Minaya is a terrible GM. should have been fired the second he re-upped Luis Castillo. If it weren't for the Twins dumping Santana to him for garbage (rather than taking superior packages from NY or Boston) he'd be gone already.

Even then, he got lucky. The Yanks and Sox realized they were being played against each other and pulled their offers. (And I don't think the Sox were ever serious about getting him, they just wanted to prevent the Yanks from getting him.) The Twins had nowhere else to go after that. Santana wouldn't waive his NTC unless a long-term deal was in place, and the Mets were the only team left with the money to be able to do it. pp. 206-211 of Moneyball tells you all you need to know about Minaya.
