Finding common ground (1 Viewer)

For the sake of good reading I think the point is to say 2 things you like with a 'side' you supposedly oppose. You can't think of anything?
as Thorn said, the idea of a "side" doesn't really make sense, or at least ideally wouldn't for most people.

"Everybody's so busy wanting to be down with the gang. "I'm conservative", "I'm liberal", "I'm conservative". Bull####! Be a ####### person! Lis-ten! Let it swirl around your head. Then form your opinion. No normal, decent person is one thing, okay? I've got some #### I'm conservative about, I've got some #### I'm liberal about. Crime, I'm conservative. Prostitution, I'm liberal!"

I agree especially as Trump has created a new fulcrum. The assumption of a 'side' is created in the OP IIRC.

Part of the admins master plan imo.

And to contribute to the purpose of this thread,

I am socially liberal; yet, I am adopted. Thus, I do have a bias against abortion, but I do not believe Roe vs. Wade should be overturned. However, when/if future technology allows easy/effective embryo development outside of the human womb, I may have to seriously evaluate my opinion on the matter.  Of course, I would still likely have exceptions.

I am conservative in my opinions regarding the right to bear arms, but I believe all loop holes (e.g. gunshow, etc.) should be closed, and greater efforts should be made to keep guns out of the hands of potentially dangerous people.  Plus, I loathe the NRA...cancelled my membership years ago.

This thread is a difficult one. I don't think I'm conservative about much of anything. Maybe something will come to me by and by.

For much of my life I was a self described "Maryland Republican". That meant I was a political outcast at home & a flaming liberal to most other other Republicans.

I was raised catholic & wish there wasn't a need for abortion, but I don't think an individual's religious convictions should impinge on the rights of someone who doesn't hold the same beliefs.

I used to be pro-death penalty, but I have decided that the death penalty as we have it now is unjust.

I believe in a strong military to promote national defense. We fought hard to create this country, and we should not let anyone endanger our way of life.

I don't believe that being an american citizen entitles you to a good paying job/benefits, a nice house etc. These things are earned.

Education + hard work increase the probability of success  but do not guarantee it. EVERYONE is entitled to a quality education thru grade 12. The system we have now does not account for all socio-economic environments. Extending the school day & eliminating homework can help remove the disadvantage of having parents for whom education is not their top priority (for reasons too numerous to go into here). Extending the school year is also an excellent way to counter the brain drain of underprivileged students.

We have a Bill of Rights, not a Bill of Restrictions. If there is a need to suspend any of these rights for anyone, it should not happen lightly and nor should it happen without due process.

I will not say who I voted for, but I can tell you that I absolutely positively did NOT vote for Hillary.

N.B. Those who feel the need to call me a Nazi will be put on Iggy's List ;)

I oppose everything this GOP stands for and hope they go the way of the Whig party by the next election cycle, close up shop and 150 years from now they are remembered just like the Whigs.  I am not a Democrat.

With that, I have no idea what side I am.  I would say I'm a conservative but that label seems to have changed its meaning like the word literally in the dictionary that now means...... the exact opposite of literally.  It's literally that bad.

I am a "Kentucky Liberal".  This means that in KY, I am a political outcast & in Louisville (my city), I am slightly left. In regards to the rest of the nation...   ...hard to get into the minds of others...thus, others shall have to label me; I can't. Oddly enough though, I am a registered Republican. It allows me to vote in the primaries for the potential candidates who are most likely being elected in a state Red as mine.

I was raised catholic
Me too...Roman Catholic. I have not been active with the church since college, but I consider myself very spiritual. (Covered my views on abortion above, so clipped that part)

I used to be pro-death penalty, but I have decided that the death penalty as we have it now is unjust.
Totally agreed. I will not argue that NO ONE deserves it, rather, I just don't believe humans are capable of making this judgement (e.g. DNA over-turns, etc.).

I believe in a strong military to promote national defense. We fought hard to create this country, and we should not let anyone endanger our way of life.
I agree here as well, although, I personally would have a very difficult time being a soldier (would not dodge a draft though); MUCH respect for soldiers.

Yes, these things are earned. I paint houses and take pictures now...not much money in this, but I make it work, and I am proud.

I cannot word this any better; which means I agree.

Amen!

I will not say who I voted for, but I can tell you that I absolutely positively did NOT vote for Hillary.
I liked Bernie Sanders and John Kasich...which means I did not vote for them in the general. I did not vote for DJT, but I love many who did; I understand their choice, support them and still love them.

NAZI!!!!  :P

Great post Bowie!

I moved to VA 15 years ago & now I'm a "VA Republican" in Northern VA, so I'm STILL an outcast. MD, DC & VA all went to Hillary in the electoral college as expected. I know a LOT of people who realized  that Hillary had VA in the bag due to Northern VA & Hampton Roads so they voted for "Anyone but Hillary".

In my US house of reps district  a democrat ran unopposed and write ins accounted for over 12% of the votes. I wrote in "Deez Nutz"
