Giants' Chad Jones in Horrific Car Crash

Chad Jones, a rookie safety for the New York Giants, is reportedly in "guarded" condition after a Friday morning car accident in New Orleans.

According to WWL-TV in Louisiana, Jones suffered a fractured left leg with arteries and nerves exposed. He was listed in critical condition and taken into surgery. WWL.com reported, via Jones' father, Alfred, that Chad was alert when paramedics transported him to the hospital.

Images of Jones' car in the aftermath of the accident surfaced on tigerdroppings.com, showing the completely totaled vehicle.

Authorities told WDSU .com that Jones was driving his 2010 Range Rover toward Canal Street, when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a streetcar poll. Emergency responders were forced to cut Jones out of the vehicle, but two other passengers escaped serious injury.

"Our paramedics responded to a motor vehicle crash at Carrollton & Toulouse this morning around 6:15," New Orleans Emergency Service spokesman Jeb Tate told reporters, according to The Advocate. "Our paramedic rescue division, along with NOFD, extricated a 20-year-old male from a vehicle with a significant amount of damage. Once the patient was freed from the vehicle, our paramedics transported him to the LSU Trauma Center in guarded condition.

"We use guarded to denote a condition between critical and stable."

Jones was a third-round pick by the Giants NFL Draft out of LSU. WDSU.com called Jones "perhaps one of the best athletes in the history of LSU." Jones won a national title with the Tigers' football team in 2008, then repeated the feat as a pitcher on LSU's baseball team in 2009.

LSU football coach Les Miles responded to Friday morning's incident on Twitter: "Just got news about Chad Jones' car accident. We are praying for Chad and his family. Keep him in your prayers."

The Giants were hoping that the athletic Jones could add some depth in the secondary, behind offseason acquisitions Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant. Jones recently signed his rookie contract, a four-year deal worth a reported $2.6 million.

Just saw the photos...looks pretty bad. Putting football aside, I hope he comes out relatively OK.

I saw on the ESPN ticker last night they were even considering amputating his foot. What happened with this?
Amputation was reportedly not necessary, which is awesome news. He may yet face issues in the immediate, short or long term, however. Depending on whether the vessels themselves were repaired or grafts were used to bypass the severely damaged areas, there remains a risk that the lower leg/ankle/foot may not be adequately supplied with blood and further surgery could be necessary. Hopefully, he'll have as close to a full recovery as is possible.
