We all know how close we were to beating the Pats in Giants stadium where our record was 3 - 5. We also know that Ahmad Bradshaw was not available for that game because he was hurt. We also know that the Pats should have lost to the Ravens, if it was not for a BS timeout called by the coach...I mean they had them....dead. And lastly, we also know that Miami beat the Ravens, as we know - Miami being the worst team in the league.
The GMEN WILL SHOCK THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
not that it isn't possible, but i'm curious: was this post inspired by whiskey, or just plain old beer?either way, the analysis is quite solid.
Actually, it was Vodka and looking at NFL network - the Giants Superbowl where Hoss beat the Bills. If that can happen - why cant WE beat New England
I may be alone in this, but I believe that the talent gap between the '91 Bills and the '91 Giants was significantly larger than the talent gap between the '07 Patriots and the '07 Giants. The '91 Giants were supposed to get rolled by the '91 49ers. Famously the NFL home office was so sure of the outcome, they mailed the Super Bowl tickets to SF. Eddie DeBartolo had to mail 'em to NY after the game. Somehow the Giants survived, and then beat a far superior Bills team.
As for the Belichick angle, his defense was on the field for 19 minutes in the Super Bowl. God knows, that defense was terrific, and so was Belichick, but Ron Erhardt and his offense did a good job, too.
Go Giants!
You may not be alone in this, but whoever would agree with you in this would be equally wrong. Youre telling me that you think the '90 Bills were that much better than the '90 NYG? The only reason those Giants were supposed to get 'rolled' by SF was because that was also a dominant team, looking to win a 3rd straight title. No shame in being a decided underdog to that Niners team. But the 2 teams played earlier in the season, and it was a Giants-style 7-3 slugfest. To beat SF the 2nd time around, they just needed to slug it out again. Which they did. With the league's best D. During that time, the NFC was on a dominant Superbowl run. 13 straight SB wins for the FAR superior conference of the time. Leading up to that '90 matchup, the NFC had won 6 straight. The NFC
OWNED the AFC back then. So, I dont care what anyone was saying then or now about those '90 Bills, they were an AFC team. Anyone who knew football recognized the difference in the talent level between the two conferences back then. Not only were the Giants the NFC's best, they won the EAST. That division was the league's strongest. Washington and Philly went 10-6 that year. Winning that division back then meant something. Today, not so much. Now, its a good NFC division. Nowhere near the best in the league.
New York also had the best defense in the league in '90. They led the league with only 211 points allowed. This year's Giants have given up over 350. No comparison whatsoever between the defenses of then and now. The '90 Giants played the Niners that year in the regular season, and held them to 7 points and lost. This year's Giants played New England in the regular season, and held them to
38 and lost. See the difference?
The '90 Giants also started out the season 10-0. They lost Simms during the season, which hurt. But that team wasnt great because of Simms. They didnt score a ton of points to begin with. But that was the biggest question mark with New York that year. The fact was, the backup, Hostetler, had been with that team in that system for several years and was ready to step up. But to start out 10-0 back then? in the NFC?? Yeah, that was a pretty good team.
That Giants team had the league's best D, playing in the NFL's best division and conference, with the experience of winning a Superbowl just 4 years earlier. Comparing
that team to this year's team? Only thing they have in common is the name.
I dont really care about what the 'talent' level was with either team entering that Superbowl. The Giants were the better team and played against better teams to get there.
Btw, we really dont want to get into comparing the '90 Buffalo Bills to the New England Patriots of today. An all-time great team vs one that couldnt win a Superbowl? No breakdown needed there.
Bottom line - that was a far better Giants team back then in comparison to today's Gmen, and they played against a Bills team that in no way compares to a modern day dynasty. If the Giants win on Sunday, i
t will actually be an upset.
