flying into Myrtle Beach next week. cuz the price was right Any opinions on what city to stay in - not set on staying in Myrtle and willing to drive a couple hours up/down coast.

Looking for good food, good fun.

And if you got a suggestion on a great hotel with a great pool, please share.

You’re basically looking at Wilmington to Charleston.

If you’re looking to stay in one place, Wilmington probably has the greatest variety of stuff. If you’re looking for a really nice place, Charleston is the best bet. If you don’t mind driving day to day, then I would probably pick north Myrtle beach, because you can get up to the beaches south of Wilmington pretty easy, several of which are pretty chill. Not sure about hotels, but my guess is that Myrtle would be the best bet for that, though Charleston probably has some high end places. Not all that much in between any of those places that I find particularly exciting, but maybe I am forgetting something.

If you aren't playing golf or laying out on the beach, Myrtle is kinda janky. I like it, but it's redneck and mostly golf and fat people in lazy rivers and on go-carts. It's grown. But that's still the gist of it. Whenever I leave there I feel like the fittest man on earth.

The right play is driving to Charleston for a couple of nights. Stay in downtown. Hit Halls Chophouse, my favorite steakhouse. Isle of Palms/Sullivans Island for a day trip (Obstinate Daughter is decent food, but mostly families). The aircraft carrier is cool. Shem Creek area has some decent outdoor dining to have drinks at, like Reds Ice House. Anything you do in Charleston is >>> Myrtle Beach

Not sure about pools at hotels. We've stayed at Wild Dunes on IOP. If I remember, it had a nice pool.

Wild Dunes is a great option with pools because there really are not a lot of hotels on the Charleston beaches. The ones that exist do not have big pool areas.

Tons of hotels with pools along the Grand Strand. Something like North Myrtle may be more chill.

Myrtle doesn't really bother me because my beach trips are mostly spent on the beach itself or in the pools. I find the beaches themselves much nicer than the Charleston islands. Good restaurants if you avoid the tourist traps. I kinda think it is underrated at this point, but I get the criticism. New York Prime is one of my favorite steakhouses. Probably not Hall's level, but not far off.

And get the duck club sandwich at the Tatooed Moose!

Yeah, if beach is a priority, I would not choose Charleston.

I do like Bimini's in North Myrtle Beach if you go there. Totally local dive hangout. Definitely not a tourist trap. And Southern Sunrise for breakfast. The owners of it also own Kings Pizza across the street. Which if nothing else is a MB institution.

Plan is aug 7 to 11. Should I be changing plans based on the storm forecast? How often are these storm paths wrong?

Even if the path is wrong, there will still be lots of rain. If it was me i would be rescheduling.

Myrtle beach traffic can be terrible during a flood and the side streets flood a ton even when there is not a tropical storm heading anywhere in the vicinity.

My grandparents owned a home there when i was a kid and even as an adult it is where we always went back to vacation. I have seen some good rain events that have flooded rental houses that we have stayed at. I would not go back during a storm.

Side note FWIW: I've never in my life heard of anyone flying into Myrtle Beach.

The availability of flights isn’t always convenient, but super easy airport to get in and out of and low prices typically. I can fly round trip from Wilmington, DE to MB for $100-150 a person.

Best flight I’ve ever been on was actually from Allentown, PA to Myrtle years ago. Leather seats, plenty of leg room, full meal, in flight trivia with prizes, for less than $100/person. The airline? Hooters airline with in-flight Hooters girls. True story.

Depending on where you end up staying, I really liked Parson’s Table in Little River (just north of North Myrtle). Steak and seafood place with great ambiance.

If you get up into North Carolina, there’s a small place called Sugar Shack in Ocean Isle that has amazing Caribbean food. Can be tough to get into though. Calabash Creamery isn’t that far away and has fantastic ice cream, though again, lines can be out the door.

If you’re looking for a really chill beach to hang out on, Sunset Beach, NC is really low key. Parking can be a bit tough, but you can find wide open spots to setup on and enjoy with the hordes of people.

Agree that sunset beach is one of the better low key spots in the area

Wife has some family in Myrtle Beach so we're planning on going there at some point next year. What are some great events that take place there or near there during the year? We have flexibility on when we can go, but we're in MN so it would be nice to go during our winter. Events in Jan-April would be great but we're open to anything. May as well go down there when something sweet is going on.

Suggestion here would be to check out if any shows are coming to the Hard Rock or Carolina Opry that you are interested in. Also, April water should be warm enough to get in at least a little bit.
