In Cali, there's no reason to eat at Five Guys. The rest of us don't have In N Out though.

There's an Apple-like cult around In N Out that I just dont understand. The burger is nice for fast food, but hardly something to crave. And the fries are ok if you hate the taste of potato. Plus, there's that whole snobby off-the-menu menu BS. Yet somehow it inspires rabid devotion.

I don't get the love for In N Out it's really nothing special. I have had better burger's at Carls Jr when on the WC.

This is crazy talk. Like saying a Whopper is better than a Five Guys burger.

Yes it does sound crazy when you put it that way but I truly don't see the fascination with In N Out and agree with dparker's anology. People from the WC just put it up there on a pedastal "OMG you haven't been to an In N Out, well then you are missing the best burger IN THE WORLD" (Iverson voice over) or act shocked if you don't like it. I tried it and was highly disappointed, it's just not that good in my opinion.

I've never heard it called the best in the world, it's just much, much better than other fast food burgers with a comparable price. The quality and freshness of ingredients is far superior than you'd fine at the usual fast food joints. Sure, not everybody is going to love everything and some people have different palates. I've got a buddy out here who hates the Father's Office burger which by most accounts is the crown jewel of LA burgers. You can't please everybody.

All fries need to be eaten piping hot once they absorb a little moisture it's all downhill. The trick to In-N-Out fries is to order them well done. That guarantees you get them fresh out of the oil. No sitting around.

For me, the trick is animal style. I can't tell you what I have against In-N-Out fries.... I just don't like them much by themselves.

I love it because they use top notch ingredients and make a great burger for a very low price. And perhaps I am speaking just for myself on this one but I also believe they have the best customer service training program in the business. Without question the most consistently friendly staff of any fast food joint I have ever been to. Which I very much appreciate. I hate going to places where the customer service people act like it's my fault that they made poor career choices.

The places that I think you could get a better burger are places that you would be silly to order a burger at. For large scale chain burgers- they are the standard. Are they the best burger in the world? Maybe, maybe not. But they are the best, IMO, at what they are and what they do. It seems to me that Five Guys has used them as their template.

Same tier. Been to In-N-Out a bazillion times, always had good to great customer service. Never a problem. Been to Chick Fil-A a handful of times and have received the same level of customer service of either good to great. Interestingly, both are Christian owned businesses that use those values to treat their employees very well. Amazing what you get when you invest in your employees.

The fries are excellent if they are right out of the grease. Once you throw them in a sack for a few minutes and they get all steamy, they get limp, mushy and aren't very good anymore.Had a burger called "The Farm" last week in a local place in Naples that had pulled pork, cheese, a fried egg and bacon on an all-beef patty. It was scrum-dilly-icious.

Fatburger is inferior compared to In-N-Out and Five Guys and the expense of it means I have no real desire to ever go. Then again, if there was no In-N-Out or Five Guys around, maybe I would go to Fatburger once in a while.

Fatburger is much better than Five Guys. I prefer In-N-Out, but know many that like Fatburger better. But, it's more expensive than In-N-Out.

Why do you feel it is inferior? I can't vouch for it's freshness, but it's a big juicy burger that isn't squished like a double-double.

Fatburger's better than the standard fast food fare because they actually cook a fresh patty for you when you order it. Other than that i don't love the place. Every one I've even been to is always dirty, especially the behind the counter where they're cooking. The flat top at that place always looks nasty. I haven't been in years though, maybe it got better.

I think Fatburger is way over rated. If given the choice of a free burger from there or Carl's, I would pick Carl's.

I am going to try like heck to make it to the Sepulveda In N Out before 1am... but I don't think that will happen. :( Gonna try the well done fries but certainly will have them animal style. I don't like to mess with the hamburger- just give to it me with the grilled onions.... yum.

But as far as thin-pattied burgers goes, those two are the best I've ever had. I think I'll try a 3X3 in a few weeks when I return to Dallas for work.

The fries were decidedly average. I had them "animal style", and well done. I then ate some of my buddies (only hate half of mine), just in case the extra stuff wasn't that good. Yeah they were fresh, but they just weren't that good. Give me Five Guys cajun fries any day of the week.

Overall, both are equally good.

And I spent 11 bucks and can't believe how much of this thread has been wasted on people arguing over a few dollars. Geez, guys, who cares. Unless you want to die, you don't need to be eating at any of these places more than once a month anyway. If you can't afford an extra couple bucks for Five Guys every month or two, then go enjoy your wendy's.

Basically how I feel, but I like In N Out quite a bit more. You can't go wrong with either.

I have both right by my work and Five Guys has grown on me. Like Shader said, they make a good rotation.

From my notebook:

- I don't care for InNOuts shakes, they aren't cold enough for me. Always seem half melted.

- Five Guys Cajun fries are so good until you've had about ten of them, then they start to overpower your taste buds.

- In terms of popularity, In N Out is always SLAMMED with lines coming out the drive thru and front door. Five Guys is barely moderate with traffic.

- Love all the black menu toppings that come with the Five Guys burger. Mushrooms. Mmmmm.
