on a long fg attempt to have a guy at the post and try to bat down a fg attempt that just makes it over

Didn't someone last week or the week before score a TD on a FG attempt that came up short?

what about standing on the post? Or a sumo-wrestler/hockey goalie? Not sure why an NHL team hasn't stuck some morbidly obese individual between the posts...

He wouldn't be quick enough. And if he was big enough to cover the entire net without moving, he'd be too big for regulation-size goalie pads, and he'd get hurt.

I know - I was just answering Marc's question.

It probably isn't done because its a very low percentage play. The crossbar is 10' high, so to block a FG you have to, in effect, be able to dunk a basketball in full gear. There are some players who can, but most can't. The FG attempt must be close enough to the crossbar for the player to get a hand on it; how many 'just' clear the crossbar (not many, I'd wager)? If the defense fields a short kick, they either have to return it or take the touchback. In most cases, they'd be giving up field position.

It might make sense on a long game-winning attempt such as Eagles-Bucs - but Bryant made that 62-yarder with plenty to spare. I'd guess coaches have set it up in practice, and found that its more likely that that 11th man will block the kick at the line instead of at the crossbar.

And if you ever see anyone dunking the football over the GPost, they barely get the ball over - I doubt any player can jump high enough to actually block a FG attempt, except for the VERY rare FG attempts that graze the GPost.

And finally, there is the possibility of the ball being deflected over the crossbar and through when it may otherwise have hit the crossbar and bounced back. This topic is similar to the why don't teams sign NBA centers to be tight ends around the goal line threads. Interesting idea, but highly specialized to the point of being a waste of a roster spot. I like the 7-foot TE better than the knock a FG down at the post idea. In fact, if you have a 7-foot TE, then he could also stand back at the posts during the long attempts...

Back in the sixties, RC Owens playing for the Colts, blocked a kick at the crossbar. :hey:

I think they changed the rules so it could not be done this way anymore but I'm not positive.

Back then, the FG Post was out in front of the TD GL.

Well, a quick Google search reveals that it's illegal. I'm also willing to bet that the guy is more valuable trying to block at the line of scrimmage than perfectly executing a leaping block at the crossbar as noted above.
