Gates? (1 Viewer)

Hopefully he can get back and find a proper shoe that will enable him to play Sunday against the colts. Any updates?

I remember while watching the game the announcers said the injury looked identical to what happened to Dwight Freeney earlier this year. I did a search on Freeney and noticed he had the dreaded Lis Franc injury. Are the Chargers still sticking to the "toe" story? As a Gates owner in dynasty I am holding my breath until I hear something more conclusive, I fear the worst and am fearing no Gates in 2008.

I hate to say this but the team moved the ball better when he was out . Seems rivers looked the field over more . and letting the Te in to block for the most part seemed to work much better . Jackson and Chambers had over a 100 yrds . Each both very nice games . Not that i dont want Gates to return . It just seems like rivers was reading threw 123 . He looked much better.

IMO that was just coincidence. As a Colts fan, I'd much rather face the Chargers without Gates. Those deep passes won't happen against the Colts Cover 2. Gates is the ideal weapon IMO against the Cover 2 Defense.

Very true, but if he's not at 100%, the team speed of the Colts will hamper any size advantage that Gates has. Those guys can make up ground quick...

Agreed. I was speaking of a healthy Gates versus a Cover 2 scheme.

Gates is the perfect weapon against a cover-2. He can out-run any LB in coverage, exploit the seam and catch balls underneath coverage and get tons of YAC.

I heard last night that he had a dislocated toe, and was not expected back in the playoffs. If they made it to the Big Game, he MIGHT have a chance of playing in it.

This was on ESPN Radio, reported by John Clayton.

I suspect that Gates will probably miss the game against the Colts, but he could return the following week against the Jaguars.

Gates’ playing status day-to-day

Monday, Jan 07, 2008

By Casey Pearce, Chargers.com

Chargers wide receivers Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson delivered gigantic performances in the Bolts’ win over Tennessee Sunday, and the pass-catching duo may have to carry a bigger load of the team’s offense when they travel to Indianapolis this week.

Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates underwent an MRI on his left toe Monday and his status for the Bolts’ divisional round playoff game is uncertain.

“It’ll be day-to-day and we’ll see how it is at the end of the week,” Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner said.

Gates has led the Chargers in receptions in each of the last four seasons. Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy expressed sympathy for the injury situation but said Monday he won’t be disappointed if the four-time Pro Bowler is unable to play.

“I think it would change a lot, and it wouldn’t hurt my feelings if they rested him up and tried to get him healthy for the following week,” Dungy said with a hint of sarcasm.

“He’s a tremendous player, he’s a big, big part of what they do. He’s a tough match-up, much like Dallas Clark is a tough match-up because they can move him a lot of places. He’s a little bit too big for most DBs to cover, and he’s a little bit too nifty for most linebackers to cover. They go to him in such big ways, it does dictate what you can do. I don’t know that they’ll tell us if he’s going to play or not, but it certainly would make a big difference.”

Should Gates be unavailable, the Chargers are confident that others will step up in his absence. Brandon Manumaleuna provided two catches against the Titans, including a key nine-yard reception on third down to keep a fourth-quarter scoring drive alive.

“Guys have got to step up and I think they will,” quarterback Philip Rivers said. “I think too, it’s such a luxury having both Gates and Brandon (Manumaleuna). You get so used to Gates, but Brandon’s a starting tight end in this league. He could be a starting tight end on a bunch of teams.”

While his contributions regularly go under the radar, Manumaleuna has been a huge part of the Chargers’ offensive success the last two seasons.

“Brandon is such a special player,” Turner said. “He’s so smart and he can play three or four different positions. Brandon really stepped up and played.”

In addition to Manumaleuna’s role expanding this week, the Chargers could call on some of their younger wide receivers more.

“Some of the wide outs obviously will be asked to do a little more, Buster (Davis) and Legedu (Naanee) and those guys,” Rivers said. “We’ll certainly miss him, but we’ll come up with a plan and the guys will step up and we’ll keep it going.”

i heard that on the radio this morning, and what he was saying made a lot of sense.
