Arizona's D did a good job stopping the run. I believe that was their plan. Stewart's running style was a little more successful against them today, but overall Newton aired it out. It's early to put a fork in DeAngelo isn't it?
Me too. Steve Smith sure is excited to play again. Going to be a long tough road this year... again... but the future looks bright in Carolina. Good for Cam.

Stewart had a better ypc, but half of his yards came in one of his 7 runs. I don't know that a long run of 13 (Stewart) compared to a long of 8 (Williams) really means that much when both guys are only getting about 2 yards per carry outside of their long.I'm concerned about the Carolina running game generally. 19 carries combined for Williams and Stewart for 56 yards looks like a problem. Good game by Newton, but if he has to pass for 400 yards and 2 TD's every week to keep the Panthers in games, it's going to be a long year (again) for Panther fans. How many of Newton's 8 rushes were called runs vs. improvs from called passes?

I believe two, maybe 3 were designed runs. Two were at the goal-line (one stuffed, one scored). I don't remember if he had another designed run anywhere else in the game, but figure there was at least one more. Arizona kept a lot of guys in the box to stop the run and pressure Newton. Good game by both teams and Newton certainly raised his expectations a bit with over 400 yards passing. Announcers said that no rookie had ever thrown for that many yards in their debut game before.
