There are still a couple movies I need to watch for this year, but I still argue that this is a pretty damn good year and has great entries from every genre.

I might do a couple re-watches, but I don't have a ton on my list to watch brand new unless @krista4 or others chime in with a foreign movie that might have slipped by me.  As of now, I just have Junebug and The New World as new ones, and I am not sure I am going to get the The New World and it's almost 3 hour run time.

I will update the links for the streaming sites later as well as add the links for the previous year polls.

Not sure about the 5/27 due date with it coming over the Memorial Day weekend, so that might get pushed up to Monday or Tuesday night if need be.

Never saw The New World - run time has scared me off.

So the next countdown will be on Memorial Day?
That's where the hesitation came in.  That is what the schedule would be, but I am not sure if that's the best day to do it, so I might push the countdown off until Tues.

Lots of good movies, not many great ones.
I guess that is where I disagree with a lot of you guys who are posting this.   It's not really worth debating newer movies vs. "all timers", but like I said in the other thread I think this has some of the best movies of the 00s decade in this year:

Documentaries:  Grizzly Man, Murderball, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, The Devil and Daniel Johnson

Comedy (the last 2 aren't straight comedy):  40yr Old Virgin, Wedding Crashers, Thank You for Smoking, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Drama:  Brokeback, A History of Violence, Syriana, Munich, Good Night/Good Luck, Capote

Horror:  The Descent, Hostel, Devil's Rejects

Fun popcorn movies:  Batman Begins, HP and the Goblet of Fire, Serenity

And that is off the top of my head.

Yeah, I consider lots of these to be "good not great".  I understand how groundbreaking Brokeback is, but I found it rather boring to be honest.  History of Violence is probably my favorite Drama.

For horror, I think The Descent is slightly overrated.  It's good, but I don't put it as high as most horror buffs.  After seeing Martyrs, other "torture porn" movies like Hostel just seem lousy by comparison.  Martyrs was just that good and showed that this kind of movie can be more than just the gore.  For Devil's Rejects, I've never been a big fan of Rob Zombie's style.  I'll probably have the Exorcism of Emily Rose, and maybe even Saw 2 on my list.

Fair enough.  I seemed to be a lot more excited about the other newer year that we had vs. the rest of the participants as well.

I think a bit has to do with me really hitting the movie watching hard during the 00s because I had the video store and I seem to have a built-in nostalgia (if you can call it that for something that is <10 years ago) for the core years of this decade.   I seem to want to go to battle over these movies like most of you want to with your earlier years.

I realize that I am in the minority on the Hostel movies, but I think the two are well done and I think Roth has more to say than the crappy Saw movies that seem to be 10x more popular.  I think the idea of getting stuck in a foreign movie like that and having ####ed up rich people paying to be able to do that scary as hell.   That said, if I had to pick a couple Saw movies to watch, 2 and I think 4 would be the ones.

Why? Do you think Hostel is above being labeled as such?
I think it's just an annoying phrase that people use to write off horror movies as having 0 value other than gore.  It grinds my gears even more when fans of the genre use it.  It's just one my pet peeves that really bothers the hell out of me.

Hostel is no more violent and gory than most R rated action and war movies.

Yeah, I'd get pissed off if someone dismissed something like Martyrs as just torture porn, but there is a lot of crap out out there that deserves the label.

I just can't think of a horror movie that deserves that label.   Bad <> torture porn (WTF is the phrase even supposed to mean, anyway).   Like I said, overall I think it's just been picked up by people who don't watch or like the genre to easily dismiss it without thinking about it.

I consider the following to be great movies:

Batman Begins

Brokeback Mountain

Kingdom of Heaven

Walk the Line

Cinderella Man

I’ll take a look later this morning and see what I find.  Seeing the results from 1992 made me wish I’d hyped some stuff there.

How scary are the horror movies you put on your list?  Which one is best?

@krista4

It will seem like I am backing away from my stance in the above posts, but I will be honest and say that I am not sure that anybody that doesn't really watch the genre a lot are going to like any of the horror movies I listed.  I think they are polarizing even for horror fans.

I plan to watch The Descent again before voting, but MAYBE that one based on your love of the outdoors and hiking.  Basically a group of women go into a cave and ....  I am in the minority with my love for Hostel, and like scoresman said, Rob Zombie's style is very hit or miss for people too.   I think as far as tense/scary, The Descent is probably the top one, the others are more in the "####ed up" category, but not scary.

I am sure there are others years where I will be more willing to suggest ones to you - ie Behind the Mask since you liked the other horror/comedies, or some foreign ones that I think are amazing like The Orphanage or Let the Right One In.

Next up we will be going past AD's 1975 barrier and covering 1971.
Wheelhouse, ##### - the year i saw more flicks as cargo (snuck by trunk into drive-ins) than as a ticket buyer. Of course, if this Movie Poll Bunch were my age, Billy Jack would be runaway winner............

Never saw The New World - run time has scared me off.

So the next countdown will be on Memorial Day?
I loved earlier Malick- badlands, days of heaven and thin red line. new world felt like where he went a bit off the rails with the hugely extended nature shots and heavy-handed theme of nature/natural-state vs humanity... but I still really liked the movie. that said- there's a coda at the end that felt unnecessary and IMO it's absence would make the film better (and shorter).

eta: the story is interesting from a history perspective, very well acted and of course lusciously beautiful to look at.

one that jumped out that I remember liking (not loving) but had completely forgotten about was Tristam Shandy a #### and Bull Story... anybody else see and/or enjoy that one?>

I have  a vague recollection of watching and liking it.   That might be one for me to re-watch if the library has it.

Yeah, I was very nicely surprised by the options for 1971 and have started to gather my research pile.
I also like that it includes some that I was just recently thinking about.  After watching Fabulous Baker Boys, I was thinking that I need to watch The Last Picture Show for some early Jeff Bridges.  And, after The Player, I was thinking the same about McCabe & Mrs. Miller for some early Altman.

Just for giggles....

So far the #1 movie for each year we've done has been:

1974 - Godfather II            711 points

1982 - Blade Runner         693 points

1989 - Major League        277 points

1992 - Reservoir Dogs    405 points

1999 - Fight Club             615 points

2010 - Inception               245 points

____________________________________________

If I had to rank them so far, from my own personal like/dislike point of view, I would go: Godfather II, Reservoir Dogs, Fight Club, Blade Runner, Major League, Inception.

It's also interesting that so far the most hated #1 by post count - Major League joins Inception as having so few points compared to the others.  Granted, amount of voters plays a part in that, but it's not absolutely controlling.

Nice! Thanks.

Another nice thing that I should have done is keep track of the movies that got over a certain threshold of points.  not sure what it would be 400? 500?  Basically a who's who of FFA movies, and I am sure there are year we will have a couple of them that will outscore other year's #1s.

Given what the first 6 years gave us....... I'd say if you were going to do that, 500 should be threshold.  It also has the nice sports connotation to it since the 500 club used to mean a great deal.

Sounds good.  I still have to do the links to the old drafts tonight, so as I do that I will look through and make a post about the past #1s and the 500pt club.

Major League really is an outlier there.  I didn't like Inception but I get why it would score for the visuals alone.  I don't begrudge the movie or its fans, its just not me.  And I loved Major League.  But it isn't the best comedy ever, nor the best baseball movie, nor the best Rene' Russo movie, nor the best Charlie Sheen movie, nor the best soundtrack, or really anything.  It's just solid comedy fun.

The other movies that have gotten number 1 can be considered close to all time cinema/movie historic greats.

Yeah, I really didn't see the Major League thing coming. It was like we were the bizzaro Academy awards.

   I've seen and liked both The Orphanage and Let the Right One In.  I'll check out The Descent if I find the time.

I really liked it, but I have an unreasonable love for Steve Coogan.

:goodposting: This is what I was trying to say when I responded to that being #1.
