When is handcuffing a player the right thing to do in redraft leagues?

The best ones seem to be drafted too high and the others not worth a roster spot until you're the dominant team in your league and have a free spot or

your the desperate team in your league that can only win if the other teams stud gets hurt so you steal his handcuff(bad mojo there.)

It seems handcuffs are too expensive to draft if they are going to save your team (4th /5th Rnd Larry Johnson 05)

or

The handcuff isn't going to save your team and too expensive to take a roster spot (06 M. Morris)

If you knew L. Johnson 05 would have performed well enough to fill your RB2 slot and Merriman was going to break Preist's neck, great, but can you expect that from a handcuff projected to be taken in the 4th round?

Feel free to post what handcuffs you think are worth value in what round.

12 team league, 1qb, 2rb, 3wr,1te, 1def, 1k, 7 bench for a guide.

Our league has an interesting set up so my opinion on the matter may be skewed from the "norm". However it depends on how many teams are in your league, roster size, etc. Being a redraft league the importance of them is lower than that of it being a dynasty/keeper league.

You make many points as far as if they are necessary. There are becoming more and more RBBC in the NFL. If you grab the right handcuff at times you can pull a MBII who will rack you up a ton of td's.

You first need to get your base of RB's before you draft any handcuffs. Therefore, you need your starters and one more, maybe 2 if you get the chance. Then you draft any necessary handcuffs.

IMO I wouldn't draft the handcuff to Alexander, LT, SJAX, etc (the clear cut stud RB's to which the "handcuff's" only chance to play is an injury" and most of those players aren't injury prone). Unless of course, your purpose is to save yourself from an injury happening to one of your starters.

I guess in short, draft your base RB's first to cover your starting positions and an extra one (maybe 2). Then you need to decide what the purpose of your to-be-drafted handcuff will serve on your team. A backup to one of your starters to save from an injury or do you want one that has the possibility to put up some decent points and has the chance to take over.

That in itself is a philosophy that can be debated...depends on the drafter.

League and Roster sizes was a good point.

Most roster sizes have a limit. Most of my leagues go with 1BN per Position. Not sure what the norm is and there are probably many leagues that add 1 or 2(and one I'm in subtracts one)

League size with roster size impacts the where the waiver wire top players begin. Most leagues are 8 -12.

Starter requirements are also an impact.

So let's assume a 12 team league, 1qb, 2rb, 3wr,1te, 1def, 1k, 7 bench.

I think a true handcuff is a player you would not start unless something happens to the starter, such as injury or unexpected performance. When do you hold a player?

Betts is gona to be the next LJ handcuff.. and when I say that.. I mean hes gona to be taken way too early for most Portis owners.

Well I'm in a dynasty league but if you looked at my team of RB's for example:

Steven Jackson

Rudi Johnson

Cedric Benson

Julius Jones

We have 6 spots for RB's. Now I know a team wouldn't be able to draft both Jax and Rudi but just relate it to your drafted RB's (RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4). Considering how my starting 2 are very strong and I have a legit 3rd option in Benson and a very strong RB4 (from on my team) then I would probably draft all backups to my players. If your 4 RB's aren't strong then it might be wise to draft handcuffs of other players so you have the chance of them possibly taking over the load or at least sharing carries with a player other than who's on your team.

There really isn't a right or wrong way because it all depends on how your draft goes. You need to evaluate your team as you draft and make your decision which route you want to take then (backups for your RB or split carry RB for potential starters).

Fuzzy humor logic aside,

When is a handcuff worth it and not just a consolation that you're team is destroyed?

With the handcuff, you missed an opportunity with that pick and used up a roster spot, for what?

Without the handcuff, the mercy of the waiver or the league-mate poking at you with ridiculous offers for a handcuff that is not going to save your season

In the immortal words of Ditka, "It is what it is."

I would rather have some upside RBBC I can use on a bye week and has the best chance to increase his value,

than a guarantee that if my player is injured I have his potentially good backup that took a draft and roster spot from me and I can't use on a bye.

Well, then you answered your own question. Again though, it is merely a philosophical question that has strategy intertwined with it. What might be a good method for one might not be for another...it depends on your team and your needs, or lack there of.

However, I don't agree with you 100%. I do find it might be necessary (given your team's roster allows you) to get a pure backup to one of your starters. An example, if you lose a starter on a NFL team that has a potent offense then you can pretty much guarantee that the replacement (backup) will put up "similar" numbers.

Now if you didn't have your player's backup then you are down one of your best RB's on your team and nothing to replace him with but the RBBC guy you would rather not have to play because he'll give you half the points. If you had the backup then you still have that clear cut starter (until your original player returns from injury) that will give you more than just the half of the points the RBBC guy will give you.
