker I have Gates in 2 dynasty leagues no one will give anything at all for him.Why is Gates ranked so high ? You honestly would rather have Gates 31 years old and injured with a possible career ending injury over guys like Gronk and Graham ?That is insane.
I get disagreeing with someone's rankings, but do you really think calling someone out like that is helpful?
So you are saying we should look at rankings and accept them as is and not say a word ? How is that helpful ? So you are saying I can't disagree with them and ask why they are ranked as such ? How is that helpful ?I guess there is no point to anyone having rankings if you are not allowed to disagree and point them out.At least I put why I disagreed with them.Every player for dynasty should have actually 2 rankings. You need a ranking for "Competing for a title now" and a a ranking for "rebiudling"Someone who wants to win a title may give up a young player for a guy like Fred Jackson in trade because they want to win now but Fred Jackson has only a few years of shelf life left.A guy who is rebuilding would gladly trade away F-Jackson for some future picks/prospects.Also I look at ranking dynasty playes as if you had a draft today where would they get picked. That makes the most sense.

Interesting perspective, but the only real difference is that in a dynasty draft, more rookies would be picked in the later rounds. Other than that, I don't see much difference between redraft and dynasty drafting.

That isn't true. Where would Jamal Charles be drafted now in a redraft versus where he would be drafted in a dynasty? If you really don't see much difference, then there is probably not much more I could say that would change your mind.As one who has done dynasty rankings for a few sites in years past, my perspective is that they should be done as if a draft that would be held that day (even during the season when virtually no new leagues begin). Certainly the current season would be factored more heavily in the equation for owners needing to win now, but outside of that I don't think they should be much different than offseason dynasty rankings.

C'mon...who does a draft after 4 weeks. I was talking about preseason drafts. Sorry if I didn't make that clear, but I thought it was obvious.

Well, it wasn't that obvious to me - Dez specifically referred to a draft done today (see bolded above) and this whole thread is based on a discussion of rankings (or lack thereof) during the season, not before the season. I think my confusion was understandable based on what Dez wrote originally.

Sig, as a general point do you find dynasty rankings take more or less time to put together than weekly redraft?
oh geez, doing dynasty rankings is a rabbit hole that can cause days to disappear from your life.
:goodposting: This is the main reason they aren't done more in-season. They are extremely time intensive unless you just slap them together and I don't think that is the right thing to do. Also, our weekly articles are top priority. I usually try to update my IDP dynasty after week 4 and offense after week 5, but that is something I can't guarantee and it doesn't always work out. I am hopeful of getting it done this year and should barring something unforeseen. Last year I think it took me until week 8 or 9 to get them up. I hate to make this sound like an excuse, but time is extremely limited for me. I am a full time college student with a very busy and demanding schedule of classes, not to mention other obligations. I am lucky to get my articles done during the year.
I know it's not your call to make but there are way too many weekly articles. Maybe it's just me but there is so much that it just becomes noise at some point. Do you guys have a way of telling which articles are read the most and least? Maybe do a poll at the end of the season and trim the stuff the subscribers don't care about. And then re-allocate those resources towards more dynasty content.
+1 Many of the weekly articles I don't even read ... dynasty rankings that are updated frequently and reflect emerging/declining players would be FAR more useful then some of the weekly content.
...and another +1, as well. I'm happy with the site but would be thrilled if some of the other stuff was replaced with Dynasty/Keeper news/projections.

Hence my point...Any Dynasty rankings during the season are nebulous and a player's dynasty value is in the eye of the owner. I own Demarious Thomas in one of my dynasty leagues and despite his injury last year, I still see a ton of dynasty value in him. However, what's his value in a trade? I doubt I'd get what I think he's worth. For those of you guys that are looking for in-season dynasty value rankings, perhaps what you really mean is trade value in a dynasty league.

Rankings always should always incorporate trade value and if they don't, what good are they? The value of any player in dynasty is a factor of his current value this season, plus his future value in coming years and both these values go into the mix in any dynasty trade. However, it should be noted that not all dynasty owners use the same time line, SSOG looks at 10 year window, others are living 3-5 years in the future like EBF, I personally look at a 1-3 year window. In the case of Thomas, his current dynasty value is what you can get for him in a trade. In theory, if nobody will pay what you think they should (say a 2012 first) then he is probably really isn't worth that (in his case, there are legitimate concerns with the fact that very few players with achilles injuries have ever returned to form, plus the presence of Lloyd, Decker and Royal). And I am not saying that you are not correct in thinking that he is seriously undervalued (think DMC his first two years in the league) but if no one will meet your asking price, then it usually means he is probably not worth what you think. Yes, this is all a matter of opinion and dynasty rankings (whether preseason or in-season) represent the biases of whoever does the rankings. However, for rankings to be of value to others, they must IMO incorporate current trade value. For instance, one well known poster still ranks Jon Baldwin as the #4 rookie, irrespective of all the problems/issues that have surfaced the last few months. One may think Baldwin is worth more than Delone Carter, Cam Newton, Daniel Thomas or Randall Cobb, but none of those owners would do a straight up trade, so per the conventional wisdom reflected in current trades, he value is not that of the 4th best rookie overall.
