Game Thread W12 - Pittsburgh V Baltimore (1 Viewer)

Boller in for McNair. Good chance to get him some work.I have to say that of all the teams we've played this season, this Baltimore team looks to be the best by a decent margin as we never were really in this game. Good luck to the Ravens the rest of the way.
Well, you've seen them at their best, that's for sure. I will say this, though, they seem to be getting better as the season goes on.

Steelers had there chances this season. The earlier games beginning of the season ,where they had full control of games ,but lost because of turnovers. That has come back to haunt them Season is over now.

It keeps getting worse. Cowher announced at his PC that Polamalu has a "significant knee injury".

I recall making a comment in Week 1 that they were a bit fortunate to beat Miami in that game and nearly got banned from the internet... Things didn't look right that game and we all know what has happened since. Tough to repeat, injuries, no Bettis, Ben's crash -- just too many things to overcome.

Lets not forget they also had to go through the changing of the refs uniforms back to black and white after the super bowl.

Every week there is a new rumor on the coaching situation and Cowher's future there. That doesn't help.

You cant win every year. I been a steeler for for 25 years ,and i will continue to be a fan for the next 40 years. We have gone to the AFC title game 3 out of the last 5 years ,and won a super bowl. I will take that.

I agree it's tough to repeat, but I never expected them to be this freakin' bad..... eliminated from the playoffs this early in the season?!? Never woulda guessed that. :sadbanana:

As a Ravens fan, the thing that shocked me was how terrible the Steelers offensive line was. They were always such an outstanding unit -- yesterday they were horrible. Yes, the scheme was fooling Pittsburgh and allowing unblocked pass rushers, but there were also plenty of times when Steelers O linemen were just getting blown up one-on-one.

I also have no idea why Cowher sent Ben back into that game and kept him there. Maybe he wanted to show he wasn't giving up. But to me, that shows the danger of having a short-timer as your coach -- if Cowher were going to be around next year, he would have taken his short-term lumps and benched Ben to preserve him for the future.

Agreed. The Steelers were completed dominated on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Unlike any game I've seen under Cowher. I'd bet the Steelers spend an early pick or two on the OL this year. Hopefully they'll look at adding a young OLB too.

Steeler fan here. I defended the Steelers for most of the season as "bad luck" but the Raven's spanked them every which way. Raven's definitely look to be the team to beat in the AFC. I've always disliked Billick and the thugs on the Raven's but McNair truly rules and has to be considered for MVP (LT should win though)!!!!

NC State job is now open ......Cowher already bought the house in NC and should be making the the big announcement in Jan/Feb.

I just don't see this happening. I think Cowher will retire and take some time off, but I don't see him stepping down into the college ranks. Even if it is his alma mater. I fully expect him to be coaching again in the NFL in a few years.

I thought they should have taken Ben out too. He looked like a deer caught in the headlights by the 3rd quarter & it was obvious he wasn't going to get anything done that day.Suggs mentioned that the Ravens used some different blitz packages than normal & it doesn't appear the the Steelers were able to make any adjustments to stop them. Ben said that the Scott hit was the hardest he'd ever been hit in his life.

sprained MCL, not significant but he'll miss a few games.
Steelers Notebook: Knee injury will cause Polamalu to miss first pro football gameMonday, November 27, 2006By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-GazetteBALTIMORE -- Troy Polamalu will miss his first pro football game when the Steelers return home to play Tampa Bay Sunday. He probably also will miss the Cleveland game Dec. 7 with a sprained medial collateral ligament. No surgery will be required.Polamalu, a two-time Pro Bowl strong safety, left the game yesterday in the third quarter after getting tangled up in a pileup, when his left knee was injured.Polamalu said after the game he is hopeful he will return to play this season."I'm definitely optimistic about it," Polamalu said.

This unit has been shockingly bad this entire year. Some fans wanted the Steelers to pick Mangold in the draft but I wasn't one of them.... boy was I wrong.

They've been a hard team to really like, even if you're from around here. For the most part, they've been a chest-thumping, trash-talking bunch of underachievers and that kind of persona doesn't resonate very well in this part of the country. But I've never understood the hate for Billick (which even Joe Bryant has confessed to). He's a smart and articulate guy, and maybe that very articulation rubs people the wrong way, but the "genius" tag was applied by somebody else and, to my knowledge, he's never even made mention of it. Kornheiser, for example, fuels the fire by calling the "smartest person in the room" on PTI and stuff like that doesn't help. Now, I'm not saying he's a modest guy by any means, but it's evident that the team responds pretty well to his leadership and the stability at the top has been good for the franchise.

I have to admit, I never have really liked Billick either, but his talent as an offensive coach is undeniable. I think between the addition of McNair, Billick returning to playcalling, and the influx of young talent on the defensive side of the ball, the Ravens took a few games to get everything solidified. But they've put it all together at the right time to make a run. Right now, I think they're probably the best team in the league. If they beat the Bengals on Thursday, it should be a cakewalk to the AFC North title and at least a first-round playoff bye.

The rookies on defense have indeed been a pleasant surprise. And McNair has been perhaps the biggest influence of all. He hasn't made any big mistakes, he's won a couple of games in the last few minutes and his whole professional demeanor seems to rub off on the rest of the team; they're not getting personal fouls and unsportsmanlikes by the bunch like they did in years past. While they're clearly the best team in the division this year, a win over Cincinnati is not a given, however. The Bengals felt that they got jobbed in Baltimore a couple of weeks back and their motivation will be running at a high level. Then again, I thought focus would be a problem yesterday, given the Ravens' big lead in the division. Instead, the team and the crowd were totally in it from start to finish.

Disagree. Ben got the wind knocked out of him with about 4:00 left but had recovered to the point where he took the final snap of the half. When the Steelers got the ball in the 3rd quarter the score was 17-0 and there was over 25 minutes left in the game. You are in a must-win situation and just last week Roethlisberger rallied the team from behind to score 21 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to beat the Browns. There is no way you replace your starting QB out of this game unless he is completely missing his targets. Anyone that watched the game yesterday knows their biggest problem on offense was the o-line. Saying they stunk is being way too kind and I don't think Batch would have fared any better.

I also disagree that Ben looked like a deer caught in the headlights. He didn't look that skittish to me -- I actually thought he was staying in the pocket too long. I was surprised the Steelers didn't call more plays to roll Ben out to get him out of the pocket and away from the pressure.

Either way the Steelers were not going to win that game. They were outplayed and outcoached in every aspect of the game.

He looked lost to me, my friend. I'm a Ravens fan, but I was worried he was going to get hurt given what I took to be his demeanor at the time. Maybe Batch would have had the same problems yesterday, but Ben just seemed a little out of it to me.I guess people see different things, maybe projecting their perspectives on what they see. I could certainly be reading it wrong (though I swear it would be the first time ;) ).

Ravens are playing very well right now, but Cincy and Indy are both tough match-ups for them. A team with a QB who can hit the deep ball in the face of heavy pressure will give them fits, especially because Samari Rolle has played so poorly this year.

On the bright side, the Ravens look like they can actually go score-for-score with teams this year, instead of praying for 17 points and hoping the D shuts down the opponent.

As a Ravens fan, I still can't get used to having a QB who actually makes plays -- especially on third down.

I doubt that any QB sacked 9 times and hurried countless others is going to look good. When I think of a QB as a deer caught in headlights I think of someone just throwing the ball away to avoid the sack. I didn't see Roethlisberger doing that.My point is that Roethlisberger is a better QB than Batch and you don't bench him while you still have a chance to win the game.

Didn't the Ravens owner sit down with Billick before the season and tell him to change his pompous demeanor?

He didn't only sit down with him, he went public with it - announcing it a press conference.

I think it was more a case of Steve Bisciotti asking him to be less openly critical and re-connecting on a more personal level with the players. Coaching a team of strong personalities like the Ravens is a daily challenge and some bruised egos are probably pretty inevitable. He was also asked to mend some fences with the Baltimore media; dealing with the press and its challenging questions is probably where his ego has been most on display. I'm friends with some local newspaper guys who cover the Ravens daily and they tell me what most believe, that Billick is pretty arrogant. I guess I'm in the minority with my opinion but I think it's because he's outdueled them pretty consistently in their weekly battle of wits and not because he's a big butthead.

Yep -- I was lazy and didn't do the calculations. Didn't have much incentive to do it after yesterday.
