For those of you who have only participated in redraft leagues, I gotta say that you should try a dynasty league this year. My good friend and I decided to share a team in an online league since we couldn't get any of our regular redraft league mates to join the startup dynasty and so far we're stoked.
The strategy is quite different when you're looking ahead beyond just this year. Here's a glimpse of our draft to give you an idea... (12 teams - 1QB, 1RB, 1RB/WR, 3WR, 1TE, 1K, 1 DEF - 1 PPR, 5pts all TDs, 1 pt per 10 ru/rc yds, 1 pt per 25 pass yds).
1.2 Steven Jackson - took the Ram over LT only b/c we're afraid LT's days on top are winding down. Redraft, no question we'd of taken LT.
2.6 Peyton Manning - 30 yr old stud RBs = yikes. 30 yr old stud QBs = prime time.
3.4 Chad Johnson - same for 30 yr old stud WRs. Chad just needs to shut up and start putting up on a more consistent basis.
4.7 Jon Stewart - We see this kid as a top 10 redraft selection next year and from there on out and were amazed to get him this late (DMAC went 2.5, which bummed us out as we were targeting him at 2.6).
Still not done with round four as this is a slow draft (each pick is allowed to take up to 12 hours) but I'll let you guys know were we go from here. One nice part of the slow draft style is that there have been a TON of trades during the draft as guys have time to field and make offers.
7/30 update -
So as the rounds progressed we noticed a couple trends that have thrown off our game. First, QBs are not coming off the board. Big Ben for example was the sixth QB drafted and was had in Rd 6. Derrick Anderson in Rd 7. Taking Manning early put us behind the curve.
Second, there was a major run on WRs. I'm sure this has to do with PPR, the ability to start up to four using the flex option and the big year for WRs last season. Luckily we landed Santana Moss late but otherwise we're hurting for next season.
5.12 Anthony Gonzalez - a bit of reach but he seemed to be going in Rd 6-7 and we had to have him given Manning on our roster and Harrison's age. We felt that the likes of Chambers, S. Moss, Ward, Driver were not worth losing out on Gonzo. And we hoped that one of those guys would be available a round and a half later with our next pick.
7.7 Santana Moss - we were stoked to land him here. The WR run continued and we watched in horror as guys lower on our board (L. Evans, S. Rice, Burleson, Berrien) than Moss came off before hand. We tried to move up several times unsuccessfully and breathed a huge sigh of relief when our pick finally came and he was still there. Moss has been very productive in the past and with the new offense and a healthy Jason Campbell we think he will be again.
7.12 James Hardy - another questionable call as we still needed a back up RB, but again similar to the Gonzo pick we have several RBs that we view evenly and we think one of them will be available at our next pick (9.7) where as Hardy would more than likely be gone by then. Kid reminds us of Colston because of his size and hands... We'll see if he can even come close to that. For all we know he could instead be Dwayne Jarrett. Time will tell.
Manning/Gonzo put us way behind the curve at WR for next season and we felt the need to risk the 7.12 on Hardy becoming a stand out in future seasons. It just seems like it's easy to find an avg WR but tough to find a stud and given our WR weakness we wanted a potential future stud. Dynasty reasoning at its finest (or worst, LOL).
We've got three picks out of the next ten so I'll come back with another update soon.
