Flacco’s agent targets top-five money (1 Viewer)

Though many Ravens fans have expressed relief over the fact that the team and quarterback Joe Flacco will begin negotiations on a contract to replace the one that expires after the 2012 season, talking about Flacco’s value could lead to some sharp differences of opinion.

Flacco’s agent, Joe Linta, recently set a high bar.

“If the game is about wins and losses, he has to be in the top five [quarterbacks],” Linta told Matt Vensel of the Baltimore Sun. “He is a player who has been extremely durable, never missed a game. And he’s done something that no one has ever done. In his four years in the league, he has never missed a game and has more wins than any other quarterback.”

Talks will commence at next week’s Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Linta says it will be a “brief chat over coffee,” and not a “Hatfield and McCoy thing.”

Still, folks shouldn’t get their hopes up.

“We’re not going to have a press conference next Saturday to announce his extension,” Linta said. “In order to do Joe Flacco’s contract extension, we have to start somewhere. And that’s sitting down and chatting, and that’s what we’re doing.”

We’ve got a feeling that it will be many Saturdays before an extension is announced, especially if Flacco wants to be paid among the top five quarterbacks in the game. We like him and we believe he’s underrated and overcriticized, but to put him with guys like Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, and Ben Roethlisberger seems to be a little premature and/or presumptuous.

I just traded away Flacco for Freeman in Dynasty cause Flacco worries me sometimes. Some games he looks great others he is just average at best. Too inconsistant for my liking.

The problem that Flacco's agent needs to realize. Is the Raven managment is going to look at games like the one vs the Jets this year. I Think it was on SNF or MNF. Where Flacco did virtually nothing to help them win that game. It was all the Ravens defense all day. So Flacco's agent can tout all he want how many wins Flacco has. But not all of those wins had anything at all to do with Flacco. Some games were won virtually by Ray Rice and the Ravens defense.

So I like Flacco and all as a top 15 QB. But top 5 QB money seems a little out there.

:)

Exactly. One of the "stats" that experts spout off about that bug the crap out of me: Quarterback X has won X many games or X number of Super Bowls. Well, no. Quarterback X was part of the team that won X many games or X number of Super Bowls. Sure, he's a big part of the team, but the "stat" always make it seem like Quarterback X did it all by himself. Ridiculous.

Coach: "Joe, don't blow this. Just go out there and hand the ball to Ray. Just to keep them honest, we'll throw it to Ray out of the backfield. And every once in a while we'll have you throw it, to the sideline or really really deep--if our guys can't catch it REALLY HIGH or REALLY DEEP, nobody else will either." If this doesn't get us down field...we'll have to punt. Our Defense is pretty much the BEST overall unit IN THE LEAGUE (for now---age is catching up though), so lets trust them and not take ANY unnecessary risks UNLESS it comes down to the very end of the game and we'll cross our fingers."

Joe: Ok, coach.

If this were a book it would be called..Cherry-Picking: Not Just for Message Boards Anymore

That dude is on crack. If a miracle happens and Peyton Manning finds himself on this team, they are instantly in the Super Bowl every year until the defense falls apart or he retires.

What's next? BJGE's agent asks for top 5 RB money because no other featured back has won as many games in the last two years?

An agent doing what an agent is supposed to do, so what?

If he has Flacco hold out for that kind of money, then we'll have something to talk about.

TOP TEN QB BASED ON APY (Signing Bonus in millions)

1-Tom Brady $18 mill ($16)

2-Peyton Manning $18 mill ($20)

3-Mike Vick $16.667 mill ($7)

4-Eli Manning $16.25 mill ($13)

5-Philip Rivers $15.3 mill ($19.55)

6-Jay Cutler $14.67 mill ($7)

7-Ben Roethlisberger $14.66 mill ($5.6)

8-Sam Bradford $13 mill (nearly $18 in roster bonus)

9-Aaron Rodgers $12.74 mill (nearly $7.5 in roster bonus)

10-Kevin Kolb $12.42 mill ($10)

This. The agent doesn't believe Flacco is going to get top 5 money. He doesn't believe he's worth top 5 money. He's just doing his job and trying to set the bar high so they can be seen to make concessions in the negotiations as they drop down to a realistic price.

Nazi soldiers were just "doing their job" too. That's never an excuse.

Agreed. He's starting high and they will meet in the middle. No one involved with that situation, including Flacco and his agent, think he is going to sign for top 5 money.

good information!I'd take Flacco ahead of Vick, Cutler, Bradford, Kolb...Flacco is durable, unlike Vick..and he's just as good as Cutler, if not better. and he is light years ahead of Bradford and Kolb.Wikipedia: "By starting in two playoff games in 2009, Flacco earned the record for most starts by a quarterback in the first two seasons in NFL history (37).[1] Flacco became just the fourth quarterback to bring his team to the playoffs in his first three seasons, and is the first to win a game in each."sometimes his coaching staff doesn't need for him to win games, he's more of a clock manager, hand the ball to Ray Rice and let him do his thing, so blame Cam Cameron for that. the Ravens offense isn't always 'full throttle all the time'..pay the guy top money.he's worth it.

Predicition:

Flacco delays negotations because he wants to be overpaid. This gives Peyton time to get better and become a FA. Ravens sign Peyton and win the Superbowl. Flacco becomes a FA and gets a fraction of wha the could have gotten by getting a long-term deal now.

Nope. He knows what he's worth. This is posturing by his agent.

People use that term pretty often, and they have no idea what they are talking about. So I guess if I were you I wouldn't be upset about it.

Top-5 money is such a misnomer. There are so many ways to break down top-5 money (per year, total contract, guaranteed) that there are at least three different top-5 lists. Also, contracts get reworked fairly frequently, so numbers tend to increase per year.

The number 1 question to me is where Flacco will show up compared to Fitzpatrick. If Flacco got a 6 year, 60 million deal with 25 million guaranteed, would that be a decent deal for the Ravens?
