Football games that can be referred to by one word or phrase. (1 Viewer)

A big thank you to Utter Chaos (threadstarter) and the others who have specified the teams and date of the game so that the readers know exactly which game is being referenced.

The Freezer Bowl

The Catch

The Ice Bowl

The Hail Mary

The Drive

Bottlegate

The Helmet Catch
There have been a few of these I'd imagine. Which are you referring to?
Its probably the Drew Pearson 50 yard touchdown play vs the Vikings at the Met during a playoff game in the mid 70's. Vikings fans old enough to remember are probably still burned that no offensive interference was called on the play. Admittedly when I think of a "Hail Mary" game though, I think of the 2 college classics - the Doug Flutie Hail Mary vs the Canes and the Kordell Stewart to Michael Westbrook play vs Michigan.
Yes, the Cowboys/Vikings.LINK

"The Game"

I think of this game as something that is either heart wrenching or heart warming depending on what side you are on. This game had it all. There were something like 8 lead changes and going into the final quarter one team finally pulled away a bit, going up by 10, and maintained the lead. It was a great game.
I don't think any game can justifiably be nicknamed "The Game."
It was the game above all games. I have a difficult time not believing that you have no idea what game I mean. Everyone knows what game I am talking about by just calling it "the Game". It is the best of all time.
There was a game in 2002 between the Bills and Vikings that included 9 lead changes and ended in OT. Many players had monster games. Bledsoe threw for almost 500 yards. Peerless price caught 185 yards and 2 TDs. Culpepper had a big game. Randy Moss caught 111 yards and 1 TD. Charlie Rogers had a 90 yard kickoff return. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxs...00209150min.htm

Body Bag Game

The Body Bag Game was a Monday Night Football game that was played on November 12, 1990 between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins at Veterans Stadium. During this game, eight Redskin players were injured. Its nickname comes from a comment by an Eagles player directed at a Redskins player, and reported in The Washington Post the next day," One player remembers hearing: 'Do you guys need any more body bags?

"The Sneakers Game" (December 9, 1934, Chicago Bears vs. New York Giants, NFL Championship game)[3]

The game was played at the Polo Grounds in frigid weather on a frozen field. At halftime, New York coach Steve Owen provided his team with basketball shoes for better traction. Gliding on the ice with the sneakers, the Giants scored 27 points in 10 minutes during the fourth quarter, and ended up beating the until-then undefeated Bears 30-13, winning the championship and denying the Bears their third straight championship (their second against the Giants) and the first undefeated and untied season in NFL history.

Nice. Probably 1st NFL game with a nickname distinction.

The Lawrence Taylor / Joe Theismann game

Does that have a nickname? How bout "The Snapped in Half Game"? I know, thats probably in poor taste.....

In the theme of Bears v Packers there are...

the magic man's illegal pass game "The Instant Replay Game"

payton blocks kick from heaven

the bodyslam

the birth of the fridge

the reaction to the fridge game

Of course, not all games with names but every fan in Illinois and Wisconsin remembers these games and more.

The Fog Bowl.

December 31, 1988 - playoff game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears. A heavy fog rolled over Chicago's Soldier Field during the 2nd quarter, cutting visibility to about 10-20 yards for the rest of the game.
