Game Thread W1 - Detroit V Chicago (1 Viewer)

A horrible rule and we all know Johnson caught the pass.

However, we all know the rule and these players need to remember to maintain control of the ball at least until they hit the ground and get back up. It was plain stupidity on Johnson's part if he just let go.

It's a terribly hypocritical rule. If you run the ball in, cross the plane, and get it knocked out of your hand, it's a TD and a dead ball. But this you can take 4 steps, get knocked down, all with control of the ball, but when you try to get up and the ball slips out of your hand it's incomplete????

SERIOUSLY????

Does any league have worse rules than the NFL?

That's a touchdown in college, high school, middle school, rocket football, flag football, beer league football, paper football. But not the NFL.

For the Lions to lose Stafford, then make an amazing defensive stand on the 1 yard line... lose the lead anyway and then still make an amazing comeback, and then to get it stolen away like this... what a sick injustice. Billick was punching one hole after another into this nonsense rule. What a JOKE!!!!

Is the rule unfair? maybe.. but both teams played with that rule, and the rule was applied correctly. The refs did a good job. Had Calvin caught the ball with his feet on the ground, he could have been knocked over and dropped it right away. However by catching it in the air, if he falls, he has to maintain possession through the ground. He did not. Thus - no catch.

But he hit the ground with his knee down and the ball in his possession. That's what I don't get--why should he have to hold the ball any longer than that? Reminiscent of the overturned TD call when Harrington hit Pollard against the Bucs a few seasons back, only this one is worse.

Does anybody know the rational behind that rule?
Receivers will dive and slide while catching balls, to shield defenders, poor throws, good throws etc.So basically if a player is falling while trying to make a catch they need to hold onto it all the way to the ground and back up. The rationale is if a WR is going to go down to the ground making a catch he has to maintain full possession.

if that's not a TD i quit watching football
Can we hold you to this?I hate statements like this unless they are backed up.You don't watch one minute of nfl football the rest of your life or you're a fraudwe had a pact!i almost quit football after the '06 super bowl

As I said, it is a horrible rule. But Calvin Johnson knows the rule and still he decides to let go of the ball before he fully falls to the ground. He has seen these calls made before and with such an important catch he should have been way more careful. As horrible as rule can be, you still have to play by the rules. He didn't.

best analogy I've seen regarding this rule

You sure about that? I've never seen it made in the end zone before.

Keep justifying this because your Bears won.It was a terrible call.He had possession, took 2 steps, went to the ground on his ###, all while having complete control. While he was sliding he went to get up, and used the ball as a brace and it slipped out of his hand.I understand the rule, but they incorrectly applied it here. Terrible

The NFL always seems to give the refs a way to screw up the game....regardless of what the rule is refs have to use common sense.

Common sense in this situation was that he had complete control of the ball before letting it go.

NFL refs are either morons or they are cheating...

Mind you, this is coming from a Bears fan.

Not sure about the end zone thinking back. But am I the only one who was thinking he shouldn't have let go of the ball at that point? Why tempt the rulebook?

Crappy call. Also, I am pretty sure the rule says nothing about getting back up versus maintaining complete possession when going to the ground. So, does a player need to stop moving for a certain period of time before they spike the ball? Do they need to bring the ball all the way home?I think I understand the point that a person going to the ground must maintain the ball the when they go to the ground, but it seemed obvious that Johnson was trying to get up to run and celebrate and lost the ball by using it to get up. At some point the play should stop. It is one thing if a guys guys to the ground and rolls and the ball pops out versus a guy getting up to celebrate a game winning TD.

If the reason for the rule is to make sure the receiver has possession throughout the process of catching the ball, he clearly had possession. The guy catches it, rolls on the ground maintaining possession, the lets it go as he stands up. How on earth could in be interpreted that he lost possession. He had possession, broke the plane and maintained possession. Terrible interpretation of the rule. Absolute robbery.

Props to all the Bears fans who think that call is horrible. I can't image any neutral fans thinking that rule is even somewhat reasonable, and if that happened between the Chargers and Bills I'd be just as outraged.

The Lions are improved...should win 5-8 games, imo, and many more in the future. This is the last stand for the vets on the Bears D, and with a healthy Urlacher/Briggs/Tillman/Peppers/Harris, I see them winning 8-11. Too bad it had to end like that, but great for Cutler/Best/Forte owners...

The Bears out-classed the Lions, but tried and almost/should have given the game away...

I am a Bears fan, but they really didn't deserve to win that game. I thought that should have been a TD. And if the Bears had kicked the FG earlier, the win would not have come down to that call!

Seriously? After watching that debacle I'm thinking Chicago 2-14, Detroit 0-16.
