and quite a few have them going back-to-back 1st and 2nd round WRs, did you ever think about the fact that the 9ers have gone D heavy the last few years and done it well. Well the weak-link in their D was the D-line and they lost a very big piece of that in B.Young. Anybody concider having them draft a good 3-4 DE? On offense, their WRs are nothing spectacular (Lelie was a bomb and I couldn't understand why they went after him in the 1st place) but DJax is solid at worst and Battle has proven to be starter quality. They drafted Hill last year and have V.Davis and D.Walker at TE to round out a decent 4 or 5 recieving threat formation. The weakest link on the offense could very well be the O-line (who has turned the SF QB depth chart into a bad episode of M.A.S.H.) as A.Smith hasn't been able to stay healthy long enough to prove how bad he is. Now L.Allen - who could have been their best O-lineman - has indicated he'll retire and nobody has them drafting for that need. Now, without an O-line or a QB, how important is your WRs anyway? Sure, we'd all like to see SF pick out the next J.Rice/J.Taylor combo but it ain't gonna happen. Just 'cause we're used to seeing a red-and-gold passing attack leading the NFC West doesn't mean they are going to keep drafting WRs 'till they re-create the glory days.

Isn't Mike Martz in town now? The fact that they sold their soul to hire this guy would seem to indicate they're going to make improving the offense a priority, so DL is probably out. He won't want O-linemen because he apparently thinks blocking is overrated. He'll want new toys to send out into fancy patterns while his QB watches from his back on the turf.

No - I think Mike Martz has nothing to say about the team's draft pick. And I am willing to bet they address OL considering Frank Gore is the franchise and Smith is a #1 pick. Considering how late they draft in the first, an OG or WR is the most likely candidate unless a DL/LB slips through te cracks to them,.They have their natural 2nd round pick, right? I am willing to bet that OL is addressed with one of those two picks.

I agree with your line of thought, but for the bolded part.Jackson as solid at best IMO. At worst, he's a detriment.

They can get 3-4 DT help in the later rounds. That's a hard position to find a stud but a painfully easy position to find a decent, average-or-better-than-average contributor. Many 3-4 DTs are former 4-3 DEs who were too slow to play 4-3 DE in the pros and too small to play DT. Tweener DT's slip for some reason. Maybe it's that fewer teams need them as 3-4 DTs. It's like getting a good OG. Even if everyone needs one, the difference between "stud" and "decent starter" is so minimal in many cases that it makes sense to wait.

While I would agree that Martz has nothing to say about the pick, I would think bringing Martz in has something to say about the pick. With a bad offense, why bring in someone with a reputation as an offensive savant and not give him the personnel to improve the offense?
