One of my life quests is to play through the entire FF series. Im more than half way there. Im curious who else is a fan of the series and where you rank each game that you have played. Feel free to give a description of why you like or dislike each title

My rankings

1- FF 6 (FF 3 in the US). This was the first one I ever played and it is an all around masterpiece. Unique characters and an epic story like a fine opera. This game was huge and threw twists and secrets at you at every turn. Massive replay value on this one

2-FF 7. Another epic masterpiece that was narrowly edged out by 6 because of the era 6 was released. This was the first 3D game in the series and loaded with content. The materia system allowed endless customization. Some of the most ridiculously difficult boss fights ever seen were in this one and the story is top notch

3-FF 9- loved that this one brought back the old school feel with the modern bells and whistles. The game was a bit short but had a great storyline and characters. Who doesnt love Vivi?

4-FF 5 ( I thinl this was released as FF 2 in the US). This game was a vision of things to come in FF6. Offering a deep story and world and brought back the job system which many love ( not my favorite system personally).

5- FF 4 . Currently playing through the 3D remake and its pretty sweet. Very dark story and interesting characters, but dont get attached to anyone because they might die. First game to use the ATB (active time battle) system

6- FF 13 A radical departure for the series. The paradigm system was a bit too fast paced and hands-off for my taste but interesting. The crystarium was a deep progression system. I enjoyed this game for being unique but I found the story uninteresting and the game too short and linear

7- FF 3. First game to introduce the job system. This was a fun old school rpg but lacked depth. It was pretty short and linear but never confuses you of where to go next. First game to introduce summons

8- FF 10. Didnt find this one very memorable, I dont even recall if I ever finished it. I didnt find the story or characters endearing

9- FF 8. I thought this was a real stinker. I dont recall enjoying anything about this game and I know I never finished it. Story and characters were bland and the magic draw system was tedious

My fav is 12. I love the open-ended nature of it and the real time combat. The plot is meh but the gameplay is the best of the FFs.

Cant wait for FF6 on my phone. Should be released any day now.

Correction. You are right. They must have just released it because I was looking for it a few weeks ago

I came in here expecting to read 12 replies on what insanely vulgar sex act members would commit before they died.

1 and 2 are on phones too. 2 is godawful.
Whats wrong with 2?
the leveling system is the worst in RPG history. Each individual stat goes up based on you using it. So, hit points go up when you get hit. so you'd have to do things like grind out battles where you did nothing but get hit to raise your HP, and so on. If you don't do this you can end up in a situation where you progress in the game but because you didn't grind for HP, you get one shot all the time. It's horribly balanced.

I see what you mean. Not looking forward to it but one day ill have to soldier through

7 by far.

I enjoyed Tactics as well. A lot.

FYI, 6 was released on Android and then pulled. Not sure if its back out there or not right now.

I've played 4, 5, and everything after (and including) 7.

I don't know if we are counting it because it isn't the main series, but Tactics is by far the best one. I haven't played 6 though, so that might change if I ever get around to it.

9 is probably my favorite main series game, but it's impossible to replay it because the battle system is SOOOOOO slow. 12 and 13 are garbage. The rest of them are good. 7 is my favorite to replay.

Edit: Haven't played the new MMO either, but I did enjoy 11 for a little while. I'm not a big MMO guy, but I played it for a year or so and had a lot of fun.

Haaaaave you met Larryboy? Yeah. He's a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series. Can't have a video game draft without Larryboy drafting a Final Fantasy game in every category. If someone made a Final Fantasy mod into a sports game, he'd probably draft that too.

Oh, and it was Final Fantasy IV that was re-titled Final Fantasy II in the US.

played 7, 8 & 9 on PS1.

played 10, 12 & 13 on PS2.

played 5 & 6 on a PC emulator.

7 is the easy favorite for most; even with crap graphics it would still be good today.

I also liked 10 a lot, and they will be releasing a PS3 remake sometime this year.

9 was good because they actually made it "fantasy" like.

8 was a grind, 12 was just okay (the main character sucked), and I didn't care much for 13.

I think 15 comes out this year for PS4, and I'm stoked. :nerd:

I've played 6, 7, and 8, and while I enjoyed all of them I think 7 is by far my favorite. In fact, it might be my favorite RPG of all time.

Try final Fantasy dimensions on mobile, I really enjoyed it
Which other FF would you compare it to in size and scope?

I want to get an idea of how much bang for my buck. Square really gouges you on the apps
I would compare it to final Fantasy 2 on snes but a 35 hour game

I thought it was a solid value

I thought it was fun and a good classic ff

Did it have the same leveling system?

If you want positives about viii (that any non-nostalgic player can give you) is the music, the graphics, pacing/scaling and the card game.

That card game is strangely addicting, especially once you figure out you can turn them into items that can be used to permanently boost your vital stats (Strength, Magic, Vitality, etc...) I think I've heard of people boosting all their stats to 255 after spending hundreds of hours doing that.

The music in VIII is incredible. It's probably my favorite game soundtrack.

The card game is the best minigame in ANY video game. That's not an opinion, it's a fact. Thinking about it makes me want to play VIII again.

I played way too much blitzball in FFX.

The story wasn't great, but the sphere grid and monster collecting gave us idiots who try to be 100% complete things to do forever.

FF7 is one of the best video games ever. I generally can't stand long RPG video games, and put in a good solid 100 hrs beating every part of 7.

I F'ing loved that card game. So simple yet addicting.

I got stuck in the Atma Ruins and never got around to try to finish it. But yeah, Blitz ball was pretty sweet. Recruiting players was fun.

FF2 on SNES (which is FF IV, no?) was a pretty classic leveling system by just fighting.

Dimensions has some variety.

All I can tell you is that it was a good game and $15 for that much entertainment when I used to pay $50 for the same type of game is sweet.

Ok I got you....I meant the japanese FF2 which you said was unbalanced

I hate the different numbering system. Im going to check out dimensions as soon as I can

I have loved the Final Fantasy Series (and other RPG's by Square).. although I have not purchased a video game system beyond PS2/Wii so I have stopped with FF12.. although I have purchased and enjoyed some of the final fantasy remakes for tablet)

My favorites:

FFIV - FF2 on SNES - I played this game more than about any other.. it was really enjoyable... truly landmark for its time and such a change from FF 1

FF 9 - this was just a great PS3 game - I didn't think 8 was all that great so this was a great game.. especially on the heels of 7 which was incredible. I would love to see 7 get remade with better graphics - I don't think this game has as much replay value without it.

FF 6 - FF3 on SNES - another one where they knocked it out of the park with both story and gameplay.

I really liked FF 12's playability but the story was so lame to me.

Some off FF RPG's I enjoyed:

Chrono Trigger - man that was a great game in terms of both story and playability... Square just killed it on SNES with FF 2, 3, then Chrono Trigger.

Xenoblade Chronicles - a Wii RPG and that was a very good game that I really enjoyed again both story and gameplay.. I'm not wild on RPG's that rely on fancy button pushing to make moves happen... but this one was very good despite that.

FF7 is pretty much considered the best rpg of all time.
By whom?

I think most people would say that FF6 and Chrono Trigger are better. I'd also throw out Persona 4 Golden, Xenogears, and FF Tactics as better games.

FF7 is a great game, and certainly belongs in the top 5 RPG of all time discussion, but anyone that is putting it as number 1 probably hasn't played a lot of other RPGs.

RPGs are my favorite genre - i wouldn't rank any FF game in my top 10. No chrono trigger, no secret of mana and no Earthbound either.

While guys who are. 5-7 years you get then I will argue that the SNES was a golden age of RPGs, but I hated ALL of them.

I beat FF7 and Secret of Mana.

Oh god I HATE all of those!!!!

If the game was on the SNES or has giant block heads , odds are I hated it.

When discussing all time best RPGs there needs to be a distinction between action RPGs and traditional

i agree.

the traditional RPG is pretty much straight button pushing when fighting. The action RPG requires quite a bit more activity.

Xenoblade chronicles and The Last Story on Wii were my first and only action RPG's.. and i liked them, but prefer the more chill gameplay of a traditional RPG.

Interested to see this.

I don't understand how you can hate SNES era RPGs. That's the best console for them.

In no order...

Dark Souls

Ultima Online

Ultima IIV:The Black Gate

Phantasy Star

Phantasy Star II

Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternsl Sun

Fallout: New Vegas

Goveleous

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Castlevania: SOTN

That's 10 - there are prolly more deserving but that's off the top of my head.

Ultima 6 and 7 were both amongst my favorites, despite being drastically different.

FFVII is in my top 5 though, easily.
