Game Thread W5 - New England V San Francisco (1 Viewer)

Is Bryant Johnson active today? Or maybe a better question, will he put up another zero like last week?

ooof

The sad thing is you could see the confidence in Cassell's step when throwing that ball.

i believe i speak for all moss owners when i say....aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Kevin Faulk scores his second goal line TD of the game, this time from the same wildcat formation that killed the Pats against Miami.

Not really. Actually not even close. The wildcat formation has a RB at the QB spot taking the snap. This was simply shotgun formation with a direct snap to the RB. Much different.

Thanks for clearing that up for Fred. The guy is notoriously wrong.

Horrible. 3rd and 20 from the 45, down by 6 and SF decides to play prevent and give them a free pass into FG range. Don't any of the idiots on the Niners sideline realize that a FG is just as much game over as a TD is there? Get up in their face and make them complete a low percentage deep pass on you there.

After a rocky start this turned into a nice effort. Yet, since it's the Niners it's really difficult to guage how good the Pats are. With this win and Buffalo falling back to earth and Miami getting another nice win the AFC East looks like it could be a real dogfight this year.

A few observations from the game:

*Maroney looks awful. I saw nothing positive from him today.

*Great game by Faulk. He just makes things happen every time he touches the ball.

*Typical effort by Welker. Expect 6-7 receptions on a weekly basis. I'd be real suprised if he doesn't hit the century mark again.

*JT O'Sullivan has some wheels. He can definetly scramble.

*The Niners just don't have the skill players to do what Martz would like to do. Gore's a big time player but after him you have a solid Isaac Bruce and not much else.

*Gostkowski is turning into a stud. He's becoming automatic on FGs and his kickoffs have some serious leg.

*The Pats need to close on their pass rush. They get pressure but too often they don't seal the deal with a sack.

*Getting Moss involved was real important. It opened up some space for the rest of the offense to operate.

*The Pats need to tighten up their pass protection. The Niners got to Cassel more than they should have.

*Cassel really seemed to be getting comfortable as the game progressed. An area that really needs work is feeling the pass rush and getting his feet squared away in these situations. Yet, overall after a rough start he played well.

Just wanted to add more clarification on this too for non-fans who catch the Pats games... it's often utilized in the goal line with Faulk (usually) offset to the right of the QB and it features the QB faking as if the ball was snapped over his head while Faulk gets the direct snap and runs forward. As Pat said, not even close to the Wildcat formation. If anything, it's similar to the "Shotgun Snap" play in the Tecmo Bowl series.Other observations (to tie in with Boston)- Maroney will run hard at times but often I notice that he seems to stop then start behind the LOS trying to find the hole or look to bounce it outside first before realizing such isn't an option and ending up taking what's there. Whenever Morris or Faulk (esp.) are running the ball, they immediately attack the hole and run north/south direction.- Cassell... two things bugged me even into the fourth quarter. He seemed to lock onto the initial receiver for longer than necessary (4-5 seconds rather than 2 seconds, not open, move to #2 option), which led to some of his sacks. He also and my Dad noticed this too, he seems to look short first whereas Brady seemed to look deep, then middle, and finally dumped it off knowing that the safety valve was there from the snap of the ball. It seems like Cassell had a lot of coverage sacks (also tended to run up into the rush) and seemed to look short 4-7 yards first outside of the lone long throw to Moss.- Gostkowski reminds a lot, funny enough, of Vinatieri when he was a Patriot. I really think that letting him kick inside the 45 a ton and just going for it on 4th down his rookie year to limit his 44/45+ yard attempts really helped boost his confidence in the kicking ability and since then, Belichick has grown more comfortable trotting out Gostkowski for the longer kicks when necessary too.

I was excited to see O'Connell. After 2 INTs I was sure his time was coming. Then I was happy to see Cassell get it together. Maybe BB needed to put his feet to the fire this whole time.

Real positive step for him today
