I am more surprised by the ED2 ranking than I am the Shaun of the Dead ranking.

well said, pretty much how I feel.I am more surprised by the ED2 ranking than I am the Shaun of the Dead ranking.

It's the comedic aspects of the franchise that just don't stick with me. If you're going to be a mix of comedy and horror that's fine, but do one or both really well. I don't really laugh at the Evil Dead movies, but at the same time the zombies/monsters are too comical to be scared of.

This, exactly. There's nothing at all wrong with this movie - it is fine. My expectations were set too high and I came away kind of actively disliking it as a result. That's on me though.I liked A Quiet Place but think, for me, it suffered from being over-hyped at the time. I expected more.
Really looking forward to this prequel.Really enjoyed this one. Sequel I didn't like as much. This Summer comes the third installment, "A Quiet Place: Day One", which looks over-the-top intense and fun.#49 - A Quiet Place

It is a timeless look. Most subsequent vampire films went for a more seductive look, and the ones that didn't were savage in a different way. Count Orlok is a one-of-a-kind vampire. Can modern audiences be scared by a silent film over 100 years old? Maybe not but the sense of eerieness still translates well#45 - Nosferatu

I included this on my list because of how absolutely timeless the visual is of Count Orlok. No other old movie can claim this. That said, I can't sit through a silent. If you want the creepiness of this Dracula, but with watchable, modern filmmaking, the 1979 Herzog movie is king. No other Dracula portrayal in film compares to these two.
I can't remember the last time I watched this movie without putting on Metallica. It's like the horror version of Dark Side of the Rainbow.#45 - Nosferatu

This is one that triggers a specific memory for me. Sleepover at a friend's house. They got a fancy new VCR that allowed slow motion play and we spent 10 minutes playing the sledgehammer ankle scene back in slow motion over and over. So fun!
It would have gotten more of a boost with me - I had it as high as IK and probably a tad higher - in the 10/11 range.#46 - Barbarian

Just in the interest of explaining where I'm coming from, here are some of the things I enjoy about Barbarian:
I'll admit that the conclusion could be better, but for me personally, that's beside the point.
- The casting. Bill Skarsgard and Justin Long were wonderful choices for these roles. Yes, it violates the usual rule about not wanting people to immediately recognize the actors in a horror film, but it adds to the experience here because of the misdirection. Georgina Campbell is good too, of course.
- The entire first act. Every interaction between Tess and Keith is believably (IMO) awkward, and while you know that this movie is going somewhere, it does a good job of keeping the viewer guessing.
- The hard transition after the first act. The first time I watched this movie, I literally checked to make sure I didn't accidentally switch to some other show somehow. It was like Cabin in the Woods, where people wondered if they were in the right theater at first. Again, the audience is kept off-balance.
- The flashback. My wife hated this part because of how disturbing she found it. That was messed up, even if I know the math doesn't really work out right.
- The setting. Bombed-out Detroit is a nice change of pace. I like how they kind of turned the house itself in something like a character, where we got to explore the tunnels, see it when the neighborhood was still nice, etc. This was good world-building.
- I mentioned in my write-up of Hostel that I liked the social commentary in that movie, so of course I liked it here too. It's very similar.
1979 also featured George Hamilton’s Love at First Bite. I have not seen that one listed yet — surely, pretty high on the horror list.Interesting in that same year of 1979, the vampire Barlow in Salem’s Lot bore a striking resemblance to Nosferatu.#45 - Nosferatu

Love the old films when you can hear the crackling sounds come through the speakers. Like an old record.I know not everyone gets into the older movies, but some of them have a certain mood/ambiance to them that most modern films don't. It's the same reason that I'd rather watch old Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons than most of Walt Disney's later creations.

The writer/director got some of the ideas and themes from a book - The Gift of Fear. That's why the first act is loaded with blinking red signs for dangers to women. Then he pokes fun at the idea because Justin Long goes in the basement and doesn't have a damn care or fear in the world. I was laughing a lot at him and his intentional douchery. It worked for me.
Like I said, I thought Act 1 was genuinely creepy, it actually got to me. Act 2 was surprising WTF? and it made me laugh a lot. I had to stop the movie and rewind the first time because I was laughing so hard when he googled about square footage.Act 3 is another bizzare turn and quite unsettling. Again, the ending stunk, but up to that point I'm not sure what else horror fans want.
I think the old school monsters are cool. I remember Rob zombie doing a concert with them all as backdropsMaybe you had to be there at the time. I look at Lugosi’s Dracula and he looks more like a goon in Don Corleone’s family than a vampire.Criminally low. Barely made the top 50.#50 - Dracula

But as Rodney Dangerfield would say, "Looks good on you though!"I thought it was total garbage.
The conceit doesn't work (this ONE house is the one kept up on the neighborhood and the girl says 'okay, I guess I HAVE to stay here') and it breaks its own internal rules (superhuman abilities all of a sudden?) because it knows it's not exciting enough.
I've purged the details from my memory because I genuinely think it's utter dreck.
