Fitzgerald as a "Flex Starter" (1 Viewer)

In the game recap for the ARI/MIN game this week, the Fitz section ends with the line "Until the Cardinals figure out how to get Fitz more involved, he is nothing more than a flex starter." I don't get this at all. In PPR leagues he is the 10th WR overall averaging 16 ppg. Sure he was below average this week but that is due to double coverage and good pressure on Kolb. He also has two games over 100 yards this year. Can some staff member explain this to me?

You might want to PM or email Bloom. He has a staff that works with him on the game recaps. Did you read the SF/TB game recap?

I don't want to pile on but I think Fitz is clearly an every week WR1 however Kolb's progress is disturbing and it would seem to be holding Fitz back a little.

I used to write recaps back in the day, and the staff STRONGLY urged us to only provide factual information from a recap standpoint, and leave out the opinions. Keep in mind that this is one persons opinion more than likely. Maybe it slipped past the editing room.

There's an editing room?

obviously that's an exaggeration, but he has been a disappointment thus far.

from what I can tell, he's in the WR13 to WR19 range in average points/game in most standard scoring systems. Unless you're starting just 1 WR each week, he looks better than a flex option to me.

he's really not doing any better or worse than guys like Roddy White, Vincent Jackson, and Hakeem Nicks are.

I noticed the "flex" comment as well. Fitz is WR13 in my non-PPR league.

I also noticed that Steve Johnson was called a "match-up WR2" in the upgrades/downgrades. Clearly I'm doing something wrong in how I select my starting WRs.

Fitz took a hit once Kolb became his QB, Kolb is not good and never will be. As long as he is in Arizona Fitz will perform just like this and last year.

This is a bit strong. Fitz hasn't been under 62 yards this year and has 2 TD's and 2 games over 100 yards. They get the bye now to work on things. Yes they have Pitt and Balt for their next 2 games but I could see them turning it around. Kolb has looked bad but I don't think he's this bad.

Fitzgerald is better than a "flex starter" with me at QB. They've had a couple tough road games, and 3 of their first 5 have been on the road. Let's see if Arizona can straighten it out after the bye.

He's had 2 big games and 3 mediocre games. I'm not concerned.

A little?I'm fondly remembering the John Skelton era at this point. Kolb stinks.
This was really the thrust of the comment. Fitz is super talented but the Vikings made him a total non-factor in this game because Kolb wasn't able to get him the ball... Look at the targets for Doucet, Housler and King - there were 16, 8 and 6. When 30 of your 42 attempts are check downs, how can you count on Fitz from a fantasy prospective week to week?

To be fair, the Fitz comment about being a flex guy was a little harsh. However, the Vikings are a team that was giving up 280 yards per game through the air before this weekend. Seeing Kolb check down for 2/3 of the game made you feel like Fitz is not a guy you can count on week to week...

Stafford lobs it up for Calvin even if he's triple-covered. Why doesn't Kolb have that same trust in Fitz?

He did once in the game... on 4th down. Fitz had three guys hanging all over him and he still got his hands on the ball....

My thoughts exactly.... though we all were expecting more last week vs. a MIN team that couldn't keep Bowe or Megatron in check. Though if Fitz makes that spectacular catch in the end zone (the one he got his hands on with defenders hanging from him) his stat line is totally different and this thread likely doesn't exist.

does it really matter? he scores the same whether he is started as a flex or a WR, I tend to use a 3rd RB as my flex, just see it as an opportunity to go more heavy at either position generally, but it's not like a flex player scores differently because he is in the flex spot, a starter is a starter either way.

Kolb dont have the arm Stafford does, or the chemistry with Fitz that Stafford has with Calvin, after working together longer and also creating trust...plus lobbing the ball up thee is harder than it looks.

"Week 5 at MIN - The Vikings double teamed Fitzgerald all day. Between that and the constant pressure on Kevin Kolb, Fitzgerald was almost a non-factor in this game. His best reception was on the opening drive of the third quarter. Deep in Minnesota territory, Kolb was under intense pressure. As he was about to go down, he threw up a prayer in the direction of Fitz who went up with two defenders on him and still managed to come down with the ball. It was a 22 yard reception that set up the TD run by Wells on the next play. In the 4th, Kolb looked to Fitz on two 4th and long situations. On the first, Fitz broke toward the sideline and Kolb hit him right on the numbers for a nice 21 yard gain. The second was a crazy 4th and 22 where Fitz just sprinted to the end zone and Kolb forced the ball into quadruple coverage. Somehow Fitz managed to get his hands on the ball, but couldn't hang on and the Cardinals turned the ball over on downs. Until the Cardinals figure out how to get Fitz more involved, he is nothing more than a flex starter."

Bryant, Dodds, Bloom, FBG team I always look forward to game summaries. But you guys need to have a chat with whoever is writing these. Fitzgerald is NOT a flex starter. And your FBG forward ranking still has him as a WR1.
