George Edwards fired as DC in BUFFALO (1 Viewer)

About 8 weeks later than it should have happened. I like Wanny. Although I've heard he doesn't blitz a lot and the Bills don't have the players to get to the QB without blitzing.

And I definitely think they're going back to the 4-3. Although they don't really have the DE's for it or the LBs.

Rumor is the QB coach is also going to be out.

And from Gailey's comments, I have serious doubts about Stevie Johnson coming back. He seems REALLY ticked about his actions yesterday.

Good. Hope he follows through (though I've never been impressed with Gailey's spine in the past). If it was a one-off thing, whatever. When it's over and over and YOU'VE BEEN WARNED over again, make him pay some consequences.

Plus he came up small more than once in crunch time. I know he's a talent but it's time for Buffalo to find a new WR1.

What to make of Fitz? Second year in a row he looked solid first half of the season, woeful down the stretch. I really want to like the kid but he sure played awful after he signed his big $$ deal.

Wannstedt has always been a Jimmy Johnson family 4-3 coach. That scheme is a speed over size, attacking front seven, but prefers to rely on its ends to get up the field rather than use blitzing linebackers on passing downs. They've definitely got the defensive tackles to handle the transition, but improvement at RDE is a must (Kelsay should fit at LDE well enough). I think Barnett and Sheppard are decent fits for Wannstedt, but whether they're WLB/MLB or MLB/SLB is hard to say. It'll be interesting to see how the transition goes for them. Whether it was poor play, injuries or a combination of both, they haven't had a consistent identity on defense for some time now.

The talk right now is that Merriman will be back next season in Buffalo. No idea if that's good or bad, but I certainly won't hold my breath expecting him to make it through the whole season. I'm not sure what role he'd play in a 4-3. Maybe rotated in at DE?

I don't necessarily object to the move, although I don't really pin the defense's shortcomings on Edwards. He never had the players to properly run the 3-4 scheme and whatever talent we did have was usually injured.

Going back to the 4-3 might be better in the long-term based on our DTs, but that means another couple years of rebuilding the DEs and LBs through the draft and free agency. Nice.

Letting Stevie walk out the door is the equivalent of cutting off your nose to spite your face. There's no one even close to replacing him and despite the antics, he's never been a cancer or divisive force in the locker room. Every guy on that team wants him back.

So we're cool with selfish behavior >>>>>>>>>> team. When's the last time you guys made the playoffs?

He's too small for DE. That's the problem with making the transition back. Kelsay is the only LB capable of properly making the switch (and that's being generous).

Wanting him back on the team <> being cool with the antics. The antics can be effectively addressed despite bringing him back into the fold. This isn't a Santonio Holmes situation... Stevie was contrite about it and never argued with the coach or his teammates.
