5 kickers and 1 punter, is this normal? Are they being tagged because the cap hit is so low for that position? Are they really that much better than another free agent kicker?

That's what I was thinking...are they being tagged because the hit is so low? My guess is YES. Are they really that much better than a street FA K? My guess is no. There are now 5 additional kickers being paid as "Top 5" kickers. That seems to be a logjam at the top, but maybe the rate is not much higher than FA minimum, and therefore worth the investment. It is not like they HAVE to use the tag.

I remember numbers that PK was setting records this year for length of FG's. And ask a team like Lions who have had Jason Hanson forever and not had to worry about the position compare to Dallas who finally got a PK last year. I think they are more important than you think

I think it's just that the number is so low, that if you have a free agent PK you want to keep, there's really on downside to tagging them (assuming of course you had no other viable option of higher importance).

The Colts tagged Mathis, but is in the process of a long term deal. They just need to iron out the finishing details.

Interesting re: Mathis. I guess this will further fuel speculation of a Manning/Saturday/Wayne package deal (even though I think the reality of that happening is next to nil).

Great thread RM, ty.

Meachem - Seattle?
They spent on what's his name from the Vikes but I don't think they are finished at all. Definitely see someone signing there although I'm not so sure that Golden Tate won't surprise a lot of folks and come charging in year 3.
Yep, they signed Rice and his oh so healthy shoulders. I hope he can regain form from his one great season. They need someone else, seems Meachem would fit if he does not break the bank. I have some faith in Tate, but he really has not shown squat in two years.

That Mathis tag confuses me. Aren't the Colts going to a 3-4?

Even if they are going to play 4-3, that's a lot of money for your 2nd best end when you have so many other contracts to address.

Edit: I now see that they did indeed ink him to a long term deal since 4pm. I'll be interested to see how much he's getting.<br>

I think it's fairly suspicious that so many kickers and even a punter (a punter who was cut from his previous team a year ago) franchised this year. These guys could have been signed for just about as cheap (relatively) as the tag. Could this be collusion on the part of the owners to maintain a percentage of franchise tags without really dipping into their pockets?

Just seems fishy. Like the owners have some kinda angle or something.
