Gibril Wilson benched? (1 Viewer)

(Rotoworld) Dolphins FS Gibril Wilson was benched in favor of rookie Chris Clemons Sunday.

Analysis: Coach Tony Sparano said the decision to go with three rookies in the secondary caused him a "sleepless week." While Sparano cited Clemons' stellar special teams work for the promotion, Wilson had been a major liability in coverage. The free agent bust is unlikely to return to Miami next season.
Was this towards the end of the game? Is it even a three-down replacement? I'm kind of interested in seeing how this might play out. Gibril was good for quite a few tackles per game even though he was thoroughly regarded as horrible in coverage. If Clemons can jump in there and do a better job, he's got to have some IDP value, no?

What I don't get is that Norton has him getting 6-2 this week.

Shouldn't we expect Clemons to either start or get a good piece of the work this week?

The Miami safety situation has gotten screwier with every passing week.

**Rumors have abounded for over a month that Gibril Wilson was on the outs by beat writers, but nothing happened on the field and there was no official comment about Wilson's coverage deficiencies being a problem (and they're nothing new).

** Yeremiah Bell began leaving the field in nickel packages during the preseason, then was an every-down guy early in the year. He lost playing time (not Wilson) again about a month ago, only to play every down against the spread offense in NO, then sat again at times last week.

**Wilson was benched for Chris Clemons (a promising rookie safety last week), presumably in the base defense, with Wilson coming on the field in the nickel -- at least according to beat writer tweets on Sunday. The game logs suggest a 70-30 Wilson-Clemons rotation -- without much regard to base/nickel, however.

And we thought it'd be tough to project with Wilson and Bell as every-down players....

There was a note that Clemons was dinged late last week and Wilson's split suggests that he's still a viable option. I wouldn't be confident with him in my lineup until I see an injury report suggesting that Clemons is unlikely to take enough reps to keep Wilson off the field for 30% or more of the snaps this week.

We credit (or is it blame?) Mike Shanahan with the start of the RBBC system in the NFL. Could we end up looking back on Tony Sparano as the originator of the SBC?

This situation makes some of the team's LB usage seem crystal clear in comparison. I'm just glad I sold high on Wilson during the off-season and also sold high on Bell after the first few weeks of the season.
