Four Chicago-area teens were being held Wednesday after a shocking Facebook Live video showed what appeared to be the beating and torturing of a bound and gagged man with mental health challenges while his attackers yelled anti-white expletives.

Chicago police said they expect to file charges Thursday against the four 18-year-olds — two men and two women — who were not immediately identified.

Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson called the video a "brutal act" that was "broadcast for the entire world to see."

"It's sickening," Johnson said at a news conference Wednesday night. "It makes you wonder what would make individuals treat somebody like that. I've been a cop for 28 years and seen things that you shouldn't see in a lifetime, but it still amazes me that you see things that you shouldn't."

Sounds like they will be charged with hate crimes, kidnapping and potentially a few charges related to the victim being mentally challenged. It's absolutely disgusting, I hope the 4 of them are convicted and sit in prison for a good long while.

The first link, which has a video from the today show, includes the police commissioner(?) doing a song and dance about it not being a hate crime, but just "stupid".

No positive way to spin this, I think there's a serious chance there's an assassination attempt on Trump's life. Lots of angry, motivated people out there with the way the election played out, and I don't think this will be an isolated incident of people lashing out.

I live in Chicago and it's all over the news. They are being charged with hate crime(s) per multiple reports on the news last night and today. This poor kid knew one of the attackers. The victim lives an hour plus away from the city and met the one attacker he knew at a McDonalds. The 4 attackers stole a van and then kidnapped him, took him into the city and held him for 2 days. Then released him in shorts to walk around in some sketchy area.

yep.  everything I'm hearing is spinning this as the victim being targeted because of his special needs, not his race.

which is bull####, of course.

The original video mentioned the kidnappers texting the victim's parents during the attack. Are they talking about that locally?

Yep, which is why they are being charged with kidnapping as well, had they not done that kidnapping may not have been charged. Sounds like they are going to throw everything they can at them.

The people could be heard yelling "F--- Donald Trump!" and "F--- white people!" at various points throughout the 30-minute video.
I'm sorry, how do you pass the red face test as a media outlet and spin this as a crime motivated by attacking his special needs?

The trust in media is at an all-time low, according to Pew. Things like this might be the reason for that.

The Latest: Police: Race not motive behind video attack

CHICAGO (AP) — The Latest on the beating of a man in Chicago that was broadcast live on Facebook (all times local):

7:45 a.m.

Chicago police say they don't believe a man beaten in an assault broadcast live on Facebook was targeted because he was white.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Thursday morning that charges are expected soon against four black suspects. Guglielmi says the suspects made "terrible racist statements" during the attack, but that investigators believe the victim was targeted because he has special needs, not because of his race.

Guglielmi says it's possible the suspects were trying to extort something from the victim's family.

Video from Chicago media outlets appears to show someone off-camera using profanities about "white people" and President-elect Donald Trump. Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said Wednesday that the victim has mental health challenges, and he called the video "sickening."

Guglielmi said police are working with prosecutors "to build the strongest case."

6 a.m.

Chicago police say charges are expected against four people who police say beat a man in an assault that was broadcast live on Facebook.

The victim is a suburban resident who Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson says has "mental health challenges."

Johnson called the attack and the video "sickening" at a news conference Wednesday. Johnson questioned why individuals would treat someone so harshly.

Police Cmdr. Kevin Duffin said Wednesday that he anticipated charges within 24 hours.

While police officials did not confirm the races of the suspects or victim, video from Chicago media outlets appeared to show someone off-camera using profanities about "white people" and President-elect Donald Trump.

Police say it's too soon to determine whether the attack was racially motivated.

Police haven't identified the individuals in custody, but say three are Chicago residents and one is from suburban Carpentersville.

people are OK admitting a person was targeted for being mentally handicapped, but not for being white, of course.

because shouting "#### white people" multiple times just isn't enough to say for sure.

It's weird. I don't need an ideological echo chamber to bring me news.

But I don't need flat-out liars doing it. I went to school with these kids. I know journalists. They're largely not as smart as your average poster on this board.

It's bizarre how much power they wield.

So this is where we are... it is better to attack somebody because of their disability rather than being white. Even though you are recorded saying f##k white people, and not f##k disabled people. Unbelievable

There'd be songs written if you substituted "white" for any other race.

The problem with hate crimes has always been ascertaining motive, however. I hate the whole idea of hate crimes. A crime is a crime.

And the judge should add 10 for being stupid enough to livestream & show their faces.

The whole incident is horrible enough but where have we come as a society where people think this is something to live stream. So insane.

The attackers are white and the mentally challenged male is an African American.....

Go.

It's the police that are trying to cover the race angle.  I suspect they are trying to angle away from retaliatory attacks, but given that everybody can actually see the video it seems rather desperate.  There really is no hiding the motivation.

I agree with this, theoretically.  there are probably practical/reality reasons I haven't considered.

regardless, if we're going to have them, apply them consistently to everybody.
I agree. But we knew hate crimes would never apply to traditional minorities. It was always a way to go after white racists, and nobody else.

Would it be a hate crime if roles were reversed?
I'd take the over on the # of major metropolitan areas where there'd be riots and/or protests if the roles were reversed given the video footage, especially if the media painted it as whites "attacking someone mentally challenged."

It's ok to admit that there are racist and violent people among every race.
No, it's not, actually. It's called white privilege and only white people can be racist because of systemic racism inherent in our society.

Or so goes the argument. This...this is justice, according to some.

I'm not sure what you mean. Generally calling a victims parent is not a requisite element of kidnapping.

It was text messages to the effect that we are holding your son or have taken him. Shows that they had the intent of kidnapping him maybe? Otherwise since he knew one of them it may have been difficult to prove?

In before fat guy in a little coat says that I should be paying more taxes to go to these clowns

Yes but it wouldn't be national news.
But at least I would be able to steal a flat screen TV and some liquor without repercussionsBut at least I would be able to steal a flat screen TV and some liquor without repercussions

Bullstick. Mathew Shepard was national news, had songs written about him, etc.

This is wishful thinking with the worst intention.
The Matthew Shepard story only made the national news because he was killed.
