Fitbit? (1 Viewer)

I just picked up the Garmin Vivosmart. Anybody else have this one?
This one was pretty cool too with some smart watch features but after a couple of days I returned it as I just don't like wearing a watch. Ended up just going with the clip-on FitBit One.

I've had the jawbone Up3 for about a week and a half now. It's comfortable and the battery lasts a long time. The step calculator seems pretty good and the sleep review thing is pretty cool. However, it does not use the bodymedia multi-sensor calorie counting approach. The stupid thing uses the same algorithms based on height, weight, age that everyone else does. Also, the heart rate measurement is only your average resting heart rate/day + your heart rate when sleeping. Seems kind of stupid. There is talk of opening up continuous monitoring at some point in the future but I'm more interested in changing the calorie count method. it's find for day to day stuff, but when you're busting your ### doing non-exercise work like gardening, snow shoveling, etc, it's no where near as accurate as the bugg.

I think I'm going to be keeping since I already have the bugg and I have hope for this thing for the future.

this is disappointing

well ####

now what

I've been wearing my charge in the shower and in the pool with the kids and so far I've had no issues.

just read this

All Fitbit trackers are water-resistant, which means they are rain-proof and splash-proof and can stand up to even the sweatiest workout.

Do not swim with your tracker. We also don't recommend showering with your tracker; though the water won't hurt the device, wearing it 24/7 does not give your skin a chance to breathe. Whenever you get your tracker wet, dry it thoroughly before putting it back on.

Fitbit Surge is water resistant to 5 ATM, or 50 meters, and Fitbit Charge HR is water resistant to 1 ATM, or 10 meters. This means the trackers can be submerged and will still work when removed from the water. However, this does not mean the trackers can withstand the force associated with swimming strokes, so as mentioned previously we don't recommend swimming with the trackers.
well.. I just found out that wearing it in the pool isn't a great idea.. :hot:

not because it got water-logged or anything.. mostly because the strap must have come loose while I was tossing the kids around the pool for an hour and now it's lost..

apparently I have the heart of a 27 year old. On my run this morning, my HR peaked at 193. I'm actually 40, so my max HR is supposed to be 180. I had about 10 minutes straight with my HR above 180 (almost 4 mile run ending with a fairly long hill).

are you in the 10k thread? That is actually pretty bad for you to be that high for that long. You are not getting an efficient work out

Nope. I'm not running with any ambitions towards 5k or 10k - not any time soon anyways. I run to supplement other athletic endeavours. This was a 3.8 mile track with 274 feet of elevation gain, average pace of 8:56.

I don't know why it was that high - I seemed to be pushing the pace more than previous workouts - I was at about a 9 minute mile pace for most of my run, I generally at around 9:30 or 10:00. Everything seemed tight today as well - just generally didn't feel smooth. Also, my turf toe was acting up...nearly quit from toe pains but I pushed through.

Looking back at other workouts, it's hit or miss. sometimes on that stretch, I push it up to over 175, sometimes it stays under 170.

17k and counting today for Fiddles. Way to make us look bad.
he's a steppin machine
What's the low step count (scared to accept invite)
12,159 is low for the week
Low for a day or for the week?
For the week. Come on in cupcake, the water's fine.
:lmao: Not wearing it today, will come in tomorrow.

Like much of my life, being in the High Steppers Fitbit challenge has shown me to be decidedly middle of the pack once again.

Did a little experiment today bc my wife said my steps were BS

Wore my charge HR and her flex all day.

I hit my 10,000 steps on my HR 900 steps before I hit it on her flex.

Any suggestions on how to calibrate. They should be even, no?

the flex has a "dominant hand" setting... maybe confirm that setting then retest?

OK, my charge is on the dominant hand setting. Will check her flex and report back

ETA: mine went opposite though

When I had it on my left hand setting, I was getting too many steps. I changed it to dominant and seemed to be more accurate. If hers is not dominant, it should have gotten to 10,000 sooner I think

Do you have your profile height in the app correct? Not sure if that affects how it counts steps. Maybe that only comes into play in converting steps to miles. I counted the steps around the parking lot at work and compared to my One and it was very close.

Question for those who link with MyFitnessPal.

Yesterday, I burned 2700 calories per fitbit, which is more than the 2150 than "regular", so that should be a +550 allowance, right? But MFP only gave me 42 extra. I'm sure I'm missing something, but what's the point of syncing them up if they're not going to "talk"

:blackdot:

Getting a fitbit next week for my bday from the inlaws. My wife already has one. I'll be up for the group once I get it going. I not skeered.

FitBit went crazy the other day and gave me like 25 extra floors climbed. I guess the weather and changes in barometric pressure can mess with it.

Friday is upon us once again :ninja:
I mentioned this on the challenge chat but I've been seeing a personal trainer twice a week and most of that is lifting, plyometrics, etc. I just dont have the energy for those 15k steps those days :kicksrock:

Someday I'll catch you and Acer sleeping though

All good. Been pushing it a lot lately as most of my steps tend to be on weekends every week. This has been interesting so far. Everyone keep up the good work

Wife bought me this for my birthday. It doesn't do quite everything I wanted but I really like it so far. She got it discounted and had a gift card so was like 50-60 bucks I think so I figured it would be ok to start with and if I want to ramp up to something more serious I would wait for you others to provide information on some of the newer devices. The big things I wanted was to replace the steps I was getting with my FitBit but add HR. Obviously GPS is something I'd love to have but for the price I'm happy enough - basically just replaced the old FitBit I had.
let me know how you like it for swim tracking, if you get any use in for that. I know I still owe a report on the 910xt for swimming but I've been slacking.
I've had it long enough now to give a good update:

Swim usage update - it treats your strokes as steps - I haven't noticed that the mileage is accurate and I doubt it is. And you can't wear your HR monitor - well, you could but it won't pick it up under water so what's the point?

Overall update:

Pros:

  • Comfortable - not too heavy and I find that I don't notice it most of the time
  • Waterproof - I never take it off - shower with it, swim with it. Get in the lake. Good up to like 30m I think so it's no concern
  • Steps - my company uses a corporate health system where you get money back by earning pts - one of the biggest ways to do that is steps. I can earn up to $400 so this thing will pay for itself 5 times over. The steps actually seem more accurate than the Fitbit I was wearing - it was overstating registering steps when it shouldn't. This seems very solid on steps and mileage.
  • Goal Steps - this is pretty nice - it gives you a daily goal and shows you how much you have left (or how much you've gone over) and it changes that goal based on your daily steps - as you walk more it increases your goal. You can change it manually too I believe.
  • Heart Rate Monitor - this was the main reason I had it - not so much to track accurate calorie burning but to see how much I'm pushing myself during exercise (mainly running).
  • Watch - I've never been one to wear a watch - I have in the past so I don't have to pull my phone out every time I want to see what time it is but it's always been more annoying than anything else so I would go long periods of time without wearing one and at times I would miss it. When I'm not working out I can just put it in clock mode and WALA, a watch - side benefit that I hadn't really concerned myself with when I got it
  • Charging - this is a big one - you don't have to charge it. It runs on a battery that has to be replaced like once a year (or so they say) - I'll try to remember to update this once I have to actually replace it but it's been REALLY nice not having to remember to charge it once a week
Cons:

  • No back-light - you are basically f'd if you want to look at this in the dark. Not a huge deal as that's typically at night in bed and I have my alarm clock to see the time. There have been a couple of occasions where I wanted to double check my steps to see if i was close to a bonus of 10k and that was annoying but the tradeoff is not having to charge it more frequently I would assume and I'm fine with that tradeoff
  • Website tracker - I expected this to be better and maybe I'm still learning but it's cumbersome at best to track stuff. The only way to get an activity to start is to manually start the HR monitor and if it stops (we'll get to this) then the activity stops and you don't know it - I'm going to keep at it but I felt this should be easier
  • HR Monitor - I bought it for this and it does work well MOST of the time - on occasion though I've had it stop tracking for some unknown reason.
  • Display - I mentioned the back-lighting but I can live with that - one that is a little more annoying is the display going long ways versus up and down. Aesthetically this makes sense but it's a little awkward to read it - some folks where it facing away (this was recommended on one of the reviews I read) but I find that to be really awkward - you basically have to point your hand/fist toward your chest and stick your elbow out. I don't get that. I'd rather kind of extend my arm if I'm having trouble with it. Most of the time it's at an ok angle to just look down at it and I'm guessing it varies based on height and arm length - YMMV
  • Swimming - already mentioned it but I was hoping for more here
  • Stop-watch - it doesn't have one (so no start/stop, lap, etc.) - very disappointed in this - VERY
Conclusion - it's not bad - definite step up from what I was using - I'd like more but for the price we got it at I'm not complaining. I think I will keep using it while I try to lose weight and get in better shape, then if I keep it up I'll treat myself to something even nicer once they work out the kinks and add features. I'd love some cross between an iphone and these fitness trackers and if it did all the things I want (GPS, music, HR, stop-watch, etc..) I'd shell out 300-400 for it most likely.

TL;DR - don't buy this for swimming

I may need to wear the Fitbit with the Garmin and enter this - the last challenge I did I think I did 169k steps in a week. :bowtie:

Please add me for the workweek challenge next week. I've been turrible lately but should get a few extra steps next week on vacation in DC seeing the sites.

I'm out for challenges for a while. My turf-toe is acting up again; I'm actually trying to limit my steps these days.

I don't have the Fitbit (Up3 for me) but does anyone else have their's set to vibrate when your inactive for a certain period? Mine's set for 30 minutes and I'm like Pavlov's dog when that thing starts to vibrate.
