Giants Throw DC Tim Lewis Under The Bus (1 Viewer)

Still reeling from the decision to extend Tom Coughlin's contract one more year, the New York "Football" Giants have fired D-Coord, Tim Lewis. Apparently, the Mara family has decided that Lewis will be their scapegoat for their underwhelming 2006 season.

Lewis' starting defense lost over 30 player games to injury, but, I guess that wasn't a good enough excuse for him to keep his job. Strange because Kevin Gilbride, current QB coach, is being promoted to O-Coord. That's right, Gilbride's outstanding job coaching Eli "Don't Call Me"-Manning earned him a promotion.

Just a thought, when, and if, Matt Millen ever gets fired, he sounds like a perfect fit for New York, a team that rewards mediocrity.

Giants fire Lewis

Capers a possible replacement

Tim Lewis takes fall for Giants' defense.

Tom Coughlin may have survived for one more season, but Tim Lewis did not.

As expected, Lewis was fired yesterday after three seasons as the Giants' defensive coordinator in the first of what could be several changes to Coughlin's staff. He took the fall for a defense that finished 25th overall in the NFL this season, after his players boasted over the summer that they had the talent to finish in the top five.

There was no word yesterday on any of Coughlin's other assistants, though a new defensive coordinator is likely to want to bring in his own position coaches. On the other side of the ball, quarterbacks coach Kevin Gilbride is expected to be promoted to offensive coordinator(my emphasis). If he is, a new quarterbacks coach will be hired.

One player also said he expected the Giants to overhaul their entire strength and conditioning program - one that is not popular among at least some of the players. That could mean trouble for Jerry Palmieri, Coughlin's strength and conditioning coach.

So which is it? Is Coughlin committed to Eli's improvement or does he want Gilbride running the offense?

I predicted in another thread that Coughlin would fire a coach if they lost to Philly.

Thought it would be Gilbride, but Lewis works too.

Coughlin = loser who only takes credit for the wins.

Why does this make him a "scapegoat"? The Giants defense sucked pretty badly.
The defense was hardly at full strength this year. As noted in original posting and the article linked, the defense had key players out missing extended periods. (Strahan, Arrington, Umenyiora, Madison & Webster.) Sure they ended up 25th in total defense, but if Coughlin gets to keep his job, and if Gilbride (way to go with Eli!) gets promoted (maybe), then I look at Lewis as a scapegoat. They had to get rid of someone. The article cites Lewis' unpopularity with players....like Coughlin is the Man of the Year in that clubhouse? They had to get rid of someone...and Lewis drew the short straw?

The most frustrating thing about watching the Giants this year was watching teams throw the ball over the middle and run the ball up the middle every single game, and the defense not adapting to stop this. Losing Strahan, Arrington, Tuck, Webster(for times although I don't think he's that good)and Osi to injury is what helped do him in. But never blitzing the QB didn't help either. I agree that with a D-Line as talented as the Giants, they do not need to blitz as often...but when the D-line is down to a DT starting at end and a rookie DE starting at the other, you may need to change your plan a bit.

I don't want Coughlin to stay, but I don't believe Lewis did anything in his time here to allow him to stay either. Coughlin will get his next year.

What's the feeling on possibly getting Capers as DC? Then possibly (hopefully) reuniting him with Cowher next year...

Being a Jints fan that would be SWEET!!!!
