Free Agent RBs (1 Viewer)

Reggie Bush, Rashard Mendenhall, S Jax, Shonn Greene, Christopher Ivory, Felix Jones, Jonathan Dwyer, Danny Woodhead, Cedric Benson, Peyton Hillis and LeGarrette Blount are all FAs this off-season (and I'm sure I'm missing someone).

It's a weak rookie RB class overall, and there are some landing spots out there with a lot of potential.

Who goes where? Who's worth a speculative buy before FA opens?

ETA: to add additional RBs.

I believe the entire Pittsburgh trio of Mendy, Dwyer and Redman are FAs. Maybe we should also include D Will in this list, I'm not sure there is much of a chance of him returning to Carolina. Also, if we're including Blount, should we include Benson?

I think you got all the main ones.

Teams in need are the following (loosely organized by combination of situation and likelihood):

Packers - really need to get someone

Falcons - Turner done, Quiz is a mediocre backup at best

Cowboys - Murray mediocre runner and injury prone, Felix gone

Jets - might give Powell the reigns

Steelers - could settle for a Dwyer/Redman RBBC

Dolphins - might roll with a Miller/Thomas RBBC

Bengals - I'd be looking to upgrade BJGE if I was them

Colts - do they upgrade Brown/Ballard RBBC?

Broncos - Hillman pretty clearly seen as CoP, so do they roll with Moreno or 32 yr old McGahee?

Jaguars - MJD going to throw a fit again next year?

Chiefs - will need someone to pair with JC

First, I'd like to add that I completely forgot Detroit. They should be placed around #3 or #4 on that list. Although you would probably have said they like LeShoure more than I do, but LeShoure looks like a guy who tore his achilles last year. No explosiveness. They need a real RB there. 3.8 ypc is not getting it done. But maybe he just needs another year to get back. I wouldn't chance it if it was up to me.But to your comments:

Atl- if they like Quiz so much then why aren't they unleashing his 3.9 ypc ability in the wake of Turner's 3.7 ypc season? Quiz was overhyped like crazy here and I guess it is still lingering. The guy isn't good.

Dal- You might be right that they like Murray, but they'll definitely replace Felix with someone. And at some point they'll stumble upon the fact that whoever they brought in is better than Murray as a runner. Of course that depends on who they bring in, but anybody can run for 4.1 ypc in that offense.

Cin- Cincy is a fringe playoff team. You really don't think they'll look to upgrade or at least supplement BJGE?? I think DeAngelo would be a nice guy to pair up with him.

Ind- I think you're a bit strong with the "Ballard for sure" thing. Guy had one good game and it was last week. Let that simmer for a week and get back to me. No one can know for sure, but I suspect he's merely an average back at best. Brown is more explosive and will be motivated during a contract year. They are both relatively cheap. I'd at least bring in competition and/or Brown's eventual replacement if I were mgmt.

Den- how do you figure Moreno is gone? He's going to be almost a million dollars cheaper than McGahee, I think he's 6-7 years younger, and he's looking pretty good in his 2013 audition so far. I think Manning has found his new Addai. Wouldn't shock me to see Fox bring in DeAngelo if/when he's cut, though. I think McGahee is gone.

Jax/KC - I agree. That's why I listed them last.

I don't get the Murray hate. He's had a couple of fluke injuries and otherwise has put up VERY solid numbers.

Great analysis/opinions both of you.Falcons - They definitely like Quizz. He does have a +21.8% DVOA receiving and 88% catch rate. Those are pretty good numbers. He's not going to start getting 15 carries a game but he has a role in 2013. He's a role player, not a backup (semantics, I know).

Cowboys - They definitely like Murray, and they definitely need depth. I think they're pretty confident at drafting RBs and will not pursue FA. JMO. Could see Knile Davis go there as a 5th or 6th and look good.

Jets - Powell is not good enough. Who knows what coaching staff will be there, but it seems like a position that needs to be addressed somehow. Seems like they'll get a big name or draft someone in the 2nd.

Bengals - I don't think they'll be looking to replace BJGE. Seems like another team that will draft a backup. Probably higher than they drafted Herron. Can't bring myself to drop Peerman from my fantasy teams - could be the main backup in 13 with a rookie eventually taking over.

The guy isn't good. I think there's a bit of a nod of respect to Turner still, and the team is winning, so that's why he continues to get most carries. I agree that Quiz has a lot of question marks, but I think the coaching staff is high on him and his role will continue to grow into next year.

Dal- You might be right that they like Murray, but they'll definitely replace Felix with someone. I suspect all of Indy's moves in the offseason will go into their o-line.

I think McGahee is gone.Talk about making assumptions based on a small sample size. Moreno wasn't even active most of this year, he was on his way out until Willis went down. He's done well and should be applauded for doing so, but I don't think he's kept his spot in DEN and he hasn't erased his entire career of suck with a couple of good games. I think Hillman is a bigger part of the O next year, McGahee is back plus someone else. I like your DeAngleo suggestion here more than Cincy, plus the Fox angle makes sense.

Jax/KC - I agree. That's why I listed them last.
Good stuff, fun to speculate.

Cin- Cincy is a fringe playoff team. You really don't think they'll look to upgrade or at least supplement BJGE?? I think DeAngelo would be a nice guy to pair up with him.
Given what they paid him, and how he's looked the last half of the season, I don't see them moving away from the Lawfirm. They definitely need some sort of speed back to pair with him, though. BJGE and DWill would make a great inside-out combination, but DWill's contract kills that, IMO. Maybe they resign Scott, and bring in Felix?

I agree Jerrha thinks he knows how to draft RB's now because he hit on Murray.

He's patting himself on his GM back for that one and will try again. :loco:

I know we're talking free agent running backs. But could any unexpected running backs get cut and think they'll be on the move. The first guy that came to mind is Roy Helu. Coach shanahan doesn't seem to like him, he barely got work before his injury and Morris has looked real good this year that they may have no need for him and maybe they take a scat back type runner later in the draft next year. Not sure where Helu would end up but if he moves on from the Redskins I think he could have a good year next year. Not sure the likelihood of any of this but he is under contract through 2014.

Bengals will probably just look to take a speedier back in the 2nd or 3rd round. They have the extra 2nd round pick from the Raiders and don't have too many other needs, especially on offense. If they did look at FAs, I think Reggie Bush would be an interesting guy to pair up with BJGE. He could be a 3rd down guy and also get a couple series a game as a change of pace guy to BJGE.

It would just depend how much money Bush is looking for and if he is okay with being a backup. If he'd sign for something like 2 years, $7 million, he could be a good fit.

They won't be trying to replace BJGE, but I'd be shocked if they don't look to upgrade at #2 RB (and they are also likely to be looking for a guy to groom as the starter in a year or two).

I think Reggie Bush to either NYJ, SD, or Dallas. Absolutely no chance in Green Bay. The Packers won't want to pay him and Hollywood Bush won't go to northern Wisconsin anytime soon. Bush would be happy to go to NY, Big D, or SoCal though. Just my guess.

I agree. Role player is a better fit than backup. I was mainly getting at the fact that his name should never be #1 on a depth chart. Given his skills as a runner, your team is in trouble if you see him getting double digit carries. So bottom line, I see Atlanta being a hot FA/rookie landing spot for potential low-end RB1 production next year. Given the $h1t heaped on Blount for his pass catching/blocking skills, rightly deserved or not, I think he seems like a great fit for a Turner replacement given Rodgers' 3rd down role.

Moreno was inactive because after the first week he showed he still needed some time to recover from his ACL surgery.

As someone else mentioned, I should've called Quiz a role player. His role is going to stay the same. Guy is a short, slow RB who isn't going to get faster. Someone else will get Turner's carries next year. I would take the under on 100 carries for Quiz next year.Check Ballard's game log. He's got one good game. Couple decent ones against the pitiful Titans but that's about it. His NE game was ok. He's got 164 carries at 4.1 ypc. Not too different than Moreno who you think is going to get dropped for some reason.

Speaking of Moreno, I totally agree. Some assumptions have to be made here, but they are much less extreme than expecting a 32 year old big back to return from a knee injury at 2.5 million dollars. It IS a small sample size but Denver is giving Moreno all he can handle. In four games he's already compiled 94 carries and 14 receptions (on 17 targets). They've got two games left and the playoffs. I don't think his 2013 fate has been determined yet. A lot of it is riding on how he performs during that span. He's going to be 26 next year and on the final year of his rookie contract. You are almost certainly correct that he was on his way out until Willis went down, but that's how it goes in the NFL. It took some luck for him to get his opportunity, but he's off to a good start with it. His career of suck is moot. This is John Fox's first year with the team and he'll be riding Moreno into the playoffs. He could endear himself or fumble away this opportunity. For now, though, I'd think Moreno would be the Vegas favorite for 2013 starter.

I don't get the Murray hate. He's had a couple of fluke injuries and otherwise has put up VERY solid numbers.
:goodposting: Some must either hate the Cowboys or Murray himself. Murray looks pretty good when I watch him.
I've got nothing against either. Just being objective. Murray feels like a good player from a fantasy perspective due to his rushing workload and high amount of receptions. But as a first/second down runner, he's a middling RB. Last year he blew up against a couple bad defenses and a few people speculated he'd struggle the next year. So far he's rocking a 4.1 ypc average on a pretty solid offense. The Cowboys could plug quite a few guys in there on 1st/2nd down that would be much more effective.

I think Manning has found his new Addai. Wouldn't shock me to see Fox bring in DeAngelo if/when he's cut, though.

Who do they plug in that will be better? If you look at Dallas' running stats over the last few years, they've been headed south. I think that says more toward the OL than it does Murray. Dallas has been a pretty solid offense in spite of their joke of an OL. It's too soon to say Murray needs to be replaced.

Just about anybody. The guy is like a poor man's Chris Johnson. Feast or famine. If he doesn't get one long run in, you know he's going to end up with a ypc in the 2-3 range. Need to find someone who can get some yards on 1st and 2nd down so you are in 3rd and short range. Tired of watching him dance around and lose yardage. But I remember that's how he broke his long run in week 1. Was dancing around running backwards and eventually he slipped out for a really long gain. But normally he gets tackled back there and kills the drive. He's a 3rd down back. Great pass catcher and does well in space. Total turd on early downs.

I think you got all the main ones.

Teams in need are the following (loosely organized by combination of situation and likelihood):

Packers - really need to get someone agreed

Falcons - Turner done, Quiz is a mediocre backup at best I think they like Quiz more than you do

Cowboys - Murray mediocre runner and injury prone, Felix gonei think they like Murray more than you do

Jets - might give Powell the reignsagreed, but with new coach who knows

Steelers - could settle for a Dwyer/Redman RBBCBlount!

Dolphins - might roll with a Miller/Thomas RBBCagreed

Bengals - I'd be looking to upgrade BJGE if I was thembet they don't

Colts - do they upgrade Brown/Ballard RBBC?they will go with ballard for sure

Broncos - Hillman pretty clearly seen as CoP, so do they roll with Moreno or 32 yr old McGahee?fox likes a stable of backs, i expect all except moreno to be back plus another decent name

Jaguars - MJD going to throw a fit again next year?who cares they will be terrible

Chiefs - will need someone to pair with JCmaybe new coach will give JC the carries he has always deserved
I wouldn't chance it if it was up to me.
I think Detroit rolls with Leshoure and Bell next year, and maybe drafts one late. They don't have the cap room to sign any big name RB, and they will need to spend whatever money they have on CB, S, LB, and OL. Wild card here is if they sign Stafford to an extension that frees up some money next year. I think getting Stafford an extension will be DET's first priority after wrapping up Calvin last year. Need to keep that combo together for as long as possible. If they do free up money, I don't think RB is the first position they will be looking to upgrade. In fact, I could see them getting a WR over a RB after being decimated with injuries at that position this year.

Realistically they should give Bell a shot, but LeShoure is down to 3.7 ypc on the season. He's also had 200 carries now without hitting a 20 yard run yet. They won't start the year with 2 backs. Maybe they should drop a 3rd on someone. Plus, it's not like they'd have to break the bank to sign a decent FA to compete, though. FA RBs are not that expensive. They need a running threat to take some pressure off their mediocre QB.

The Colts are happy with Ballard. They will be fine when they upgrade their O-line in the offseason.

Watch for the Colts offense to take off next season!

I hear there is a chance for the Colts to bring in Norv Turner as the OC which I like!

There are plenty of teams that are happy with their RBs, but won't go into the season with just a second-year late round pick that had a good, but not anything close to great, year. I'm sure he'll be in the mix, but I'd be shocked if a vet wasn't brought in as well.

Prepare to be shocked. While some may be brought in, it is for depth. The Colts took:LuckFleenerAllenAnd Ballard with their first 4 picks for a reason.

So Arians is kicked to the curb after the job he's done this season?I suppose he could choose to leave for a HC job.

I don't see it.

Ballard was durable, and that was about it. He showed no great skill in any facet of the game.

Ballard = JAG

But don't forget Brown will be back on a contract year for 2013. I don't think the Colts will be prioritizing RB this year. They might take a flyer on a guy to develop for 2014.

Being heavily invested in Ballard, sadly, I have to agree with this assessment.
What was Jerome Bettis' special skillet? What about Alfred Morris?
:lmao:
Just to clarify, Ballard has higher yards per carry and yards per catch than Bettis did for his career. And Ballard is a rookie. But laugh away. I ask again, what was Bettis' special skill set?

You asked what Bettis' skillet was, not skillset.

Now that is funny! Damn autocorrect on my phone!

I don't see Detroit or Dallas signing any "decent" free agent RB's.

Detroit may draft a speedy guy to go with what they have an be set.

(RB is not really there main issues, run blocking and play calling are)

Yah Detroit could get better than they have, but they won't spend to get it.

Dallas could use Backup help, but Murray's an excellent running back for them

as long as he's on the field, I'm not ready to write him off as injury prone yet as

ankle injury's plague many running backs each year and that was him this year.

(so I see Dallas draft a backup late or sign a lesser backup type guy but not main)

Detroit hasn't been dropping early draft picks on running backs because they aren't concerned with the ground game. Stafford's struggles this year only make their need for a legitimate ground threat even greater. They didn't like Kevin Smith for whatever reason and LeShoure has been awful. So they can either roll with Bell, which they've been strangely reluctant to do, or they can bring someone new in via draft or free agency.Have you watched any Dallas games or do you just own Murray in several dynasty leagues? He'll make a good role player, but he's not an excellent running back. He had a few good games against weak defenses in 2011. That was nice, but he hasn't done anything since then. Dallas needs to address their Defense, though, so maybe Murray gets another shot to show how mediocre he is.
I think Blount would be awesome in Pittsburgh.
Blount is a RFA, chances are he will be back in Tampa. When is the last time a RFA switched teams? Does he really offer anything that Redman or Dwyer don't?
Blount is gone. Schiano doesn't like him and he probably feels like he never got a fair shot. It'll be a mutual divorce.

That's alright, I just happen to disagree with pretty much all your assessments about Detroit and Dallas.Guess we'll have to wait and see......
