For the remote work, WFH, folks - share your office items here (1 Viewer)

Ive been working from home (WFH) for 3 years now. I can now officially say I have Text Neck. I am in the market for a standing desk system as well as any other tools/utilities which can help with this.

I looked in previous threads and didnt really see any good WFH tools, utilities, gadgets, threads so I figure I would start one.

I will share a couple items I have been happy with, and a couple not impressed with. If you have standing desk systems you love (or hate), please share. Thanks!

What do you have you like, love, hate? Got any standing desk systems you would recommend?

While not really a WFH thing, Mrs and I have turned a section of the home into a sound studio of sorts with 2 Technics 1200 originals from Japan not the repops from China
Mixer, speakers, monitors and a lot of neighbor aggravator bass coming thru on 90s vinyl mostly House, Deep House and Electro/Breaks

We did this because we needed an escape at 5-6 o'clock when the day is winding down and we just need a break. Beats the crap out of nightly news
Releases a lot of tension

We bought an adjustable work bench that can go up or down to adjust for height, I'm a foot taller than my wife. Turntables and mixer sit nicely on this

And we put running lights all around it, bought more lights to throw into the corners and we basically have our own night club at home

We have really good chairs. I have what the Amish furniture store called a "client chair". It looks like it should be in a law firm. Mr R has a high quality office chair. Given how much time we spend here, they are essential.

He also has a deluxe monitor that is no longer available. It's a 42" ultra-wide by Samsung. He can move the windows he has open to just where he wants them. It is fabulous.

The Jabra speaker/microphone works great. I will link the basic one but it's also available in bluetooth.

Ive had this one, or one like it, for years and years. More recently i've been told the mic is sup-par. That and I prefer noise cancelling headphones currently.

On standing desk, I’ve had a Varidesk for about 5-6 years now and still working well for me. Just set it on top of your existing desk.

DId you cross shop with their complete desk systems at all?

I looked at these but my current desk would be too small. I would need to get a new desk and this which puts me in the realm of standing desk anyway.

I did not. I’ve got a big corner desk with shelves/cabinets/etc and did not want another piece of furniture. So, just looked at the converter at the time.

An electric standing desk will change your life.
I went with an iMovr Lander L-desk after reading some reviews. The motor and mechanicals are fantastic. Smooth, fast movement, pre-sets for sitting and standing. I wanted a solid walnut top, and it was cheaper to go a local sawmill and pay them to make me two desk-tops and install them onto the Lander frame myself. For ~800 I got a nice solid walnut top with charger cut-outs with much nicer wood and finish than I would've gotten from iMovr for their custom tops.

Also love:
  • Quor360 chair - I don't fully sit at all, so this is perfect for when I want to get a load off my feet.
  • Klipsich The Fives powered speakers - They have a ton of different inputs. I connected them to my docking station so they handle audio for my calls, as well as Spotify for when I want some music. Massive sound for bookshelf speakers.
  • My Dyson purifier/fan/heater - I have the smallest one that does heat (they may not make the same one). My office is the corner part of an addition, so it gets hot/cold depending on the season, so this fan lets me fine-tune the temperature. Zero noise, and has a timer so I can turn it on and forget about it.

I am in way too many meetings to sit there all day with headphones on, even the comfortable ones. I have had zero complaints about the mic.

I only WFH twice a week, I just sit at the dining room table
I would imagine that if you had a dedicated desk/office that a good chair would be a must

I did something similar: I purchased a butcher's wood block from Home Depot and attached that to the metal electric desk frames. The work was hard but it saved me hundreds compared to buying a wooden top from Uplift (or any standing desk company).

That's a great option. I've heard of some utilizing Ikea off-the-shelf tops as well. I do give the desk companies kudos for making their frames available without a top for those wanting to go that route. You can build some behemoth desk that move these days.

Sorel slippers
O R L Y?

Must have? Like worth it?
Black Friday pricing - I bought another pair today.
Just ordered, ty
Im not all that impressed. I prefer my 2 favorite sets of Keens. They are nice, dont get me wrong, but Im not sure a must have. Also notable they take a bit to break in as are very warm. Meaning, I need socks to go with them or my sweaty feet will be stinking it all up.

Warm foot pillows. I'll start breaking my new pair in on Dec 16th. They feel therapeutic for me the days after I play indoor soccer. Coffee, slippers, and my Excel spreadsheet is how I convince myself to get out of bed.

I could definelty see the extra heat - the new ones are so much fluffier than the beat down the old ones have taken.

Time for me to walk this back a bit

Its been freezing in Mass for the past month or so. I love my Sorel slippers. Now, they may not fit as well as the Keens, but they are super comfy in general and crazy warm. So if what you are looking for is a warm lounging slip, these are perfecto.

By far my favorite item is my KVM switch that allows me to use one set of keyboard/mice/monitors for my work and home computers. Makes playing games during meetings a breeze!
I'm glad this thread was bumped because I have a question about this. I have two monitors that I want to be able to switch back and forth between my work and personal laptops but I want to control each monitor separately. Sometimes I want them both on one laptop or the other but sometimes I want one on each. Do I need two KVM switches to make this work?

I used to have a KVM similar to the linked one, but after using it for a few years, I found that switching the video - between 3 PCs in my case - was more hassle than it was worth. I ended up switching to a simple and much cheaper USB switcher that only shares my keyboard and mouse between all of the PCs, then I just flip the source button on my ultrawide monitor to the correct input as needed.

This is exactly what my wife does for her setup. She's like Marauder who prefers to have that flexibility.
