Features of your league (1 Viewer)

Just curious what you think are the best and worst features of leagues? I'll start.

Best:

One league has PPR, that really helps level the field between WRs and RBs.

Another league has a one-day waiting period for injured players. You lose a starter, you get a full day to pick up his replacement before someone else vultures him.

A third league has no limits to the number of positions you can draft. You want to draft 8 RBs but only 1 kicker, so be it.

Worst:

A league I'm in has a set number on the positions, you can ONLY draft 4 RBs but have to draft 3 QBs, etc.

5 bonus points awarded when a receiver gets 5 receptions. 4 gets you no bonus points.

This has to be the worst...something called the Home Field Advantage. Each week one team is designated the "home" team and gets a bonus 3 points arbitrarily. Average score on a week is about 100 points for a team so it has decided some outcomes. Given that only 4 of 12 teams make the playoffs, you can imagine the implications.

How about everyone else's leagues?

Wow, those last two on your "worst" list are terrible.

I am not sure what are the best and worst features of my league. I have been commish of my league for a number of years now, so I have not really run into any major flaws.

I think one of the biggest flaws of my league is that there are no trades. There has not been a trade in my league for two years. I guess this could be good and bad. I will have to continue to think whether there are any flaws or not.

League #1:

Best features -

Its a dynasty league :nerd: (I think every serious FFer should be in at least one)

Its an IDP league

There are no restraints on waivers....first come first serve

We have deep benches (start 14, 30 on roster with 3 IR spots)

We count return yards

Receiving yards are worth 2x's rushing yards (better than PPR to balance scoring)

Have 2 flex positions (RB/WR/TE)

-Worst features

No waiver transactions allowed after week 10

We play a coach who gets points for wins & margin of victory (Belichick is racking up a ton this year)

Turnovers are all -3 points...can kill scores in a hurry

League #2:

Best features -

Start 2 QB's (only 8-team league)

PPR and better pts for receiving yds

My wife plays :lmao: (she finished 3rd last year, but is currently in last)

Worst features -

RB's are downgraded too much

Use team defense instead of IDP

No flex positions

League #1-

Good:

...Hosted at myfantasyleague.com- excellent FFL service.

...PPR

...IDP

...1 IR slot

...Everyone has the same scoring scheme. No problem if your offensive player makes a tackle after an interception, a defensive player comes in as a tight end, the halfback throws a pass, etc. They all get the same points for their actions on the field.

Bad:

...Limits on the number of players you can draft at a position.

...Only 3 trades in the league in 6 years. No one wants to deal.

League #2-

Good:

...Not much.

Bad:

...Hosted at Yahoo- yuck!!

...Team Defense.

...No IR slot.

Last year my league decided to go in sort of a dynasty direction with a few kinks. Teams can only keep 2 players year to year, and they may not be any of the top 40 players selected in the previous year's draft. The draft works like a redraft, but if/when one of your keepers are picked by another team, you have the option to let the player go, or have the player be your next round pick.

We have found this strategy still keeps the draft fun and interesting. At the same time, teams can also get players for next season if their team is out of the playoffs, trade draft picks, etc. Everybody in the league likes this system, although we may eventually go to a full dynasty setup.

One cool playoff wrinkle we have is that in a 12 team league - 6 teams make the playoffs.... The top two teams get a playoff BYE the 1st week in week 14.... (The 4 Wild card teams play eachother)

The BYE teams Play eachother anyway only for the right to pick which wild card team thay want to play....

I LOVE this..... Sometimes the better team winds up playing the more difficult opponent by default...

Now, you give teams with a BYE week something to play for!!!!!! And with the BYE they get rewarded for a good season without getting picked off in week 1 of the playoffs.

Not sure if it's what the OP is looking for, but mine...

Worst Feature: Our software, Webleaguemanager, is easily the worst I've ever dealt with as a commish. First year trying it, almost had a guy quit because it was so bad. The most non-user friendly, bare-boned league site I've ever encountered. First and last time trying it out. Hello MFL.

Best Feature: I've came up with some side games for everyone, and they love it. Even teams out of contention are loving it. Includes Week 17 "Pro Bowl" (pick a roster, any roster, winner take all), NFL Playoff fantasy pick'em (similiar to what FBG does every year), and a Survivor Pool. Plenty of $$$ to be won, keeps everyone happy all year long. % of proceeds goes towards Super Bowl kegger!

my main league switched to a Free-Agent Auction this year and it has been phenomenal.

we've never used a waiver system, it's always been 1st come 1st served. we have people from both coasts, so the tuesday FA opening time was always inconvenient for someone (i spent 3 years waking up at 3am every tuesday in the fall).

to me, the FA auction seems to be the only way to go. it adds another layer of strategy and i get to sleep on monday nights now.

Best from different DYNASTY leagues:

MyFantasyLeague.com

Locking players dropped during waivers until the next week so everyone has a shot at them

Blind-bid waivers

2-4 RB/2-4 WR - start six total; equalizes the value of each position

PPR .5 RBs, 1.0 WRs, 1.5 TEs; equalizes the value of each position

Making WR/TE one position

Having 80+ RBs/WRs/TEs start each week

Assigning meaningful points to D/STs so they become part of the game each week

Deep benches (250+ QBs/RBs/WRs/TEs owned)

Rewarding points leader in meaningful ways; takes some of the luck out of H2H leagues

We did the same a few years ago with placing blind bids until Wednesday deadline (rest of week is first come first serve). We bid using real dollars and bids range from fifty cents up to over $10. The pool of add/drop money is then split among regular season best record and the super bowl champion. We are an auction draft league, so it fit well to go to auction style for the add/drops.I have a buddy who plays in a league that isn't exactly true keeper, but rather they put one player each year on a three year contract (must designate that player soon after the draft). So they have three players on contract at any given time (1 yr left, 2yr left, and 3 yr left). Those players can be traded, and the contract would go with them. I bug these guys every week to let me know if they ever have an openings. Seems like a fun format. I'm not shark enough to play a full dynasty or even an intense keeper league, but this modified format seems like it would be fun.

I think I like this...

Making exception for this one in the Shark Pool as it does have broader appeal to other people beyond a "my league" angle.

J

Best feature (.5ppr for RB, 1PPR for WR, 1.5 PPR for TE)

Gates is #6

Gonzo #7

Worst feature

in my other league (.5PPR fro all)

Gates is not even in the top 30

I can't really complain about or rave about any of our features. However, I would like to see a feature implemented next season: You only get 90% of a player's weekly fantasy points if the NFL team that he plays for loses. The "90%" is arbitrary. It could be 95% or 50%, whatever the league-consensus agrees upon.

Earlier in the thread, Jayrod mentioned that one of his worst features was playing a coach and getting points for a win. I kind of like that feature.

Thanks Joe, as someone who runs two leagues I am always looking for ways to improve it, then we vote on it. Some really great ideas here.

TIES TIES TIES. We've had THREE already this year in a 10-teamer.Fractional scoring, here we come.
:bye: I forgot to mention that as good feature. Both of my leagues are fractional scoring and it makes a difference. The top team in one of our leagues lost by .3 points in week 1 and would have tied without it.

Only a 14 player roster.

We can only carry (and must carry) 2 qbs, 3 rbs, 3 wrs, 2 tes, 2 pks, 2 defs on our roster.

Top three point leaders each week get $. :)

Best: PPR league plus starting 2 QBs makes the draft a lot more interesting than "RB1 RB2 hmmm, QB or RB3?"

Worst: Short benches - one player per position - make transactions a necessity. Would love to see a three player any position taxi squad drafted after the teams have been completed - it would foster more trades, allow more strategy, etc.

Best:

- Lots of flexibility: Start 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 TE, but then 2 RB/WR/TE and 1 WR/TE. Most guys go 2 RBs/3 WRs/1 TE, but depending on bye weeks or matchups, it's not uncommon to see 3/2/1, 1/4/1 or even 2/2/2 or 1/3/2 on occasion. One guy was really hurt with byes and went 2/1/3 one week (and won!). Still waiting to see the 1/1/4 attack.

- 0.5pts/rec: Gives a little bump to WRs and TEs. We did 1pt/rec years ago and it seemed too much.

- Three IDP spots. Just enough to affect outcomes on occasion. Also gives a rooting interest in certain guys on D when they're on the field.

- Top two seeds get a bye in week 14 (title game is week 16, six of 12 teams make playoffs).

- Non-playoff teams have their own playoff to determine draft seeding. No tanking ensues.

Worst:

- Rosters are shallow, considering the flex options. Can only roster 4 RBs and 4 WRs max. This realistically leaves no room for handcuffs, especially during bye weeks.

- No IR slot. ESPN.com managed the IR spot well, but we've switched to CBS and it's manually handled by the commish. The commish doesn't want to bother with it, so we've done away with it. With our shallow rosters, the IR slot is huge when studs get dinged up for a week or two.

- WW order determined worst-to-first each week. Honestly, it hasn't resulted in catapulting a lousy owner to a title contender due to an out-of-nowhere stud falling into his lap, but the concept reeks of rewarding bad drafting. I'd like to see a WW auction instead.

- One keeper, no restrictions. I could have put this in the "best" category as well, especially if I had LDT. The LDT owner starts every year miles ahead of everyone else before a single pick has been made. This year, the guy who ended up with ADP (2nd-round pick, IIRC) will go into every draft with a huge edge (he'd be crazy not to keep him). I'd like to see owners have to give up a draft pick to hold onto their keeper.

- Three IDP spots. Just enough to affect outcomes on occasion. Also gives a rooting interest in certain guys on D when they're on the field.
This is a huge reason why I love IDP. I'm not just rooting for some WR to catch passes, but I also get excited when a MLB makes a solo tackle on the WR after he catches the pass.

Best: It's an auction league but the salary cap must be maintained throughout the season, not just on draft day. It makes bidding on free agents interesting.

Worst: No bench. Everyone starts and on bye weeks you are either screwed or need to cut players.

This is a great thread and I'm definitely taking notes. I think the best feature in my league is our keeper system. Any player has a max 3 year contract regardless of waivers/trades. We have 15 rounds. Each round has a point value to it and each owner has a maximum of 30 points and cannot go over his point allotment. A player taken in the previous year's 1st round is worth 16 points, previous year's 2nd round pick worth 15 points, all the way to the final round being worth 1 point. Each player moves up 1 round every year, except for your first rounder, meaning if you drafted a player in the 4th round this year, if you wanted to keep him next year, he'd cost you a 3rd rounder. Free Agents picked up the previous year will cost you a 15th rounder, but you can assign multiple free agents to a higher draft slot if you would like to keep more than one.

Best:

double header week in week 11 so we have a balanced schedule, but can still start playoffs in week 13

two week Super Bowl.....combine scores from week 16 and 17.....

two TE options for starting lineup

Draft Day is awesome

Worst:

have to start the same lineup for each game in the double header week....can't change it up...ie: to play a different WR since your going against that guys QB

that we can't figure out a way to not count INt and Fum returns for TD's agianst the points scored against someone's defense

My league - 2 Keeper one Free agent

BEST

------

- Keeper league with 3 year contracts means there are tons of trades

- Each team names a free agent at the end of the year that other teams then bid on using draft picks

- Open 16 man rosters - Starting lineups must meet pre selected formations that range from Run-n-Shoot to Full T's

Worst

-------

- Lots of rules that deal with our "free agents" that can get complicated and as owners learn more about the system, they learn to exploit it as well. Thus we have constant rule changes regarding it

I have a similar personal pet peeve. I can't count how many times in the past 4 years that has cost me games(actually, I can. It's 5...lucky bastards.) My defense DIDN'T give up those points, dammit!!! And it's not that we can't figure out a way to have it calculate properly, it's that 8 out of our 12 members don't want to change it. Phillistines!Okay, back on my meds now. :thumbup:Good:Blind biddingFractional scoringLineup flexibilityDeep benchesNo positional limits(other than you gotta have at least one of every position to start each week, even if you're taking a zero on a bye)PPR3rd round reversalBad:Bonus points for "homerun" TDs(I used to dig this, but it's such a b*@#$fest every week when someone loses because of it I'd just as soon see it be put down.)Aforementioned INT returns/etc. being counted against a defenseLack of "sidegames" or "motivational payouts" to keep the also-rans as interested as they could be.

How does the IR slot work??

12 Team league - for Bye weeks you can have the average of your kicker or Defense Points instead of having to waive one to cover the week. THis is a great feature IMHO as our roster space is limited to a 6 person bench. Of course, you can waive the K or D, but you do not have to.
