Gates the rest of the way (1 Viewer)

I have to admit, I've been real nervous with the way Rivers is playing. Antonio put up such strong numbers earlier this year, and now they've gone down considerably. Still, most of the "experts" remain highly optimistic:

From ESPN:

Outlook: He's the one thing going right for the Chargers' pass attack this season, even if his past two games have left a lot to be desired for fantasy. On the bright side, the Jaguars have allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to tight ends this year (6.7 ypg).

From Sports Illustrated:

[Antonio Gates]

Antonio Gates

6 rec, 55 yards, 1 TD

Gates is another victim of Rivers' poor play. He's caught only four passes in his last two games and scored in one of his last four games and has been held under 60 yards receiving three times in the last four games. The Chargers need to find more ways to get him the ball and if they have to throw a lot on Sunday he stands a good chance to produce. He's too good to sit and he will bounce back this week.

From CBS Sportsline:

Rushing yards are hard to come by against the Jaguars, so San Diego will likely have to go to the air if they want to score some points. Unfortunately for Gates owners, QB Philip Rivers has been downright awful lately. If he can find his rhythm and start finding his elite TE again, Gates should post No. 1 TE-type stats in Week 11 like he is capable of.

From ProFootballWeekly (the only ones who are more negative than postive):

It’s hard to get too excited about QB Philip Rivers these days. He has been held without a TD pass in three of the last four games and hasn’t crossed the 197-yard mark in four weeks. As a result, defenses are loading up to stop LaDainian Tomlinson, and TE Antonio Gates (four catches for 36 yards) and WRs Vincent Jackson (2-44) and Chris Chambers (7-76) have been rather quiet on the fantasy front.

From Scout.Com:

Play LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates regardless of the situation, but Jax could hold the Bolts to under 2 TDs this week.

The last one makes a good point: obviously all Gates owners will play him this week, and the rest of the year, and hope for the best. Still, if you offered me Winslow for him right now straight up, I'd have to give that strong consideration...

No, the point of the post was to see whether or not other Gates owners are as worried as I am...
Concerned, but not worried. Gates is my only TE in one of my TE-mandatory money leagues, and I know I can't find a WW tight end who's a better play than Gates.

I am benching Gates @ Jax in my non-TE league in favor of Walter vs. NO /Crayton @ Was/Patten @ Hou. I like all of their matchups better and given Gates recent duds I am taking a gamble and sitting him on the pine.

So the whole point of you post is telling us to play Gates and Tomlinson. Wow, that is some inovative advice.
I'm not trying to hijack or point fingers at G4L, but why does every thread that gets started that could lead to a legitimate discussion immediately get this kind of response. It's killing this place. These threads are rather important to some of us, and the next time someone may want to post information about one of your players but won't. Why? Because they don't feel like defending themselves on a message board that doesn't appreciate the info anymore. Instead they'll take it somewhere else.

Good point. Though I think the poster is a relatively new member and is possibly carrying some baggage while merely displaying the negativity and poor etiquette that is prevelant on so many other boards. Heres hoping that after frequenting the FBGs boards for a while he will lose the charmless demenour, wake up to what a freakin cool place this is and bestow upon us a multitude of mature and insightful contributions.. :wall: ... not worried about gates btw

Gates is still a WR1 that you get to use in the TE spot. In my league, which is 1 per 10 yards, .5 per catch, and 6 per TD, Gates checks in at WR10. He's ahead of both Steve Smith and Torry Holt, and that's using the same scoring for WR's and TE's. Start him weekly with confidence. He's only had 2 down games. Just be thankful those games weren't in weeks 15 and 16.

wow. just me, but that's a gamble I don't take. walter (with andre back) and patten (flash in pan) over gates? that's way risky, IMO.

I agree, too risky. In TE requird leagues, Gates must stay in your lineup. Even after 2-3 poor werks, he is still the leading TE in almost every scoring system. In non-TE required leagues, he checks in well inside the top 20 WR/TE.

In general, the negative postings, as well as information that is purely speculative instead of being backed with links or stats, comes from members with "high #s". G4L is in the 30,000+ range. This is by no means a rule, but is a general observation. That does not mean all low #s are insightful, nor does it mean high # folks do not make great contributions. Single digit #s are almost exclusively held by FBG staff. 3-digit #s are those here from the beginning who have not screwed up and lost their ac####, password, etc. or changed their identity. Four digit guys have probably been around for at least 4-5 years or so...some maybe longer if they opened a new account. In my case, I have had at least one previous identity on the board...I was a lower 4-digit person before I opened up a new account. Some guys from my league found the site and were able to stay one step ahead of me because of my moniker. Note for newbies: you should use a moniker that is NOT related to you nickname or moniker in your league...I guess my point is that new people tend to screw up. It is not inherently their fault since we all started that way. Recognize that somebody is fairly new given their # and give these folks a little bit more patience. G4L will may very well end up being a person who makes valuable contributions in time.Final note: this is not hi-jacking the thread into a mindless debate on the relative value of contributions based on your member #. That nonsense was tackled years ago to no avail. The # is useful only for getting a feel as to how long the person has been in the FBG community...that is it. It does not necessarily mean that they are new to fantasy football...nor does it mean they do not have any experience hanging out on the blogs...it simply indicates how long they have been a part of the FBG community...and thus whether we think the member has had enough time to "figure out" the community.

Good post. I didn't check the #. Mine is higher as well, but I was a 3-4 year lurker before finally signing up.

As a Gates owner though, I'm very concerned about his production the last 3 weeks. This week I'm truly hoping he gets some targets. If he has 3 or fewer receptions this week, I think the addition of Chambers may have negatively affected Gates' value in ff.

I am also a Gates owner...which I assume we all are. I am not convinced that Chambers has had much of an effect.

Targets/Catches/Yards/TD

week 1: 12, 9, 107, 1 TD

week 2: 8, 7, 77, 1 TD

week 3: 13, 11, 113, 0TD

week 4: 10, 6, 79, 0TD

week 5: 7, 7, 113, 1TD

week 6: 4, 3, 58, 0TD

week 7 :bye

week 8: 3, 3, 92, 2TDs

week 9: 6, 1, 10, 0TD

week 10: 7, 3, 26, 0TD

Chambers in the past 3 weeks (post-trade):

week 8: 5, 2, 35, 1TD

week 9: 10, 5, 59, 0TD

week 10: 3, 2, 17, 0TD

Between the two they were targeted a total by week:

week 8 had a total target and catch as 8/5, 3 of the targets Gates

week 9 had a total target and catch as 16/6, 6 of the targets were Gates

week 10 had a total target and catch as 10/5, 7 of those targets and Gates.

In addition, Gates target #s have been down since week 5 (7, 4, 3, 6, 7).

So Gates' #s have been down at least 2-3 weeks before Chambers showed up. His targets post-Chambers are the same as they were weeks 4-7.

Any other ideas on what has happened with his stats?

I really think that the inconsistency of Rivers has hurt his stock. The way to ensure consistency week in and week out from a WR/TE is to have a very good, solid QB. Even then, his targets my fluctuate, given that a better QB will run his progressions and find the open receiver. In Gates' case, I think the inconsistency of Rivers has played a major role in AG's late slump. Do I think that Gates will be mired in such stats the rest of the way? No. But realistically, I understand that Rivers is not a seasoned vet, and is still prone to some slumps and the learning curve. Translation? Gates can only be as effective as the person throwing him the ball. My own predictions? I think Gates will be a top 3 TE the rest of the way. My hopes? Number 1.
