Giants tell Droughns he'll split time with Jacobs (1 Viewer)

I would argue Jacobs is a top talent.
I would argue that a top talent would beat out Arkee Whitlock while at Southern Illinois, or at least earn more carries than him in the same backfield.
You could argue that but your logic would be extremely flawed. The time share situation at Southern Illinois which he walked into with Whitlock and Terry Jackson, who had just transfered from Minnesota, was more a reflection of Jerry Kill's coaching philosophy than a reflection of Jacobs talent or potential. Kill's comments regarding Jacobs when he was drafted by the Giants support that:“I guarantee you this, and I don’t go out on a limb too often, that’s the best gamble a guy can make, what the Giants did with him. I sure in hell wouldn’t want to be the guy who didn’t take him. His best years are ahead of him. He’s going to get stronger. New York’s getting a hard-working, tough, good person, and actually a freak of nature. There are not too many guys who are 6-4, 265 pounds and run like he does. You just don’t see ‘em. Certainly not at tailback.”Would your argument work in other situations with other players? Is Ronnie Brown not a top talent because he didn't beat out Cadillac at Auburn? Or because he got out rushed by Jacobs in 2003?Is Willie Parker not a top talent because he couldn't beat anyone out at UNC?The fact that Jacobs made the best of some less than ideal situation and circumstances beyond his control in college is a testament to his immense talent.Auburn 2003 ............................GP... Jacobs' rush job

Big man has big plans to carry Giants

BY RALPH VACCHIANO

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Brandon Jacobs thinks he's earned the starting RB spot with the Giants.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reuben Droughns, the newest Giant, is looking forward to a running back competition this summer that he said "the best man is going to win."

According to Brandon Jacobs, the best man already has.

"I think I've earned the opportunity to be the main guy," Jacobs told the Daily News yesterday. "I can be just as good as anybody else in the league. I can be just as good as your top Pro Bowl guy. That's not even a concern to me. I think I'm most definitely going to get my opportunity to carry 20-25 times per game. I can't wait."

The confident Jacobs likely will get at least that next season, since he's the heir apparent to Tiki Barber, even though the Giants traded receiver Tim Carter to Cleveland for Droughns on Friday. The trade became official when both players passed physicals yesterday, a few hours before Droughns and Jacobs met at Giants Stadium and set up plans to go to lunch. That will be the first of many things they share, since the plan is to let the 5-11, 220-pound Droughns get 10-15 carries per game - possibly including some short-yardage - to keep the 6-4, 265-pound Jacobs healthy and to give him an occasional break. Jacobs welcomed the deal for Droughns, whom he called "a small, powerful-type guy," and said, "It's going to be a pleasure to play with him."

Yet Jacobs made it clear he expects to be "the man" in the Giants' backfield. He's ready to shed the short-yardage role which led to only 96 carries (and 423 yards) last season. And he's been working hard in the offseason with Barber's old trainer, Joe Carini, to make sure he's ready for the increased load.

I like that he is working with Tiki's old trainer because he clearly made Tiki much better.

I'd say Tiki made Tiki much better, but point understood.
Tiki REALLY improved his ability to break tackles and absorb blows better after he began the RIGOROUS work out program. I capitalized it because it was far more strenuous than any RB was using (according the trainer) and appears top be the reason Tiki got better after reaching 30 years of age.If Jacobs is willing to work out like that, I am confident he will be a very solid RB (as long as he stays healthy) because he appears to have good vision, speed, and great power.

Droughns' contract details

Posted by Mike Garafolo March 14, 2007 3:44PM

I told you late last week the Giants had reworked RB Reuben Droughns' contract to facilitate the trade with the Browns. Well, here are the details of the deal that was officially signed on Monday, according to someone familiar with the contract:

• This year, Droughns' base salary was chopped from $1.25 million to $750,000. Next year, he will earn $1 million in base salary instead of $1.75 million. And his 2009 salary was slashed from $2.75 million to $1.25 million.

• The $1.75-million roster bonus he was due next week was eliminated, replaced with a $1.5-million signing bonus that will be spread over the next three years' salary caps.

• Droughns will earn a roster bonus next March equal to $15,625 times the number of games in which he's active. So if he dresses for 10 games, he'll be paid $156,250.

• In the last two years of the deal, he will earn roster bonuses equal to $31,250 times the number of games in which he's active.

• There are also bonuses worth up to $850,000 for rushing-yard and Pro Bowl incentives.

The deal averages $1.9 million over three years, so it's roughly the equivalent of half of what Droughns was scheduled to earn with the Browns. His cap number for this season is $1.25 million (base salary plus one-third of his signing bonus) -- $350,000 more than Tim Carter's base salary of $900,000

Brandon Jacobs is scheduled to earn less than $1 million in salary over the next two seasons combined, though he will probably get a new contract either late this year or next off-season if he has a big year.
LINKSome are speculating that this contract is really that of a backup running back. Certainly at this point nothing is etched in stone.

Certainly looks that way. I think Mike Anderson is making a little over $2mill, and Betts is around the same so Droughns salary is consistent with good backup money. In reality that's what he is, one of the worst starting RB's or a good backup.

So what's the latest thoughts now after the draft? Is Ahmad Bradshaw going to play any kind of role here or is he just camp fodder?

I'm VERY intrigued by Jacobs this year. If he ends up getting 70% of the carries, he could be a 1st round RB that can be had in rd 4 or 5 in a ten team league. Dude was such a beast every time I saw him last year. I know he has issues with vision and patience reading blocks. But man, time and again I saw DBs afraid to tackle this behemoth. Those of you who saw more of him than I did, why are you so down on his ability to carry the load?

I just don't see Droughens as anything more than a quality back up.

FBG disagrees. They have Droughns at 240+ touches to only 180 for Jacobs. They are correct because Droughns will get the bulk of the work.

I find it very hard to believe that Brandon Jacobs is the man.....i may be wrong

but i don't believe he has ever had more than 11 carries in a game....unless he

breaks out for a c-note in the 1st game or 2 R.Droughns will be your Jints RB...

On a side note....i think this is a throw away year for the Giants (Re-Build)

i can see them going 5-11...6-10....giving Tom C enough rope to hang himself.

I know the Giants may be 2nd or 3rd in line (Browns, Skins) for the Bill Cowher

Sweepstakes, but hey.....Think about it.... :bye:

Sorry.....I've already started my Cinco De Mayo Weekend......

.....i may be wrong but i don't believe he has ever had more than 11 carries in a game....
To date as a pro he has not had more than 11 carries in a game. But he had one of the most impressive seasons ever for a high school senior, rushing for 3,022 yards and 38 touchdowns, averaging 8.6 yards per carry, and returning 8 kicks for touchdowns--and that was all in ONE year.

Good luck keeping this guy a secret. Somebody in every league will reach for him, well in advance of any actual RB1 NFL production. I was hoping to get him in Rd 4 or later, but I think somebody's gonna reach WAY earlier once the hype machine really starts rolling early in training camp and preseason. This will be especially true in 12 man leagues where stud RBs are even more scarce.

Tougher to hide a 6'4" 260 lb guy playing RB in the glare of the NY media than it was with CT going to MN.IMHO, we'll know more about Jacobs during camp & pre-season. I'm sure there will be enough coverage on him to tell people if he's worthy of consideration as an RB2 before most drafts.

I went with Jacobs getting 60%

I seems like there will be a somewhat open competition for the job.

Jacobs will probably open training camp as #1 on the depth chart and I think he has enough talent to keep Droughns as the #2. However because he has never carried the load before (with the Giants or at Auburn or Southern Illinois) Droughns will get plenty of work.

I can see the Giants doing what KC did a couple of years ago with Priest getting two series and LJ getting one series

I think a lot of this may sort itself as the season approaches. As with many players, he will probably go earlier in drafts the closer we get to opening day if he looks like he will be the primary ball carrier. I'm not sure at this point how early I would be to draft Jacobs but I think he could be a decent RB2 fantasy option given that he should see a lot of TD opportunities. So IMO worse case scenario is that of Cory Dillon the past couple years in NE.

Bradshaw has a similar style to Tiki (surprisingly strong runner with great short area quickness who lacks top-end long speed) and will be asked to do a lot of the same things in the Giants offense: stretch play, screens, draws etc. He has the talent to beat out Ward for the 3rd RB spot if his head is screwed on straight and he maintains his health through camp.vs. Tulane:

BTW anybody who thinks Jacobs is strictly a "one dimensional", "straight ahead", "short yardage" back with "no wiggle" who "lacks the speed to get outside" needs to watch this:

I think Jacobs could be a Top 20 RB this season. The strength of his TD potential alone gives him value. He scored 16 touchdowns the past two seasons while barely getting on the field behind Barber. He'll clearly play more this season so it's not a stretch to project him with 10+ TDs. I do not believe Droughns is talented enough to provide a real threat and I don't think Bradshaw is ready yet to make a major contribution. I think the Giants go into camp with the intention of giving Jacobs the lion's share of the carries and unless he flops he'll get them once the season begins.
