Garrard out for awhile (1 Viewer)

Searched, couldn't find a thread on this.

Coach Jack Del Rio said following Monday night's game that David Garrard, who suffered a sprained left ankle during the second quarter, might miss significant time, according to the Florida Times-Union. "He's got a pretty good sprain in there, so I would think that in all likelihood, he'll be missing some time," Del Rio said. "He tweaked it pretty good." Quinn Gray, who completed only nine of 24 passes for 56 yards and two interceptions, stands to start for Garrard in Week 8, though the team likely will seek further help elsewhere. "In all likelihood, based on the initial prognosis, [we'll have to bring in another quarterback]," Del Rio said. "I would think that'll be either [Lester Ricard] moved up to active or a veteran brought in, but we'll sort through that [Tuesday]." With Garrard, who hasn't been intercepted in 148 pass attempts this season, now on the sidelines, lower your expectations for the Jaguars' offense, which seemed much easier to defend after he left Monday. Gray represents a noticeable downgrade.

He had MRI yesterday, and Del Rio will say today around noon time how long Garrard may miss. Right now nobody knows until Del Rio says.

Given the fact that their only backup QB would be Matt "I can suck at two positions" Jones I think they would have to get another QB on the roster even if Garrard was only missing one week.

Full Disclosure: I'm a Garrard owner hoping this isn't too long term.

Does anyone really believe there is a possibility of Matt Jones making a start at QB? Could be pretty sweet to have QB numbers coming from the WR position... assuming he's a better QB than he is a WR (big assumption)

Not sure how serious the Aaron Brooks posts are, but I can't imagine he'd pick up the offense before Garrad's return, unless it's worse than your average sprain.

He'd still be an upgrade of Gray tho.

Too bad the trading deadline is over. Buffalo could have traded Losman to them for a first round pick, thus completely the circle of crappy QB swapping between them.

(rob johnson)

Wow - still bitter about Rob Johnson? That was 9 years ago!ETA: He was traded for a 1st AND 4th rounder.

David Garrard has a high ankle sprain and will miss the next three-to-four weeks, according to Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio.Del Rio added that the injury might linger and keep Garrard out as many as six weeks. He's droppable in shallow leagues. Quinn Gray played poorly against an Indianapolis Monday night, and doesn't have many favorable matchups in the near future. The Jags will likely either sign a free agent like Aaron Brooks or activate rookie Lester Ricard from the practice squad.

Their own fault for not keeping Leftwich around as backup in the firstplace
Nobody would intentionally keep around a backup that's making 5.5 Mil. Espcially when the starter is making peanuts.
How about going to Leftwich and negotiating a pay cut? That would have been better than cutting him at the start of the season.
Yeah but Leftwich would have likely injured his ankle in the 1/2 of an NFL football game that he would have been forced to play as Garrard's backup on Monday night based upon a similar stint of time on the field (< 4 quarters) before he himself was fallen by yet another ankle injury.

Leftwich was upset that he wasn't given an extension. Plus he and JDR didn't see eye-to-eye about the handling of his injury last year. There was no way that he was going to take a paycut. Plus taking a paycut would have made it easier for the Jags to trade him for something, anything. He would rather have been cut and sign a FA deal, which he did.

I say throw Matt Jones in there and run the option with MJD and Fred Taylor getting 20 carries a piece....

Not like they're going to find someone who can throw it downfield with any kind of consistency.

And besides, who cares about winning games... have some fun.

Has any team, ever, had 4 consecutive starting QBs that were black? Leftwich, Garrard, Gray...Brooks?
I think the Jags were the first team to have 1st & 2nd string black QBs, let alone 1st/2nd/3rd string black QBs.Lester Ricard (practice squad QB) is also black.

Well Matt Jones is #2 QB this week. Jones and DelRio supposedly worked some stuff out this week.

I'm thinking of being risky and starting Matt at WR.

Gray will play much better this week. Not sure if that will mean avg QB or good qb points though....

Well Matt Jones is #2 QB this week.
Didn't they sign Bouman as the backup QB?Link
saw it at Roto and either KFFL or here so I didn't put any more thought into where it came from.As you know, the #2 QB means nothing unless the starter gets hurt. I imagine it's "he knows the offense" vs "he doesn't" and next week could/should be different.

I wish all the best to Gray and yet unfortunately am stuck with the "what ifs" in regards to him getting hurt/sick or struggling or something and Jones gets a shot at QB. Would he stink or be real good? Would he be Vick or Randall or McNabb like with his running ability?

I'll look for a link in a few although of course JDR is free to change his QB rotation during the game so....it'd be FWIW but I'll look for a link

did a little digging

timeline seems to be JDR had no choice(no one else) but to say on Tuesday Matt would be the #2 QB. That got regurgitated over and over. As Bouman got picked up, since there hasn't been a statement that he's the #2QB, people are still rolling with what was said before he was on the team.

It's probably along the lines of what I said earlier-JDR will decide on gameday and just hope they can get thru a week with only Gray in at QB and it doesn't come to either backup.

Also since I came across this discussion on another board while searching, it's somewhat impractical to either have Jones or activate the PS quarterback they have. Injury opens up one roster spot. That either goes to Bouman OR the PS guy, not both. They're not using Jones too much so do they dump him? So to activate the PS guy they'd have had to drop another player. I don't think that was ever really a possibility.

Jacksonville, FL (Sports Network) - The Jacksonville Jaguars signed quarterback Todd Bouman on Thursday, as a backup for starter Quinn Gray on Sunday.
Link.I take that to mean he's QB2.

what ask vic said-

Donnie from St. Augustine, FL: Can you please, please put a stop to all the Matt Jones QB nonsense before it starts?

Vic: The whole Matt Jones saga is getting too much attention. It’s become somewhat of a soap opera and I fear it’s becoming a distraction. I saw that ESPN did a little segment on Jones’ beard, which is OK except that he wasn’t even active. When Garrard got hurt, Jones started warming up along the sideline, which is OK except he was windmilling his arms and moving about with the kind of urgency you would expect from a closer in the bullpen who just got a frantic call from the manager to get ready. Hey, folks, even if the Jaguars had to use their third quarterback, I doubt that he was going to do much passing. I think Jones has become a person of ancillary entertainment and that’s not good for him or the team.
