NFL source: Eagles wrap up extension with Feeley

By Bob Brookover

Inquirer Staff Writer

INDIANAPOLIS - The Eagles, according to a league source, completed negotiations on a three-year contract extension with quarterback A.J. Feeley this morning, which ended any chance for Jeff Garcia to return to the team in 2007.

Feeley, 29, has been told that he will be the backup to starter Donovan McNabb after spending last season as the No. 3 quarterback behind McNabb and Garcia. Details of the deal were not immediately known, but Feeley is now signed with the Eagles through 2010 because he had a year remaining on the two-year contract he signed with the team last summer after being released by the San Diego Chargers.

The Eagles started negotiations with Feeley recently because they were uncertain if they’d be able to retain Garcia, who led them on a magical playoff run after McNabb went down with a season-ending knee injury during a Nov. 19 game against the Tennessee Titans.

Garcia, who turned 37 Saturday, will officially become a free agent Friday with Tampa Bay and Denver among the most likely teams to pursue his services.

Why Denver? Jake will be gone and the Broncos could use a veteran back-up for Cutler, but isn't Garcia looking to start? That isn't going to happen in Denver.

He said "the same sources that told him Alstott will return" I don't know if he really has sources, calling if Alstott was coming back was a 50/50 chance. I think it's way too early, but I have a feeling Garcia would rather play in Tampa than Minny, Oak, or the other teams that have been named.

Who knows, but it's something to chew on.

I heard Denver wants him pretty bad. I doubt Garcia gets any offers to be a starting QB. Whatever team offers him the most money to be a backup will probably sign him.
