Very smart man... No one in their right mind (or wrong mind) would want to manage that team...

BALTIMORE -- Joe Girardi has declined an offer from the Baltimore Orioles to become their next manager, his agent, Steve Mandel, told ESPN on Thursday.

Girardi interviewed with the Orioles on Tuesday, and ESPN's Peter Gammons reported that the team offered him its vacant managerial job. And ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reported that as of Wednesday night, the two sides had agreed to work on an agreement that would make Girardi the team's next skipper.

The discussions with Girardi came after Baltimore fired Sam Perlozzo on Monday after two-plus seasons as manager.

Girardi was a first-time manager last season, leading the Florida Marlins to a 78-84 record and keeping his youthful club in contention until late September.

The former big league catcher was fired at the end of the season following a rift with owner Jeffrey Loria and then was voted NL Manager of the Year -- the first to win the award with a losing record.

A former coach for Yankees manager Joe Torre, Girardi returned to New York this season as a broadcaster for the YES Network.

Meanwhile, as first reported on Monday by ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney, Andy MacPhail was hired Wednesday as chief operating officer of the Orioles. MacPhail has run both the Cubs and the Twins.

MacPhail and Girardi overlapped in Chicago during MacPhail's tenure as Cubs president, which began in 1994 and ended in 2006. Girardi was with the Cubs for two stints totaling six seasons, the last from 2000-02.

I hope he is not going to take the Yankees job, it would not be wise. Aging roster, barren farm system. I think Girardi can pick any job he wants that has an opening after what he did with the Marlins.

"...the timing is not right for my family and I."

What, the timing WAS right 2 days ago when you agreed to interview? You didn't know 2 days ago the timing wasn't right?

Lame, very lame. ;)
He's trying to be nice.
;) He could have saved being nice if he would have just used his noggin a couple days ago.
It is likely that he did use his noggin a couple of days ao and knew it was "right" to take the interview regardless. The guy wants to manage again. He had an opportunity. How do you not even go talk to the team? There is a very limited supply of these jobs out there. He has a relationship with the GM. You take the interview and check things out for yourself. And you don't burn bridges.

Bitter are we just a bit?In almost no situation do you turn down an interview. You always have to see what's being put out on the table. I don't see what the big problem is here (i.e., calling it "lame").

Bitter? LOL. Did I SAY I was an Oriole fan? It is lame. I didn't say he shouldn't interview. I'm saying he shouldn't have gotten their hopes up when he probably had no intention to take the job. And he DID get their hopes up. He interviewed. It went well. He said and I quote, "It was productive." Look at the story: "By Wednesday night, the Orioles AND Girardi had agreed to work on an agreement..."Surely if he had any misgiving about Angelos or anything else, they would have cropped up in the interview and he could have cut things off right there. The story AGAIN: "...there were indications over the last 48 hours that Girardi was poised to take the job."Then he didn't even have the guts to call 'em and tell 'em no. He had a "representative" do it.Lame. The "family's not ready" excuse. It's bulletproof. You can't be criticized for it.

Joe should have his pick of the litter come offseason.

Why take a lame duck job now, when you can choose between 3 to 6 teams come the offseason? He's not broke. He has a job at the YES network. He can take his time.

The only silver lining about the O's job is that MacPhail would be his boss. As a Minny homer, Andy's name was gold in the organization. He didn't get it done with the Cubs, but the Cubs are cursed. Ask Prior or Woods.

 Ever cross your mind that maybe he really was thinking about taking the position and using that time to make up his mind? Lay off the guy, he's not in the wrong here.

I don't know why the press didn't mention Lee Mazzilli more when Girardi was offered the job. They were both with the Yankees at the same time, and Mazzilli sure got thrown under the bus in Baltimore.

Is it the consensus that Girardi will get the job over Mattingly when the time comes?
Unlikely, as long as Steinbrenner is running the show...Steinbrenner loves Mattingly and wants him to be the next manager...
