Get rid of Leftwich? (1 Viewer)

Is this a serious consideration? I think that when Lefty plays he is a very good above average QB. He is young and has a great arm. Why would the Jags part ways with him? For David Garrard?????????? Makes NO sense to me that we are even hearing these reports. Oakland would snap him up in a second!

It is looking like the Jags are going to shop Leftwich in the off season. And I agree with you, I don't understand why unless there's some sort of chronic or degenerative condition with his ankle. Leftwich has been injured a lot and that is certainly a legit concern. But when healthy he's played well especially considering the talent level of the Jaguars on offensive and the conservative approach of Del Rio. Time will tell and perhaps with time the the rumored falling out between Del Rio and Leftwich will get worked out. But currently all signs are pointing toward Leftwich never suiting up for the Jags again.

Some will say that Garrard has cause this situation with his good play but I just don't see David as the answer at QB reguardless of what happens with Leftwich. David is a good game manager and makes few mistakes, but he also makes few plays in the passing game. His stats look decent but so much of his production comes from passes to the RBs and TEs. In the Bills game for example the first pass he threw more than 10 yards past the line of scimage came with 2 minutes left in the game(and it was only a 12 yard out). How can a QB not attempt a 10 yard pass for 58 minutes in a game in which his team never had the lead? There were 4 minutes left in the 2nd quarter when he threw his first pass beyond the line of scimage. Yes, David had a flashy 118.0 QB rating and high completion percentage. But a lot of QBs could do that passing to RBs and TEs just beyond the line of scimage and tossing TD passes of under 3 yards. David is an excellent back up, he can come in and not lose the game for you. But I'd like a lot more down the field ability in a starting QB.

i would LOVE to see Leftwich in Detroit next year. Go Jags! Go David Garrard! Run Byron right out of town

As I recall, he has something like a $5.2M salary next year, and he's missed significant time the last 2 years. I think that unless he redoes his contract, he's gone.

If I were a GM I'd rather Leftwich than most of the high draft pick QBs. Why wait til they develop when you've got this talented young option available in Leftwich? IF he commands alot of value then this is a no brainer by the Jags. If he doesn't, which is very possible, then I don't see the point. Maybe they feel neither Garrard nor Leftwich is getting enough experience which each playing some of the season?

I think the prob is the O. They have enough talent to go with some type of dynamic offense like Martz or Moore(Indy) do. There's is still pretty vanilla with a heavy dose of the RBs while they've got tons of talent at WR.

In McCown(sp?) you guys might have your future QB. So odd how there was a debate if it would be him or Kitna this summer, then 60-70 days later he's forgotten about and Lion fans want another young QB.

I've thought Garrard has been the better QB for years. Scheme dictates that he doesn't pass deep that much. Called ball control.

Leftowich has never really impressed me except as a leader. The long delivery always made me think he was a liability.

Having said that, as a Bears fan I hope Lefty goes to Detroit as well. :)

I can definitely see Leftwich getting traded for 2nd round pick to some team. The Jags could just as easy use a pick to pick up their QB of the future in the second round Troy Smith or another top QB let Garrad run the squad for the first year or two and about that time the replacement should be ready

The jags are idiots.Garrard blows and the passing game is non existant with him at QB. At least Bustwich could throw to the receiver. No reason to have WR's in Jax now. Just line up 3 RB's behind Garrard and let him hand it off or dumpit off. They will suck bad once Garrard is in at QB.

Also, one potential hang up to any Leftwich trade would be Leftwich's contract. Iirc, he is to be a UFA after 2007. Any potential suitor will want an extension signed prior to a trade. And, I would think an extension would make the pricetag higher for the Jags to ask.

But, if Leftwich knows this, he might ask for a ton knowing he will be a UFA in a year and get a very good contract at that time. This will be dependent on Byron, imo.

Doesn't matter how talented the guy is if he's got a problem with staying on the field. The Dolphins had a great linebacker a long time ago ( John Offerdahl?) during the Marino days who was the lynchpin of their defense. He was a playmaker and a leader. But he was always hurt. Didn't matter how much he meant to the Fish if he could never get on the field. I also think you have to consider the Fred Taylor factor in Jax. They stuck with Taylor a long time and he was always hurt. Arguably it cost them over the long run not to fully replace him with someone who wasn't so fragile.
Byron's frequent injuries is an issue will be until he stays healthy for at least one full season. I'm sure it's part of the reason for the bad blood with Jack Del Rio and the Jags. I've also heard rumors that his ankle could have a chronic or degenerative condition that might never fully heal. Again, just rumors. The health concerns are legit, but I've been impressed with his play and production while healthy. But can he stay healthy?Fred has missed 6 starts in the last 5 seasons and averged a little over 4.6 yards a carry in that time. I don't think it's hurt the Jags all that much.

It's going to be interesting to see how this shakes out if the Jags do try and trade Leftwich. Byron could really throw a wrench in the works buy demanding a big contract or refusing to work any new contract at all. He'd be almost impossible to trade without a new deal. At the least it would seriously lower what return the Jags could get for him. If the bad blood between Leftwich and Del Rio/the front office is as ugly as some reports suggest, personal agendas could come into play and hurt all parties involved.

Why let the truth get in the way of a good story?

How much leverage does Leftwich really have? This isn't the early 90s where the Chiefs were salivating to get the 49ers third stringer QB in Steve Bono. Part of the reason guys like Testaverde and DeBerg hung around so long was the severe shortage of good QBs. Times have changed. QBs still bust but I think teams are taking more care and preparation to better develop the QB position. And Leftwich will have to compete with the other QBs that will be avaliable via Free Agency and trade. Where would he go? Oakland? Houston? Maybe Minnesota? KC? Detroit?
Leftwich is a better option than atleast half the starting QBs in the league right now. He'd have his fair share of suitors.

I think Leftwich is FAR more respected in NFL circles than in Fantasy ones. NFL GMs and coaches see Leftwich's size, production, record, talent, potential, etc as extremely high. He will go for a pretty penny, if willing to extend.

Leftwich has been a warrior and a team guy, current infighting with JDR aside.

Let's look a little at what the NFL-types are for Leftwich:

a. He is young, will be 27 in January

b. He has good size for a NFL QB at 6'5", 240 lbs

c. Heart - many will remember his Marshall teammates carrying his to the line of scrimmage when he was playing through an injury (ankle, iirc)

d. Pedigree of a 1st round draft pick.

e. Last of all, many regard Leftwich as a very strong leader while giving him credit (whether due or not) for the Jags turning the corner from 2003 to 2004

Yes, I realize that Leftwich has missed 8 games in the three years prior to this one, and is now out for the season. But, I would think that a team would take a chance on Leftwich (very easily) versus drafting a first round QB and waiting on him to develop.

One thing I forgot to include is that we, as fantasy players, might over-emphasize the injury factor. I think back to this past offseason where Culpepper AND Brees were fairly hot commodities despite coming off of severe, career-threatening injuries. The Dolphins and the Saints took the chance and someone will take a chance (at a high price) for Leftwich.

Injuries concerns aside, Leftwich has played in 16 games over the last 2 seasons(what would be 1 full season). He's put up 22 TDs, with 10 INTs, almost 3,400 yards, completed almost 60% of his passes, he's rushed for 4 TDs, and has a QB rating around 85 over that period. When you factor in Del Rio conservative approach to offense and the lack of talent at the WR position those stats aren't bad at all.

For a guy that was a gunslinger at Marshall, Leftwich has been very good about not throwing picks in the NFL. Put on a team that allows him to throw downfield more than a few times games he could represent a nice blend of a QB that can make big plays with his arm and not be a big turnover risk. With the free agent/trading block QB crop looking something like Bledsoe, Schaub, Plummer, Leftwich and a bunch of guys with little if any chance of starting, there could be some interest in Byron. Heck, I never thought Branch would go for a first round pick, anything can happen.

Jets - about the same as Penny. Why make a lateral move? They drafted the heir in the 2nd round last year.BuffaloOakland - no OL and you want an injury prone and non-mobile QB? They already have a non-mobile guy.KC - Huard filled in just fine for Green. No reason to send a draft pick for no gain.Chicago - they already have an injury prone starter and a suitable sub on the bench.Houston - Lefty can't stay healthy behind a decent Jax OL and you want him in sack city?Miami - they have too much invested in a few 1st round QBs already.GBTampa - trying to re-sign Simms right now. Maybe if talks fall through.Washington - spent 2 first rounders for Campbell. This is not fantasy football buddy.DetroitClevelandMinnesotaBaltimore - he's not better than McNair.
Widdled down the list to older QBs and iffy young guys.

To be fair, fruity pebbles didn't say any of those teams would be interested in Leftwich or that Leftwich would be a good fit for those teams, he said Leftwich was a better option than the current starter for those teams. There is a slight difference. I persoanlly think Detriot or Cleveland present the best options. He is from Washington DC and if the skins had not invested so much in Campbell that would seem like a natural fit. But I can't see them bailing on Campbell yet.

I agree with many of your replies, but I think a couple need clarification. Let's look at KC. They have the 36 year old Trent Green and the backup, who was very capable this year, the 33 year old, UFA this offseason, Damon Huard. There is no guarantee that Huard will be back in KC next year. If he is back, he will probably be the backup. I would think Leftwich would be a very good it for the conservative offense Herm runs.In Oakland, much will depend on whether Al wants to keep Brooks. I would think that Al sees Leftwich as the gunslinger "he has always wanted".In TB, yes they are trying to re-sign Simms. But, I would think most everyone would think that Leftwich would gve the Bucs a better chance to win vs Grads or Simms. In Balt, McNair is playing great, but is 33 years old at the present time and will be 34 in February.I agree on the rest of your comments. But, I could see a team like Detroit or Cleveland very interested in Lefwich. If Bulger's injuries continue and he is injured (other than ribs), I could see the Rams as a potential suitor. If McNabb's injury is worse than they thought, I could see Leftwich in Philly. Basically, at this time, much is unknown and it is too early to tell much in most of these circumstances.

Beat me to it .... :( We do agree.

What happens if Simms is not re-signed? Last I saw, the Bucs made an initial offer but Simms was not impressed.

you need a couple more teams.Green's averaged 4k yards til this injury year, Leftwich isn't as good.Favre is better than LeftwichMcNair is winning and managing that O perfectly. Leftwich doesn't have that much presence as a leader.I think Kitna is fineI think Brad Johnson is doing just fabulous considerring who he has to throw to...'nother thread, nother time. I said a better option. Given that he's 27, I think he's a better option than Green, Favre, Kitna, and BJ, who are all nearing the end of their careers.
