The bears o-line was going to be a project this year if everyone was healthy. With the rookie having missed all of camp thus far and Metcalf looking to be out 4-5 weeks, the left side is going to be wide open all year. Plans are to move John St. Clair back to LT and to start a mix of Beekman and some other guys (that I have never even heard of) at LG. Basically, what was already looking to be a terrible offensive unit is now looking like an absolute nightmare. I wouldn't draft any bears offensive players this year.

 
I'm going tonight to the game and this unit is what I'm paying most attention too. I'll report back tomorrow any impressions or thoughts.

 
This is going to be freaking UGLY. I was trying to be positive about this season but if we are already essentially missing two starters on the line this might go down as one of the worst seasons in Bears history, which is saying A LOT. Man, I am going to be getting DRUNK on Sundays this fall. :lmao:

 
It's too bad because I really like Forte. I almost wish they would through Jones in there first and have him fail due mostly to the line so that Forte isn't ruined.

 
That is one of the things that I like most about this site. Posting about the status of offensive lines is very important in drafting RB.

While we are at it, Who can compare CAR's offensive line to the last two years? I dont see J.Stewart succeeding until they improve, but i dont doubt his ability. Jordyan Gross is a true keeper, i think they added a free agent.Then, PITT, can Roethlisberger get enough protection from this group, and OG Faneca is now a Jet.
 
I can't either, but trying to decipher the Bears FA moves lately has been about as easy as reading hyroglyphics.

 
I;ve got Forte 4 leagues now already. I hope this goes for worthless information! I just passed up Mendenhall for Forte right beofre reading this. I'll write it off as a useless thread. I hope! :boxing:

The organization that has had three first-day draft picks spend their entire rookie season on injured reserve over the last two season has had another serious injury.

First-round draft pick Chris Williams has had surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back. The plan is to keep him on the 53-man roster at this point, but when the offensive tackle will be able to return, no one can say.

The Bears are considering adding a veteran, including ex-Bear Fred Miller, and have already cleared a roster spot by placing running back Matt Lawrence on injured reserve.

The Bears are comparing the situation to what cornerback Charles Tillman underwent last season. Tillman had surgery following Super Bowl XLI to repair a herniated disc. That surgery happened in February and he was not cleared to fully return to drills until June.

If Williams follows a similar timetable, his chances of playing this season would have to be considered slim. Tillman is a cornerback. As a lineman, Williams is taking pounding on every play.

Williams was injured July 24 in the second practice of training camp, a non-contact drill. The team said it was a muscular issue but when that issue calmed down, they detected the disc issue. Team physician Mark Bowen and Dr. Srdjan Morkovic performed the surgery late Wednesday night.

Big mistake passing on Forte because of their OL, IMO. The difference in a below average OL & above average OL (individually) isn't nearly as much as most people believe. These are the best athletes in the world. With adequate coaching & a superior runner, the yards will pile up. They looked decent against KC. A good OL helps (like anything), but it doesn't make a FF RB. It's a combination of many things, with #1 being the talent of the RB.

Forte's biggest potential problem is the surrounding skill positions. If their QB can make some plays, if Hester/Bennett/Olsen can get involved, Forte will thrive. This kid is going to be a really good player. My pick for ROY.

Well, the OP is 100% right. Can't be argued. But After watching the first pre season game tonight I can't help but feel that Forte has a lot of PPR potential. He hauled in three passes and was targeted in another in basicaly one Qtr of play. I think that the coaches are going to try and get him the ball in space by throwing him the ball to help slow down any pressure on the QB.

Anyway - I'll be watching the rest of the bears pre season game to see if the trend continues.

Well color me unimpressed with last night's showing. I spent the first quarter wondering where the defense was? They couldn't make plays and get off the field. Our secondary looked slow, no pass rush, and our dline got pushed around.On the offense, I decided to only watch the front five. One word: slow. Tait looked like he couldn't get out of his stance quick enough. Beekman starting at RG, looked like a runt. Olin was Olin, good, but had to make up for the lack of other quality lineman. St.Clair is, well, a backup. Very disappointing. Forte is big and I didn't realize it. He's going to be solid in PPR leagues, because he will get dump offs. He ran well, but didn't have much real estate to run over. Lloyd and Davis started at WR, with Lloyd looking good and quick. It appears that a good portion of the offense will be run through Forte and Olsen. Olsen lined up as a fullback and had a nice block on a LB. Overall, this is an average team.Oh and Hester did not return any kickoffs last night. I wasn't sure if it's because it's preseason or if they are concerned about him returning a kick then playing offense. :shrug:

Forte impressed me last night. First two drives he was the offense other then a few attempts to WR'S.And he moved the chains despite not much space to work with unless Ortin tried to throw to others. And Double G I feel good about owning Forte in a lot of leagues. He might just be the bears entire offense for what that's worth. lolI might just own him 2 to 4 more leagues before the weeks out. Bottom line I'll be racking in the huge profits like every year comes end of year. Forte bust or not. 1 dude doesn't make a team. In most cases he's my RB-3 OR 4. (A flex with other good options )

Sorry but as someone who A) Is a huge bears fan and B) watches them very closely, I know that any success this year depends on the development of the line. I saw us as having a very slim, outside chance at a wildcard bid if the line developed and outperformed expectations. With Metcalf and Williams both guarunteed to miss significant amounts of time, this basically snuffed all my hopes for this season. I might be being overly pessimistic, but when the rest of the offense is as shaky and raw as it is, line play was the key to this season.

I agree that Forte looked solid last night. He hit the holes that were there, got the extra few yards after contact, and caught the ball well out of the backfield. He's got a good chance at being a very solid and consistent contributor. And he certainly will get the carries, with Jones on as more of an insurance policy I believe.But that o-line is a big concern. It will make the difference between 4.2 ypc and 3.2 ypc. The Bears were dead last in ypc as a team last year with 3.1 on the season. And with a real possibility that Williams will miss significant time, and maybe even the season, this line has not gotten any better. That doesn't bode well for Forte's ceiling.
 
I watched the game last night, as well.

I saw neither Orton or Grossman pressured, knocked down or sacked. This was a good sign, albeit against the Chiefs since the OL was basically a mixed stew of 2nd string guys and guys playing somewhat out of position.

I'm not happy with the Williams situation, but that's another story altogether.

As for Forte, I like what I saw and if you have him in a PPR league, he'll be a suitable #3 RB. This kid can do so much more than Benson it isn't even funny. He can run, catch and block. He'll probably be on the field for 3rd down situation because of the catching and blocking ability. So he could be a rare every down work horse back we all crave.

While agree that he has that capability of being an every-down back, I don't think the Bears will use him that way. At least not yet. They have a very capable and experienced 3rd down back in Peterson, who has always performed very well in that role, plus if they keep him on the active roster, they are going to want to throw Garrett Wolfe in on some 3rd down situations to utilize him in the passing game.Forte definitely has PPR value though, and he won't really have another back stealing a significant number of carries from him, but as far as being a workhorse, every-down back, I don't think the Bears will do that yet because they won't want to wear him down too quickly.
