Game Thread W5 - Pittsburgh V San Diego (1 Viewer)

Marty said they were going to do this. Turner was going to be his clock killer in the 4th quarter.

I think is going to have a big affect to Tomlison's numbers. This is where Tomlinson used to shine and get his extra yards and punch it in at the end of games.

It's been a long time since I can remember watching the OL get manhandled the way they did tonight and against Jacksonville. Jamal Williams was awesome tonight.

Ben didn't play very well and made a few mistakes, but I thought he threw the ball much better. He was running for his life almost every time he dropped back, and even when he had time, he seemed nervous in the pocket.

By the time he gets his head on straight this year, it's going to be too late... if it's not already.

Some may think I am crazy, but I think Turned would be a top 5 rb in this league if he wasn't stuck behind LT.
Exactly why they should start him over LT. Look at what he's doing the Steelers. LT can't do it. Turner can!
ack. that just sounds funny. :yucky:
You are kidding, right? Turner gets in there, runs the ball for a gain every time in this final drive. LT comes in and runs for 0 yards. Turner busts off a run. LT does next to nothing. Explain to me how it is that LT maintains credibility as a starter when his backup clearly does a better job. There is no need to stick with someone based on their name. Turner's numbers show he's the better option. Why not go with the better deal?

Impressive win by the Chargers.

As a Steeler fan I'm :cry:

As a Rivers dynasty owner I'm :pickle:

Turner is a very good running back. Tomlinson is better.People often say stuff like "Turner could probably start for half the teams in the league." Well, guess how many teams LT could start for? Turner is a tougher inside runner. Tomlinson is more versatile and a better player overall.

I do think that the O-line was subpar but Ben just played like dung. I thought they'd be a lot smoother after the bye week, altho San Diego's D is really tough.

A coming out game for Rivers. I'm glad that Marty and Cameron opened up the offense and allowed the kid to show why they were so confident in letting Drew Brees go. And an Antonio Gates TD to boot. I was beginning to lose faith

Two of the best DL's in the league, but no doubt the OL is not operating at its peak.Slight disagreement on Ben -- one of the key plays of the game was his throw it up and pray pass to no one in particular. He is not utilizing his mobility to extend plays like he has throughout his career. In turn, this helps the OL by tiring the defensive front and reining them in to keep Ben in the pocket.Look, the Steelers are in real trouble for making the playoffs, but they have lost to three likely playoff teams -- and their losses make these teams even more likely to make the playoffs. They can still make the playoffs but they will need to play much better than they have so far this season, especially on offense. At this point, they seem unlikely to finish any higher than 10-6, and that would entail sweeping all 6 home games plus defeating at least one playoff team on the road. Neither of those are easy, but they are doable. They will also be rooting for the Chargers to win the West. No matter what, it's going to be tough.

Doesn't matter what DL's they were... it strange to see that kind of pressure in the Steelers backfield. Ben's first INT wasn't that big of a deal since it worked out like a punt, and he was hit as he threw on the 2nd one. Not sure how accurate the pass would've been otherwise, but he had Ward coming accross the middle. But he's definitely not running and the Steelers arent moving the pocket like they've done in the past. When he had time, I thought his throws had more zip on them and the accuracy was there.They've lost to 3 likely playoff teams in 4 games, but that's not exactly a reassuring thought. No, the season isn't over, but they've got just about no margin for error and it's barely 1/4 of the way through the season. Next week is a new week.

People criticize Madden often but he was pretty spot on focusing on McNeil on offense and Williams on defense.

I really think McNeil giving Rivers time vs PIT blitzes was the difference in the game. McNeil received lots of praise for playing well in blowouts vs bad teams but tonights performence was very, very impressive. Going into this game I was worried PIT would just flood the left side and confuse the rookie but he held up pretty well. Still worried about the depth behind McNeil/Olivea but hopefully we have these two around for a long time.

Also, Madden started the game critical of the Chargers for not franchising Brees but as the game wore on was open-minded enough to change his opinion as the game wore on. He didn't choose a side and blindly defend his position all game long regardless of what was going on in the game to prove him wrong.... like some color comentators that change their names to rhyme with awards.

Madden gets too much criticism considering how bad most color commenators are.

Another guy that gets too much criticism is Marty. Just read this thread. When SD is behind half the people say it's because of 'Martyball' and being too conservative. Others point to Tomlinson not getting enough first half carries. So which is it anyway? Either way, when SD's passing game loosened up the PIT rush defense so SD could wind this game down in the fourth quarter how many people pointed to Marty as the reason SD was winning? Same old story; when SD loses it's Martys fault - when SD wins it's despite Marty.

Funny that I havent seen a single post from a bengals fan in this thread, but the steelers fans couldn't stay out of the bengals-pats thread. Welcome to 2006.

I didn't know that you needed a license this year to post in certain theads.

Well, the good news here for Steelers fans is that they can all point the finger of blame squarely at Ben Roethlisberger.

He's just not a very good quarterback. That interception he threw when the Steelers were up 10-0 set the wheels in motion for the San Diego offense.

I disagree with your entire post.The first interception put the ball on the Chargers 9 yard line. It wasn't Roethlisberger that let the Chargers march down and score a TD on a 91-yard drive.The defense could not get off the field last night in the second half. I think Madden hit the nail right on the head when he said the Steelers defense threw everything at San Diego and the Chargers handled it. Rivers had an exceptional game.The Steelers offensive line played one of their worst games in the past 4 years. San Diego was able to get intense pressure bringing on 4 and 5 guys, allowing them to drop everyone else back in coverage. The Chargers defense played a great game.Ben did not look good in the second half but neither did the entire team. The loss last night was a complete team effort.

I think it is fairly clear that entering this season one of these was true:

1. Roethlisberger was overrated, from both NFL and fantasy perspectives.

2. His offseason accident is having a serious effect on his play, contrary to what most Steeler fans around here seemed to be expecting.

Given the choice, I assume most Steeler fans will select options 2, and possibly augment that with his appendicitis, since the alternative is to face that he just isn't a great QB. We'll see. But his play so far this year is horrible. His QB rating, cited often as evidence of what a great QB he is despite his lack of accumulated totals, is 41.7. He has led the Steelers to 33 points in 3 games. And his remaining schedule doesn't appear to get much easier:

KC

@ATL

@OAK

DEN

NO

@CLE

@BAL

TB

CLE

@CAR

BAL

@CIN

I guess the Oakland and Cleveland games offer a glimmer of hope.

In order for the Steelers to make the playoffs they'll likely need to go 11-5. Given their remaining schedule it is not looking good that they will only lose 2 more games. The way the Steelers are playing right now 8-8 looks like a lofty goal. But there is still a lot of football to be played so why don't we let the season play out and see what happens?I agree that Ben has been having problems this season. Some people want to ignore his accomplishments the past 2 seasons and chalk it up to him being lucky. Time will tell...

:goodposting: Behind the goofiness that is Madden, there is plenty of good football insight, and he has always been able to take in what's going on rather than pushing his own agenda in the face of evidence to the contrary. I'll take him over just about any of the color commentators working today (though I did really like Vermeil and Jaworski in that first game of the season).It definitely looked like Marty learned from last week. The good news is he got paid off with an awesome performance by Rivers, so hopefully this will encourage Marty to stick with it and not revert back to being overly conservative. I was one of the villagers with pitchforks after Marty's hide last week, but I did have the caveat that he should be canned only if he did not adjust. He adjusted this week and won. Stay this course Marty!
