Which HoF players are we watching today? Something which is often discussed, but I dont remember it on this or the FFA board anytime recently.

With that in mind, lets get two consensus lists going.

1. If we stopped today/end of this season who would be in the Hof?

2. For those guys who wouldnt make it in "just" yet because they need to pad the resume, who is expected to be a lock so long as nothing unforseen happens (i.e. career ending or damaging injury, falling off a cliff stats wise, etc.)?

As for the first, Im sure to leave some out - and this is not about who I think deserves to go in, but who is expected to make it.

Offensive Players that are DEFINATELY IN today:

Henderson

Bonds*

Arod

Griffey

I Rod

Piazza

Jeter

Frank Thomas

Biggio

Probably:

Jeff Bagwell

Kent

Maybe:

Sosa

Alomar (dont see it happening at this point but career probably deserves it)

Offensive Players that should definately make it in, but need a bit more work:

Ramirez (might be in if we stopped today)

Suzuki

Pujols

Pitchers definately in NOW:

Pedro

Rivera

R Johnson

Maddux

Glavine

Clemens

Smoltz

Probably:

Schilling

Maybe:

Hoffman

Need more on the resume:

Johan Santana (long way to go, but really arent many options out there)

Who have I left out, or where might I be mistaken? Curious what the concensus will be.

Surprised that after some true all time great pitchers there is a gap between any real possibility for the next HoFers - win totals are so far down also, curious to see how that pans out.

You're missing several asterisks.

If any of them are caught using steroids, it's going to really hurt their chances for the HoF.

These are my opinions:

Shoo-in:

Bonds/Arod/Henderson/Biggio/Piazza/Griffey

Probably/Maybe:

Frank Thomas/Jeter/Sheffield/Manny/Bagwell/Sosa/Kent/IROD

Huge ??'s: Alomar/Chipper/Thome/Edgar Martinez

Vlad/Suzuki/Pujols needs a little more work.

Pitchers:

Shoo-in: Clemens/Maddux/RJ/Pedro/Rivera

Probably: Glavine/Schilling/Smoltz

Maybe: Mussina/Hoffman

Santana needs more work.

Probably: Glavine
I don't how you could leave a guy from today's era that wins 300+ games out of the hall. Throw in 26 postseason victories, 10 all-star appearances, and 2 Cys and I'd be really shocked if he doesn't make it. He's not the shoo-in that Maddux, Clemens, and Rivera are, but he's still got to be in.

How is Alomar a maybe? He's a stone cold lead pipe lock. One of the great 2b of all time.

Sheffield is in.

Thome's got a good shot.

Manny I would guess is right there.

Umm we already have a 3 page thread on this exact topic. Doctor D's sig is from it

Smoltz is also in.
I could see Smoltz having a tougher time getting in. Only 200+ wins for his career, and only one season where he managed 20 victories. He only finished in the top TEN of Cy Young balloting four times in eighteen seasons. He deserves consideration, but he's defnitely a notch or two behind Glavine.

His seasons as a reliever put him in. He was a great starter, top notch playoff pitcher, and one of the best relievers in baseball when he was closing. He's in.

Why do you ignore his years as one of the leagues best relievers? And didn't see the other thread. :shrugs:

I'm not going to badmouth Smoltz. He was indeed one of the best relievers while he was at it, but that was only a 3 1/2 year span. I just don't think 200 wins and 150 saves over a career of nearly 20 seasons makes him a lock. Personally, I hope I'm wrong.

I hate the Braves (Mets fan) but Smoltz imo is a near shoo in. Regardless if I think he deserves it (and he probably does but I wouldnt be up in arms if Smoltz didnt make it), I do firmly believe Smoltz will get in.Had smoltz not lost four years to relieving (I think it is a full four), figure 70 more wins... he would certainly have a shot at 300 overall.

:goodposting: I think Smoltz is almost automatic with his playoff success, his relief success, and his raw stats and plus numbers.
