Gates Top 5 Overall .. screwy scoring? (1 Viewer)

Hey guys...good to see some of the old-timers are still on the boards this year.

Here's the lowdown:

Scoring last year (RB/WR/TE):

50-75 yards = 2 points

75-100 = 4 points

100-125 = 6 points.

To place less emphasis on RB, and bring in the WR/TE more, there were 2 modifications made:

1) WRs & TE scoring was increased:

50-75 yards = 3 points

75-100 = 5 points

100-125 = 7 points.

2) TEs were also given a HUGE value...

TEs also get 1 point per reception. NOT RBs, NOT WRs...only TEs.

I need your thoughts to see if I am crazy. The VBD application, z-scores, consistency measures, etc. all bring Gates in as the #5 player on the board...right after the big 4 RBs. His value is so high that he is projected to score 54 more points than Chad Johnson!! For those keeping score, that is the equivalent of 9 TDs!

Lineup requirements allow you to use either a WR or a TE as your flex player. For all practical purposes, TE and WR are identical in value.

Lineup is:

QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR?TE, PK, Def

With values such as 106 for Gates (Shaun Alexander is at 105; Chad Johnson is at 52!))...do you bite the bullett and take Gates in Round 1? And for a 2 RBs owner for 15+ years...do you take the enormous value that Gates receives?

Oh...btw...for the skeptics,

Gates is projected at 80/960/9

Chad at 90/1215/11

The 80 points for Gates is HUGE? No?

I too play in a league with odd scoring. TE and WR get 3 pts per reception with TE getting 1 point per every 5 yards. RBs and WRs get 1 pt for every 10 yards. RBs get 1 pt per reception and .5 pt per carry. 6 pts for TD for all positions but QB (QB is 5 pts per TD, -5 per INT). You draft 2 QB, 3 RB, 5 WR, 2 TE, 2 D and 2 K and start all with the best 1 QB, 1 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 D and 1 K counting for the week.

One of staples of Fantasyball is to know your scoring system. In 2001 I took Gonzo with the #1 overall pick (over Faulk and James). There are still guys that go RB, RB, X that have been in this league for 6+ years while I consistently go with a combo of TE, WR, WR. Scoring is heavily weighted for Defenses too and the perceived really good ones start going in about the 4th round.

My point with all of this is know the rules of your league and draft accordingly. I'm not sure that all the guys in my league understand the scoring deviations from most leagues and I am able to exploit this lack of knowledge during the draft to my advantage.

If you see a pick that allows you to exploit the rules of the league then I say take it. Who cares who laughs at you and rides you for the rest of the draft based on your first pick. You'll be the one laughing in the end when you take home the $$$. Bye the way, I have won 3 of the last 6 years in this league.

I don't agree with those projections for Gates, but if you do, you really do need to consider him in the mid-first round in this scoring system. In any case, Gates, Gonzo and Shockey should be gone by the end of the second, if people understand VBD principles.

need to know where the next TEs are.

VBD equals:LJ (127), LT (110), Gates (107), Shaun (105), Heap(75), Gonzo (69), Shockey (65), Tiki (64), Rudi (56), Jackson (55), Chad (53), Smith (52), Holt (51).For a quick reference:Shaun = (1750, 19TDs)Heap (73, 832, 6 TDs)Tiki = (2050, 10Tds),As ytou can see...Gates ends up 11 VBD points than Tiki...a 200oyd, 10TD running back).So the question remains...do you take Gates in the middle of round 1 and hope for 2 quality RBs in 2/3rd...?Gardener

you take Gates as late as you think you can get him. His value is easily 1st round, but if your leaguemates are all stud-RB theorists, he may last until your second round pick, allowing you to get a WR or RB in the 1st.

How has Gates looked this offseason with Rivers?
He has been Rivers' security blanket. I believe he had 4-5 catches in the 1st half this past weekend. The KEY is the PPR...little dinks & dunks = 25-50 yards for everybody else. (RB/WR)

How has Gates looked this offseason with Rivers?
Gates has barely played at all in the preseason. (None of the starters at the skill positions on offense have, excpet Rivers. Tomlinson hasn't played. Eric Parker hasn't played. McCardell and Gates have played just a few snaps each.)But TE Manumaleuna and TE Krause have been catching a lot of balls in the preseason games, so that's an indiciation that the Chargers will keep throwing to the TE this year. Also, ignoring the preseason games, Gates has been an extremely popular target in the 11-on-11s in practice.

I'm in a similiar dynasty leage that awards 2 points for TE's. TE/WR is considered one position and you can start up to 4 with the flex positions. A top 10 TE outscores a RB in the 20-25 range. Gates went in the top 5 in the draft if I remember correctly..

You have to know your league-mates really. Will most of them adapt to your scoring changes? If not, I would roll the dice and wait on Gates. The later you pick the better in this situation, as either someone will take him before you or not.

If I'm picking top 3 I still take one of the consensus 3 and hope that Gonzo or someone comes back to me. Any pick later than 7 or 8 and I would take him in a hearbeat. Those middle picks are a coin toss. If you take him and everyone else still sleeps on TE's, you'll be left grasping for value at RB or other positions. If you don't, you may miss out on one of the other top TE's.

Personally, I don't like most of the mid-1st round RB's so I would probably take Gates in the first in any pick past the top 3 and depending on how the draft fell, might even take another TE with either your 2nd or 3rd pick if people sleep on them. In that scoring system, imagine Gates as your flex and Shockey as your TE!!!
