First Time Guillotine/Chopped League - FAAB Questions (2 Viewers)

And there's the $404 winning bid for Barkley! :P I'm still figuring out strategy for this format, but if you look likely to be chopped guess it's literally go big or go home.

Surprised to see Maye go for so much (despite him playing great). I felt foolish a couple of weeks ago for winning him for $57 ... only to see no one else bid on him :frown:

My $404 bid for Barkley was directly inspired by @Gally 's post from last week. :lmao: Turns out the next highest bid was "just" $350, but, oh well. Could have gone a lot lower and still gotten McMillan and Lamb, but that's the way blind auctions go.
Nice. It would have mattered if you bid $354. If you look at the winning bids there are a few XX5, a few more XX1, a couple XX8, and a XX9. So it looks like your group may have their own versions. Track which teams use which ending number and you can use that to see where you need to go. Most people will fall back to the same pattern. You just gotta figure out what it is and adjust accordingly.

I'm guessing some of the premium guys on bye could be hitting the waiver wire this week. For my league, it's Bijan. If $550 was needed for Barley last, I dread to think what Bijan will go for. Though the team that won won't be bidding again (#2 high bid was $501). I'm bidding of course ... just have to think how much. For the third week in a row I finished with the second lowest score so I'm feeling very much on the chopping block. And I really need a top RB. I think Javonte Williams can be promoted to "end game" level, but my other RBs aren't there (Chuba, Etienne, Kamara, Swift). This started with only 12 teams so we're down to 7 (I have 80% FAAB left).

I'd be going after him like crazy especially if you're close to the chop

Bijan went for $506. Just couldn’t pull the trigger on a $500+ bid, and that may be a mistake with only 7 teams left (or 5 weeks of bidding). I do have the second most FAAB remaining (72%). But 4 other teams have at least $450, so I fear in the last 5 weeks people will just be throwing all their money at the top guy and if I want to upgrade I’ll have to spend at least that much (for a player not as good as Bijan). Oh well, I’m learning :-). It’s tough because most strategy suggestions are going off 18 team leagues.

I did get Jayden Daniels and Brock Bowers for $75 (combined). I’m hoping Daniels has the rust off and is healthy and I have an end game QB. And that with rest Brock can be end game level too.

Saquon Barkley is getting cut this week in my league. I'll bid on him for sure ... just not sure how much. The league has only had 2 bids over $300 (Achane and Jefferson) and none over $400.

We're down to 8 though. Things are getting tight and most teams have at least 50% of their FAAB left (I have 85%). My team took a huge hit this week losing Nabers, although I have Pickens to move from the bench to replace Nabers (he seems like he'll be huge at least until Lamb comes back, and even then he should be decent). But RB could be improved. I have a lot of RB2s (Kamara, Etienne, Chuba, Javonte) but no "end game" quality RB1.

Guess who's back on the block? Saquon 😀! Other notable names up for grabs will be: Gibbs, Chase Brown, Hurts, Scattebo, Deebo, Egbuka.

To be honest, despite advancing I feel like dead team walking (having just lost Puka, in addition to losing Nabers earlier in the season). Since we started with only 12 teams, there are only 5 more weeks of bidding left. So "end game" is coming up. I feel like I really need to get an impact player. I have the 2nd most FAAB remain (72%) but 3 other teams have at least 50% FAAB and they'll be putting in bids. In this league bidding started conservatively, but it's taken $500+ to get the top RB in the last 2 weeks.

I'm not sure how to play it though with 2 big RBs available. I still have the RBs I listed above (plus Rico Dowdle, who saved my *** ... but I can't count on him for 30 point games every week).

Anyone else posting here still alive?

I did end up bidding $510 for Gibbs and $410 for Saquon ... and lost out on both:frown:. Cam Scattebo was a much cheaper consolation prize ($65).

Well, on the bright side I'm now crushing the rest of the league for money (I have more than the next 3 teams combined). If I can survive, and despite the low projected point total I think I have at worst 50/50 odds of doing so, I can see a path to realistically win the entire league by picking up the top available player for next 3 weeks.

This is my 3rd year playing in a 12 team guillotine and it's a fun format. In our league weekly winners accumulate additional FAB to spend so not everyone has the same amount. What I see is generally the top guys will go for over 50% of FAB for the first few weeks till teams start to spend down their FAB. Powerful teams will generally sit out bidding the first few weeks. The important thing right now is to look at the bye schedule coming up the next 4 weeks and assess what holes you are going to have.

Our first team got cut last week and Jonathan Taylor, Josh Allen and Tyler Warren are on the market. I am going to bid a little over 50% of my FAB on Taylor as I think he is a top 5 player the rest of the the year and....there are only 5 top 5 players! I'll pass on Josh as there are lots of good QBs out there. Warren is enticing, but not sure there is enough differential at the TE position. I had Gadsden this past week and he scored 30!

In the other thread, you said you had $525. So yeah ... I'm good with a little more than 50%. The trouble with bidding more is that if you're playing to win, you want a whole team of top 5 guys eventually (or at the least 1st round quality). Although your league can gain FAAB ... how does that work? That would change conventional strategy.

In my own league if I could redo a move it would be going harder for JT when he hit the market early. I was listening to "conventional" strategy that said to never bid over $200, and that was a mistake. Although my biggest mistake is taking Nabers over CMC in the first round of the draft. Man, my outlook would be so different if I swapped those guys. Other "expert" strategy was to avoid high risk high reward guys in the early part of the draft, and that's CMC for sure. Of course, we're not psychic and who can predict these things.

I did survive (with the second lowest score, but it wasn't close). So it's final 5 (we only started with 12). I miscalculated the money a little in my post but I'm still in good shape (I have 2.5 times FAAB the next highest team). I'll need that advantage and some luck since injuries have my team looking like by far the weakest in the league, and I'm easily the favorite to get cut next.

The team that got eliminated this week spent even less money than me, so they're not bursting with talent. Top guys are: James Cook, Jeanty, Judkins, Lamar, Hurts, Dak, Laporta, Kittle, Odunze, Metcalf, Deebo, Flowers. When there are so few teams there's no shortage of mid-level guys. Jeanty's on bye next week, so I won't spend much (if anything) on him.

On my team (PPR scoring) I'm left with:

QB: Daniels (Q, and plays MNF), Maye
WR: Puka (bye), Nico (concussed), AJB, Pickens, Olave
RB: Javonte, Scattebo, Etienne, Rico, Chuba, Kamara
TE: Bowers (hopefully back in week 8), Kelce

Wouldn't be bad early season, but not up to snuff for final 5. But if I can survive this week, get Daniels, Puka, Bowers back + the best guy on the team that just got cut (thinking Cook) and the best guy on the next team to get cut, I could have a fighting chance.

in the weeks before cuts start, the top 3 highest scoring teams that week get 50 extra FAB and teams 4 - 6 get 25 extra. The bottom 6 get nothing. so if you draft well you have a distinct advantage coming into the guillotine weeks.

I got Cook, Lamar, and Jeanty. But I overbid by over $220 on Cook so feel really dumb. For the last few weeks multiple teams were throwing everything they had at the top RBs and I felt like I couldn't risk not getting Cook. Maybe they're reading my posts here and knew not to bother (since I bid $1 more than what the next highest team had in FAAB). Still extremely likely to be eliminated next anyway. But still have more FAAB than anyone else, with just 3 more auctions to go.

If anyone's still reading, I'd appreciate feedback/advice.

The good news ... despite being a heavy favorite to get cut, I survived (thanks James Cook and Drake Maye) and am in the final four! And I have the most FAAB.

The bad news: I lost Skattebo, the team close to me in FAAB eeked out survival thanks to Rice's late TD, and on paper I'm clearly the weakest remaining team.

Right now my team is (PPR scoring, start QB, 2 WRs, 2 RBs, TE, WR/RB/TE flex):

QB: Lamar, Maye
RB: Cook, Javonte, Jeanty, Dowdle
WR: Puka, Nico, AJB, Olave, Pickens, Flowers
TE: Bowers, Kelce

Top newly available players are: Bijan, ARSB, Kyren, London.

I have $338. Other teams have $258, $58, and $0.

Last week I went $1 over the highest amount remaining to guarantee getting Cook, and I wasted $220. What the team with $258 does is the big concern. They seem stacked for RB (CMC, Achane, Chase Brown) and WR (Jefferson, Rice, Egbuka, Odunze, BTJ).

I'd really like to get at least one of Bijan or ARSB. But do I spend most of my money to do it? If the $258 team stands pat, they'll be able to steamroll the last 2 auctions. Although if I can add Bijan and ARSB I'd look to have end game quality starters at every spot.

So right now I'm between:

A) $259 for Bijan, at least $59 for ARSB (with backup bid for London of $59 or less). That will leave me with either $79 (at most) or $20 if I get both. But team could be "final battle" ready.

B) Try to preserve at least $100 by not bidding max for Bijan. At least $59 for Bijan and ARSM (again with London as a cheaper backup). Take a chance on getting no one. But if that happened, the $258 team spent most of what they had. If that happened I'll probably be "on the block" (lowest projected team) but if I survive I'd be the one who could steamroll the next auction.

I think your biggest need is WR with the injuries you have to Puka, Nico, and AJB. You could be without them again this week. To me that makes ARSB a priority over Bijan.

Since you think the other guy is stacked at RB/WR do you think he will bid high? How has he been bidding thus far? I would try and factor that in. Maybe go with lower bids across the board and hope he overspends on one guy and you get two or three cheap guys and maintain your FAAB lead. More risk but possible more reward.

Obviously you have to move on to have a chance but what kind of players will be on the block next week assuming you survive? Is the guy with the money the #1 seed?

Tough decisions.

Thanks. Yeah I know ... there's no clear cut decision. And whichever way I go, it will probably be the wrong move😛.

The team with the money spent most of that on JJ and Achane ($300+ for each early in season). Looking at unsuccessful bids by them this month: $20 for Cook last week (I won with $289), $41 for Skattebo a couple of weeks ago (I won with $67), $83 for Gibbs a couple of weeks ago ($560 was winning bid), $264 for Bijan 3 weeks ago ($506 won).

I do notice that all the recent larger bids have been on RBs (not WRs), and he already showed he valued Bijan the most. I do see this team as being the strongest despite having having a close call this week. He could make a push for Bijan again.

There are only 4 teams left, so everyone is a powerhouse. Top players on the $58 FAAB team are Gibbs, Jacobs, Henry, Lamb, JSN, Kraft, Mahomes (monster team) and on the $0 team are J Taylor, Saquon, Jamar Chase, Bucky, Josh Allen, McBride (another monster team).

$264 for Bijan 3 weeks ago ($506 won).
Seems like he will go big on Bijan based on his history. I would roll the dice on that assumption and go after ARSB and London with decent but nominal bids on Bijan and Kyren (I would go fairly low here as I am not sure he is better than what you have).

Well, I ended up getting Bijan, ARSB, and London for about $210 combined. Crazy that Bijan went for $510 just a couple of weeks ago (and that team got cut). So now I'm #2 in FAAB ($120 to $240, $50, and $0 for other 3 teams). Only 2 auctions left. If the top team wants to guarantee getting the next 2 players over me he can. But I like the Bijan/ARSB combo as much as any pair I could get next week if I survive.

This is my first time doing guillotine, but I think I'm seeing how end game plays out. Every team is stacked. Every projection is huge (for next week, all projections are between 120 and 130). The loser will be the one who has the fluke bad game from a stud that you just can't predict (like what happened to the last eliminated team with Bijan and Ferguson). But with 3 weeks left, I think I have an end game quality lineup, with money to improve.

QB: Lamar, Maye
WR: Puka, ARSB, London, Nico, Flowers, AJ Brown
RB: Bijan, Cook, Javonte, Jeanty
TE: Bowers, Kelce

I had a chance to look at the bid history, and I finally came up with some clutch bids! I did $113 for Bijan. Second place was $112 😀 !I did $103 for ARSB and second was $67. I had a low ball for London at $3, and it beat out $2. Makes me feel better about earlier misfires on bidding: overbidding for Cook by $220, $50 for Daniels only to drop him 2 weeks later, $50 for Maye earlier in season only to see no one else even bid.

I think I'm spending more time thinking about what to do for this team than my other 3 combined. The auctioning combined with guillotine format which means great players every week. You have to weigh short term vs long term. And it's a bit like poker where you try to get reads on what other players will do. And of course the extra intensity of one bad week booting you from the league.

Well, I survived. Down to the final 3. Things get tough because of course the only team with more money than me also survived. FAAB remaining is $249, $118 (me), and $0.

Best available players are: JSN, Gibbs, Lamb (on bye next week), Jacobs, Henry, Adams, Mahomes, Ferguson.

Not really interested in Mahomes (have Lamar and Maye) or Ferguson (have Bowers). I don't think Henry is an improvement over my starters. Adams would just be a small bid to handcuff Puka. So that leaves JSN, Gibbs, Lamb, and Jacobs as upgrades.

The $249 team can guarantee JSN and Gibbs with $11 left over (which is what I would do if I were them). But they may try to get cute and leave me an opening to get one of them.

Looking ahead, the players I could get from the $0 team aren't as attractive. Their best players are Josh Allen, JTaylor (but he's on bye week 11), Jamar Chase, Saquon, McBride. Chase would be the biggest upgrade for me.

Any suggestions for my bidding play? I want to leave myself at least $4 for next week in case it's me and the $0 team for the title (and I can steamroll them in bidding). But the $249 team should advance. Low $100s for JSN and Gibbs to see if I could get one? ~$50 bids for Jacobs and Lamb, or maybe even lower (especially for Lamb since he's on bye). Lamb and Jacobs both have good title week matchups. Maybe low enough so I could have a shot at 2 players (1 from each pairing).

What are your two rosters (high dollar guy and you)? Does it make sense for him to go all out for Gibbs/JSN? It probably does based on what you say could be left over if the $0 team is eliminated. How has that guy bid thus far?

The key is to figure out the high dollar guy tendencies (position he favors, types of bids he has made, etc). Are there any patterns? At this point this all becomes game theory for bidding purposes. The players are almost irrelevant as all teams are stacked so you just gotta hope you don't have an early game injury or a complete dud from your guys.

My initial thought is to put your highest bid on JSN (I think he is by far the best of those listed) and hope that the guy tries to get cute. I would put a solidly low bid on Lamb and hope to squeak him on the roster. That leaves Gibbs and to put a solid bid while still leaving you the $4 you want left over of the other guy makes it through.

Since the $249 team has Rice on bye, I think he has to go big on JSN. He's been savvy with bidding, consistently putting solid but not huge bids on players. But he could use a WR, JSN is THE WR1 in the league, and he can bid $119 and still have more than me left over. Plus there's only 2 auctions left ... it's time to spend money. Although he can be cute with the bidding (almost got cut the last 2 weeks by not picking up anyone).

My team (we start QB, 2 WRs, 2 RBs, TE, W/R/T flex; PPR):
QB: Lamar, Maye
WR: Puka, ARSB, London, Nico, AJB (in IR spot ... I'll have to drop someone to activate him), Pickens, Flowers
RB: Bijan, Cook, Javonte, Jeanty
TE: Bowers, Kelce

$249 team:
QB: Hurts, Herbert, Indiana Jones
WR: Jefferson, Rice, Egbuka, Odunze, BTJ
RB: CMC, Achane, Kyren, Chase Brown
TE: Warren, Kittle

$0 team:
QB: Josh Allen
WR: Jamar Chase, Harrison Jr., McConkey, D Smith, Addison, Tet Mc, Pittman
RB: J Taylor, Saquon, Bucky (in IR ... will have to drop someone to activate), Swift
TE: McBride

Though you're right. I think the biggest strategic challenge is just getting to this point. When everyone is stacked it's all luck.

Is anyone still active in your guillotine league? I'm not intending to make this thread all about me, but no one else is posting. I do think it helps me to type out my thought process, even if no one responds. And I have to hope the $249 team isn't reading this. If you are ... save all your money and plan on going all in on J Taylor next week! 🤪

Based on that I think you put in a nominal bid on JSN just in case the guy doesn't go $119. Doesn't sound like the guy will go after Lamb so what is the min bid you think will get him? Does the guy with money put random bids out to keep people honest? If so, I would probably go with like $50 for Lamb and the rest on Gibbs and reserve like a couple bucks for JSN just in case.

Results are in. Not surprisingly, he did go $119 for JSN. I got Gibbs for $71 (outbidding his $67) and Lamb for $13 (no other bids).

I don't like that he now has more than triple my FAAB. I'm second guessing myself if I would've been better off passing on Gibbs and then be able to block him from getting the best players from the $0 team next week (Jamar Chase, Josh Allen, McBride). Because I'm pretty sure the $0 team is losing and that's what's going to happen.

Anyway, my team should be strong enough to at least have a shot.

QB: Lamar, Maye
WR: Puka, ARSB, Lamb, London, Nico, Pickens
RB: Bijan, Gibbs, Cook, Javonte, Jeanty
TE: Bowers

I think you did fine. It's a crapshoot now since everyone is stacked. Sometimes having too many good players causes weird lineup decisions so he may have issues because of that.

I had to do some reading back to see that your league is ending soon. The league I am commissioner of is just halfway done. Guys are still gong in the $300 range.

I'd like to throw in there that my league switched to Sleeper and it has been a godsend. Never going back to guillotineleagues.com.

Yeah, final three and my team is pretty much in "final battle" form.

If you go back, you can see even a couple of weeks ago guys were going for $500+. In fact, recently Gibbs went for $560 and Bijan for $508. Now both of those teams got cut and the players are on my team :-) . The general strategy really played out where $400+ bids were not good in the long term. The strong teams that are left were ones with lots of low-ball "keep them honest" bids, and tried to get through the early and mid points of the season with low cost pickups. And we were both in danger multiple times.

This league has been through Yahoo and I think it's been working well.

And ... even though prime time games have yet to be played, I'm officially out.

I really thought I was doing well and had a great chance to win. Not sure how, without being psychic, I could've done better. For this week I had QB and TE ranked in the top 2. All RBs and WRs were ranked in top 5. They just didn't perform well enough.

Chase - 14-165-1

Worth every penny
Not really. You have virtually no chance to win. The last last few weeks you'll be watching guys scoop up Henry, Barkley, ASB, etc for $2 and rolling out all Pro lineups against you.
And Henry amassed a whole 3 points this week? So what
And Chase scored 4.6 in week one. Was your championship this week?
My team has a chance to win as I drafted a good team to begin with
Better hope so because with zero FAAB left every team will continue to get better while yours will not in comparison.
Oh I totally get it. Who knows, I may regret it. It'll give me a lesson learned for next year. This is all new to me.
Survive Chase's bye week?

I need Jacobs to get me 12 points tonight, and I survive another week.
